have you used google for this kind of problem and checked the knowledge-base articles? I get plenty of hits that might solve the problems by using using google. Search for: windows live install problems

This is more of an iPod problem, but I guess it's somewhat related so I'll post it here.

My iPod is being gay, and when I try to play a song Melvins' Stoner Witch it decides to skip straight ahead to "Magic Pig Detective" for some reason. If I try to play a song before "MPD", it skips to "MPD". If I select a song after it, it skips to the end of the album and goes back to the menu (what it does after an album finishes playing). It works fine on iTunes when I'm playing it on my computer, but it's getting annoying that I can't play it on my iPod. I've checked the properties of the tracks and there doesn't seem to be anything abnormal.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The same thing used to happen to me, but luckily I figured it out.

How it happened for me was that I was playing music on iTunes at the same time as importing my CDs into iTunes and then onto my iPod. Somehow, that caused the problem.

Just delete the tracks from your iPod, then import them from your CDs and onto your iPod again without playing anything in iTunes while you do it. The same applies if you've bought anything from the iTunes store.

That should solve your problem. I know it sucks, but at least now you know.

Where can you find those specially designed screwdrivers that are shaped like a star or asterisk with a hole in the middle? I need them to experiment with fixing my external harddrive myself before I give up and pay to get it fixed. Fucking piece of shit that it is.

Electronics stores and computer stores. Maplins in the U.K has stuff like that. Perhaps a Radio Shack for U.S people like yourself?

You mean torx?

Around here you can find them in any shop with a decent selection of tools. Tools shops, shops specialized in cars or electronics - those sorts of places.

It's like the Torx head, but it's got a hole in the middle. It's not solid.

Sorry, missed that bit. It is a Torx variant though, called security torx or TR Torx. TR for tamper resistant. I suppose I'd head to my local tools shop if I wanted a set of those. Here's an Amazon link with a picture.

Lately, my internet browser audio stops working if my computer has been on a while but mp3s from my hard drive still play fine. It works fine again once I restart but if I use programs that require a lot of ram or if the computer has just been on a long time the audio just doesn't work if I try to play a video on youtube or something. Anyone know what might be causing this?

is just the browser affected or also a media player; like Winamp, foobar etc.?

Have you tried to de-/re-install the plug-ins for it? Maybe there are corrupted libraries or something not installed correctly.

I use Firefox. Maybe, I'll try. I mainly wanted to know if it might be a hardware issue so if it sounded like bad ram or something then I could replace it, because I plan to reformat my computer very soon anyway. I'll try your suggestion in a bit, but I won't know if it worked until later on when the computer has been on for a while (it usually happens within 1-2 days of it being on).

So I am chilling playing fallout 2 again and out of no where this white verticle bar appears down the right side of my screen. It goes all the way from top to bottom and it is about an inch across. It is always there no matter what and honestly it is getting a little annoying.

I have an Aurora laptop and when I hooked it up to an external monitor the white bar was not there.

Any ideas what it is and more importantly what I am looking for is how much it will cost to get it fixed?

Hardware issue??? As you are able to play MP3s with media player, this does not seem to be likely. Reformating should solve the problem.

What have you done? Do you mean shut-down windows or just Winamp?

Have you tried other programs like Foobar2000 or the like? Are they affected by the same problem?

Sort of forgot about this thread ... anyway, couple of minutes after I posted that reply WMP started working again (???) so I switched back. I'm still sort of confused as to what the hell happened but for some reason WMP is working again while Winamp isn't.

It told me to shut down Winamp and I don't have the problem with other programs.

I just went to open up iTunes, and it wouldn't let me play anything. So I looked deeper into the problem. I had all of my music in a drive labeled Media(E: ) or something like that. Its a drive my uncle put in a few months back so I had extra room for my music. Well, I went to go find it, and it wasn't there. The entire E drive is missing. It was working fine yesterday, and now, all of a sudden, its gone. Any idea what happened?

The problem is that I do not know hoe the MS-programs are called in English. In Germany it is called "Verwaltung"and the translation would administration or maintenance; it is in the system folder. When you start this program you can check for drives and the sort; look for drive management or drive administration. Look if the drive is mentioned there ...

I just bought a new Video card for my PC, a EVGA 8800GT to be exact.

After installing it I turn on my computer only to find that it won't go past the windows boot screen(XP Name and Logo shows up with progress bar and after just a black screen).

I contacted EVGA's customer support and they told me to try booting into safe mode but when I do this my computer gets stuck on the mup.sys driver on the list. I have let it sit for an hour with no progress being made it just sits there.

Has anyone had this problem or are there any solutions? Is my card, purchased from Newegg, DOA? Please note that I don't have another PC that I can install it in to see if it works on another system.

  • do a google search for the term mup.sys
  • do a knowledge base search for the term mup.sys

You will find help this way...

Ok so none of my 4 USB ports work. It always says device has malfunctioned no matter what I plug into it. If I wiggle it around then it will work but then the slightest movement will cause it to disconnect again. the way I have a laptop with XP. Can anyone help me with this?

Also my battery doesn't seem to charge anymore. Do I need ot get a new battery now?

Oh and another problem is that I can't play CDs or DVDs. When I do I just get really bad choppy sound. I can rip CDs into mp3 fine though.

Is this onto a laptop? I have heard it to be some what common for cd\dvd drives to not play music or movies straight from the disc with out being jumpy and choppy.

*edit* Realized it was a laptop from the battery being mentioned.

The battery could quite well be the problem for the USB's not working. (Not getting a good power supply through them)

Actually this is becoming a common problem. I've never had it myself and I've never seen a definitive cure. I'm leaning to thinking that this might be a hardware problem, since you say that wiggling will cause it to work again/stop it from working. Seems like some contact is too loose or something. This would be extra plausible if you've handled the laptop roughly from time to time. You can try restacking the USB drivers as well, before, by going into the control panel in safe mode, deleting all devices in Device Manager related to USB, restarting and letting Windows re-install the drivers.

That's very likely, yes. Do the USB problem remain when you run on battery eliminator?

As there are always problem with the up-to-date situation of software and therefore with the ability to be protected from exploits, this program might help to keep the state of the system on a actual level:

https://psi.secunia.com/

The program analyzes all programs that are installed on a pc and offers direct links to a software-download - from the developers - in a case some 'insecure' or exploitable software has been detected.

I had to format my OS hard drive after upgrading my processor and motherboard, and after I did that, all my hard drives got screwed up, namewise:
C turned to D
D turned to E
Z turned to C

Anyway I can change that? It's nothing too important, I'm just used to it the other way as I normally tend not to install anything on my OS drive and now I get confused between my games-music-video drive to my OS drive and such...

Ok i made a forum bout this but then i realized that there was a whole thread on computer problems so ill just post it here.

Ok, So i just finished downloading a computer program, and its on my desktop as i type this. Every time I click it, it tells me i need a disk to play it. It comes with an MDF file and i got Alcohol 120% but I dont know what to do.

Someone said
Quote:
If this is an honest thread, the fix is simple. In Alcohol (or any virtual drive software) find the "mount" function and point it to that mdf file. It'll create a virtual disk drive, that mdf file is the image of the disk. Then the program should run, assuming you have the proper copy protection avoidance turned on in your program (I don't use alcohol, so I can't give you exact instructions)

but i cant find the mount button and every time i put it in Alcohol it says it cant be recognized.

Alcohol 120%, imo, sucks. Daemon tools works better...
Anyway, there should be a small .mds file with the .mdf. And... really just google there are tons of topics about this, if I had alcohol i'd tell you, but I uninstalled it long ago to replace it by Daemon tools (which is all free, btw)

A co-worker's computer has a virus (I believe). He got a screen that said "Would you like to download such and such antivirus now?" He kept clicking no, but every time he would do that, the window would pop back up. A couple days later, he clicked on yes, and it said "your task manager has been disabled." He shut down the computer real quick, and now it won't start up. He says it goes from the Windows XP screen, to a blue screen, then restarts itself and does the process over...and over and over.

Any ideas? This guy is over me, so if I get his computer fixed, it could score some major points

Hold down F8 on power-up, boot into safe mode with networking. Download Adaware/Spybot S&D, open that and your antivirus and run scans with them individually. It should pick up the spyware or virus, and it may fix your problem.

EDIT: Wait, is this a work computer where installing such software is against office or company policy?

is it possible to install programs while using the safe mode? From some forum I have just read, it seems that this is not quite easy and always working.

If you have a safe mode with network access you can try an online-scanner; Kapersky has one. You can use programs like Autorun and HijackThis to clean up the windows start-up menu.
You might want to use Gmer, too... in case it is a rootkit or so.

I've never experienced trouble installing software in safe mode, but I suppose it may depend on the OS. If you've got access to an account which has the correct rights to install software it should work fine, I think. The online scanners you've suggested are probably a safer bet though.

Safe mode doesn't allow registry changes or entries, from my understanding any way.

EDIT: Wait, is this a work computer where installing such software is against office or company policy?
No, it's a personal computer. Oddly enough, my job is to fix the work computers, but I have NO idea how to fix something like this. I'm not very experienced. I am one of 2 computer people here, and the girl i work for doesn't know shit.

I believe he said he tried to start up in safe mode with networking, and it did the same thing. He said he tried to boot up in every mode there was  I'm pretty sure he's fucked and will have to reimage the hard drive or something, but I want to make sure there's no possible way to get in there and save his stuff before we do that.

Why don't you use a Linux live-CD and get thus an access to the internet? Knoppix should fit the purpose. As you are online, you can then scan the harddisks with a online-virus scanner, like Kapersky and try to fix the messed up system.

The virus sounds like smitfraud.c, smitfraud recommends anti-virus software via 'windows alerts', disables features like task manager and screen properties; it is also one of the most annoying viruses to get rid of.

I agree with oneyoudontknow boot using a linux live disc mount the hard drive and scan it via online virus scanners or just mount it hen grab the files you want then chuck them onto a USB.

Alright guys, I have a bit of an issue that I'm hoping you can help me with.

I have a video iPod and I want to put some movies on it, basically. I was trying to find a way to rip Death Wish 3 onto my laptop, but I don't know how. The file will only execute when the D drive is double-clicked and if I get into the file folders, there's no executable for me to rip or anything.

Also iTunes doesn't really give me a way to rip into their either. How do you rip a DVD onto a laptop? Do I need a special program?

Try a program like CloneDvd > http://clonedvd.en.softonic.com/

CloneDVD is a piece of shit. I had to instal a CSS decoding program to get it to recognize the files, but all three DVDs I try to get it to read it came up with some bullshit error message like "the disc is dirty" or "cannot read this file location" even though the DVD files were plainly listed in the window on the right.
