Since we already have all the help threads for Metal, we should also start doing some Non-Metal help threads as well. I know we have quite a few Grind and Hardcore Punk threads already, but to avoid more repetitiveness of such threads, lets all just cram all the existing Punk sub-genres out there into this one whole thread.

So to start things off, I've been hearing some more punk genres like Anarcho Punk and stuff, got any bands for me?

Also more bands in the vein of Insect Warfare!

Goddamn man, Insect Warfare is brilliant. It's a pity they broke up though (as far as I know).

Unfortunately my knowledge of anarcho punk is painfully limited, so the only band that comes to mind would be Crass. They seem like an interesting band, ideologically speaking, though I don't really like what I heard on The Feeding of the 5000.

Though the This Comp Kills Fascists, Vol. 1 compilation is not strictly punk (quite a few grindcore bands in it), I still feel it deserves a mention here.

Magrudergrind is one band that I've been big into for a while, and they have a nice energy to them. Lately though, I've been listening to a lot of Trap Them, though only one song. xD. That one song would be Pulse Mavens, off their Seance Prime EP. Pretty sweet crust punk stuff, though there are some other influences mixed in.

Crass are rubbish musically, immensely overrated.

Just go straight to Subhumans.

Don't think they've released much, I've only heard The Day the Country Died, but it's quite solid.

For me, The terms D-Beat and Anarcho Punk are kinda blurred ( or maybe I have a misunderstanding of the terms) so I'd like someone to please give me a proper explanation. for some "anarcho punk", check out the band Conflict's Increase the pressure for some solid stuff.

Great idea btw, maybe we could rename the rap appreciation thread to The Rap help thread as well :)

In my eyes d beat is hardcore in the vein of Discharge which makes extensive use of the beat it is named after, while anarcho punk is generally a term akin to 'viking metal', in that the lyrical themes in the song dictate the tag.

Also, I second Conflict; they're like Crass taken a step further. Better in every aspect and they sound a great deal more pissed off to boot. Berkshire Cunt is my favourite punk song; the one on It's Time to See Who's Who Now (the rerecorded version) is pure awesome.

They've got at least 5 or 6 albums. "The Day The Country Died" is highly recommended, as is "EP-LP".

Lucky me then. Just downloaded EP-LP. Wahoo.

By the way, is there anyone hear who's heard of the Japanese d-beat band, Disclose? Read about them in a Zero Tolerance article and I have to say, I'm fairly intrigued. Any idea where I can download any of their stuff. (PM if the link can't be posted).

I do recall having Conflict's Increase The Pressure though I probably didn't like it, since it's not on my iPod anymore. Oh well. Better go check it out again, try to find what I'm missing out on. xD.

Their first LP, "Tragedy" is pretty good stuff. The guitar tone is just ridiculous, and the album is very short, but overall its an enjoyable little listen. Not my favorite d-beat band, but entirely capable.

Insect Warfare are still together and have a Full Length scheduled for 2009. They finished a split that will be released on 7 inch with Agoraphobic Nosebleed, did 4 tracks for This Comp Kills Fascists and have another split scheduled for early 2009. They are doing some Noisecore shit for 625Thrash right now.

OT: here is some punk that still sounds good today:
Subhumans - EP-LP. A collection of the best of Subhumans from their first 4 eps. Pure UK punk that will have you hooked by the first chorus. Probably my favorite punk band ever.
Corrosion of Confirmity - Eye for An Eye. This is out of print, so you will probably have to Soulseek it. It's hardcore punk in DIY fashion when these guys were still in college. Every song rocks and you can even hear early signs of grindcore in some of the drum sequences. Amazing hard core from the early 80's.

The list goes on, but I don't have time to justify it - and don't want a MOD to hit with with their big bad stick for just typing out cool bands (Amebix and Exploited rock though...)

Ok first and foremost, anyone who says crass sucked is batshit crazy. they couldnt play their instruments, but they could write songs. i have days where i listen to every crass album in a row and those are some of the best days of my life.

I love anarcho punk. Most anarcho stuff, the early stuff anyway wasnt really all that hardcore sounding. It all varies from band to band but the politics are what defined the genre, not the sound.

Zounds - listen to this band! They had some very intelligent lyrics and steve lake could actually play his instrument. The sound varies from extremely poppy songs to more down tempo stuff. They took a lot of cues from all sorts of bands, and i even hear some of The Who in their sound. Curse of the Zounds 2xlp discography

The Mob - i talked about them in a previous death rock thread, but this is some really dark stuff. Great lyrics that bring to mind amebix, they just arent metal in the least. Let the Tribe Increase is a complete discography minus the I Ching demo.

Poison Girls - Toured and played gigs with crass. The lead singer Vi Subversa was a middle aged mother who, so she wasnt some middle class suburban white kid singing about why to hate the government. I cant even describe their sound at all. Check it out, they have a 3cd collection out.

Oi Polloi - long time scottish hardcore band. Some Oi (early stuff) mostly just burly and pissed off hardcore crust. Check out the fuaim catha lp. Its their best for sure. these guys really put their money where their mouth is, no posturing. Pretty sweet documentary on youtube about them too.

Cress - This band is like conflict, amebix, and killing joke all wrapped into one. Some of the most honest lyrics that you can really relate to. They have a drum machine. Greed MAchine and The Money Tree 2xlp discography.

Omega Tribe - one of the younger bands to come out of the uk anarcho scene. Sounds kinda like Zounds and crass mixed in a blender. Get No Love Lost lp. check out the song manmade...its a good one.

if you want to know about anymore i could go on for a while. let me know.

Yay, thats awesome news.
I find it funny that everybody likes Insect Warfare. Well, I do as well.

Here is some random stuff that comes in my mind.

Krigshot...Decent Hardcore; Mieszko from Nasum played there.

Iskra...Awesome mix of Thrash/Crust/Black Metal, one of my favourites. You can DL their stuff for free btw.

Skitsystem/Martyrdod/Driller Killer...Swedish Crust, enough said.

Maybe more later.

Teen Idols sound pretty close to Minor Threat, fast punchy songs.

Millions of Dead Cops - Old style Hardcore shit, subordinately worth a shot. Pretty god damned political in parts, too.

Nunfuckers - I forget where they're from(Canada I think), but they have a Minor Threat sound to them.

Fugazi - This is Ian MacKayes band after he left MT.

7 Seconds -Local Reno band from back in the day that made it big. Fast and angry Hardcore.

There is also a whole host of straight-edge bands that may be worth looking into as well, xAFBx $ylvester $taline, XFilesX, Infest, NikkieXVickie, George Harrison

Yeah... but this is a punk thread. They aren't punk.
They really aren't worth listening to at all.

@About Insect Warfare. I could have swore I saw on their last.fm or something that they broke up!
But if not that's great. Because they were some fucking awesome grind.

a lot of people consider the "anarcho punk" movement to be the slew of bands in the similar style of crass coming out of the UK in the 80's...and i've also heard people refer to any hardcore punk/crust band with anarchist type lyrics to be anarcho punk.

the mob and omega tribe as mentioned above are some of the only bands in that crass style that i ever enjoyed. add also hit parade, the sinyx, the snipers, and 7th plague. all of which fall loosely into that style of crass records punk but not as sloppy/noisy/irritating as the band crass themselves.

as far as hardcore punk with anarcho lyrics i would check out antischism...fast and angry but with a good sense of melody and dual male/female vocals. a classic band and in my opinion one of the best to ever play that style.

his hero is gone is another good one..but they're definitely more metal than any of the previous bands mentioned. a good combination of dark dissonant crust, d-beat, and sludge.

I have a CD with Eye For An Eye + Six Songs With Mike Singing, and it's really good. The versions with Mike Dean singing are great.

I dig Animosity too.

Oi Polloi have so many great songs--"Boot Down The Door", "Americans Out", "Nazi Scum", "Unite and Win", "Skinhead", etc. And their name is such a cool play on words.

Oi Polloi's Fuaim Catha is definitely seconded. Very angry, catchy punk rock with an interesting political standpoint. "Fuck Everybody Who Voted Tory" is a damn classic song, and probably has one of the coolest middle breaks in the genre.

I must give an obligatory mention to Toxic Narcotic. Their style of extremely raw, punishing, and anthemic hardcore/crust is a definite highlight of the genre. You really can't go wrong with this band, in my opinion. It's too bad an injury to one of the musicians put this band on hold.

I personally have a soft spot for the old British bands: Sham 69, The Buzzcocks, early Clash...you really can't go wrong. These bands all showed an individual personality within their music that I find fascinating, and "Borstal Breakout" by Sham is probably my favorite punk rock song of all time.

Same here, bro--LOVE the old stuff from the UK--Buzzocks, Clash, Damned, Sham, Cockney Rejects, Cocksparrer, etc.

"Borstal Breakout" is a great song, along with "New Rose" by the Damned, "Harmony in My Head" by Buzzcocks, "Oi Oi Oi" by the Rejects, "Chip on Your Shoulder" by 'Sparrer, The Clash's version of "I Fought the Law", et al.

for anyone looking for grind style stuff or are new to grind in general..heres some worthwhile bands to check out.

Phobia: 80's grindcore..They have a lot of solid material to check out. Look them up on the Metal-Archives homepage. I think everything from them is solid, so experiment.

Magrudergrind: This band is really fucking annoying if you aren't into constant blastbeats and monotonous screaming. Also, they have no bass guitarist haha. Though, I'd suggest them..they are fast enough to be somewhat interesting. Check out Religious Baffle.

Extreme Noise Terror: Masterminds of crusty/grind shit in the early days. I'd suggest you check out anything before 1995. Also, if you want a SICK death/grind album, check out their 'Being and Nothing' album.

Heres a few more:

Prophecy of Doom
Nuclear Death
Fuck on the Beach (fun grind)
ACxDC
Sanitys Dawn

(hopefully my previous descriptions redeem me from making a small list :))

I'll give more on request.

I second this wholeheartedly. I haven't stopped listening to this since I gave it a second chance on your reccomendation. It took a few listens to really sink in and now it just wont leave my brain!!

My favorite song is "I wish", most depressing sound!!! The monotone vocals are genius!

I remember they had one 7" in particular that was killer! It had a song with a chorus "Drink drink drink, drink some more, drink drink drink till im on the floor" and another one that went "fuck this fuck that fuck them fuck you I DONT CARE" hahaha COOL!

What do you guys think of Mob 47? I saw there complete disco in my local cd store, but the review for the band in general had been either great or terrible. No middle ground to be had at all.

Finally some Zounds love! Great for when you want some punk which is chilled out and more subtle. War/Subvert is undoubtedly their best song; I had the chorus from it in my head for days.

I would second this mention. They can get fairly monotonous after a while but when they are good they are dead on. Plus they have awesome lyrics.

It wouldn't hurt to check out their older stuff, particularly Terrifyer. For the most part, Terrifyer has 1 minute long songs, but it should be good.

I love lots of classic punk such as the Ramones and The Clash, The Misfits, the Dead Kennedys, old school hardcore. I also love grind, and though I like straight-up crust, my knowledge of the subgenre is rather limited.

Iron Cross obviously nicked the skinhead "look" (i.e., shaved head, boots, braces, & rolled up jeans), but musically, they were closer to hardcore than Oi!.

Well, I don't know too much about Oi! as I haven't heard much of it, but songs like Crucified for Your Sins and Shadows in the Night really seem to be more Oi! to me.

But then, that's two songs from a seven song EP, so you win.

When I think of "Oi!", I think of that late 70s/early 80s British streetpunk--Sham, Rejects, The Business, Blitz, Upstarts, etc. Most of that stuff was typified by catchy pub sing-a-longs, grafted with punk. Lyrically, those bands were concerned with the plight of the common man--you know, the lack of jobs, the trouble at soccer games (how many Oi! bands had songs about the friggin' "terraces"?), subcultural violence between punks, skins, teds, mods, etc.

Iron Cross came from America, so, while there was some overlap in sentiments, it wasn't quite the same thing. And musically, Iron Cross probably had more in common with their fellow D.C. hardcore bands, than they did with Brit streetpunk.

Yeah but last time I checked Bad Brains was a bunch of black rastafarians, and Mob is white dudes I'm pretty sure. Besides I never said it was unheard of although I guess your assuming I thought it was due to my use of "!?!?!?"

Looking for some grindcore in the vein of Pig Destroyer's Phantom Limb

I'm not much of a grindcore fan in general, but fuck, that album was amazing.

It wouldn't hurt to check out their older stuff, particularly Terrifyer. For the most part, Terrifyer has 1 minute long songs, but it should be good.

Terrifyer was actually the first Pig Destroyer album I heard. It's pretty good, too.

Yuck @ Phantom Limb :D

Do you like the longer songs? If so check out Fuck The Facts - they play grind/death and have 6 minute songs with a chick singing.

First off, no one 'sounds like the vocalist from PxDx so I can't help you there, but here are some bands in roughly the same style:

Phobia - Cruel (produced by Scott Hull from PxDx)
One of my all-time favorite grind acts. They also have a new release (releate date: late Oct) called 22 Random Acts of Violence. Highly recommended.

PxDx - Prowler in the Yard
This will make you wonder how you ended up liking Phantom Limb. This was grind for a while. Everything you like about PL with nothing you don't. Classic.

Kill The Client - Escalation of Hostilities (mastered by Scott Hull from PxDx)
These guys also have a new one released on Oct. (Saw them and Phobia last week - the new shit is far better in style and intensity.) Top class political grind.

Rotten Sound - Murderworks and Exit
Produced by Milo (ex: Nasum) these guys are grind/hardcore and fully pissed off. Some of the best grind drumming and seriously intense music. The vocals are perfect for the music.

*edit - sorry for lame formatting
