We did this thing on another forum I'm in, and since I remember that there was a Chess thread here recently and people were discussing on having online matches, I figured that it wouldn't be a bad idea to do it on chess.com

If we get a good number of players (say, more or less 10) I'll setup the tournament. My user name there is also lastdodobird.

Just sign-up on chess.com and post your user id here so that you can be included in the invite.

If anything needs to be clarified, ask your questions here.

If you've already signed up and waiting for the tourney to start, go ahead and explore the site and play online games as much as you wish. I think I'm playing 15 simultaneous matches right now. (I'm not good, BTW)

I just might want to learn the game of chess so I can compete in the tournament proposed on this board. I'll probably suck. I hope no one will inject 'roids into their brain for this one. I look forward to it.

The basics aren't too hard, but the strategy and technique takes a long time to be good at and master... and the best way to get good at it is practice, practice, practice. Kindda like taking up an instrument to play... Kindda like most things in life. Hehehe.

I haven't played longer than you. Hehe. And I'm actually losing more than half my games on the site right now.

Oh, and another interesting thing they have there... They have this thing called "vote chess" where there are two groups that compete and they vote on what move to make. I think the most common time span is 1 move/1 day. Interesting thing. I joined several.

BTW... The matches on chess.com are usually on a 1 day/move or 3 days/move basis... but that doesn't mean that the matches go on at a snail's pace. 1 day/3 days is just the maximum amount of time you have to make a move (presumably so that people in different time zones can compete; and, people who are relatively busy can also play) - if you both are online at the same time and aren't doing anything else, you can carry on with your match at a regular pace.

PJust learning the rules and all the moves, strategies like castleling and how they work might take some time for me to memorize but I think I'll finally jump into it. Chess promotes good decision making abilities.

What's Blitz? Have any of you guys played Axis and Allies? I know it's not chess, just a Milton Bradley board game but you reminded me of it.

I'll be up for a few matches. I can't right this instant as I'm at work and quite busy. One evening/weekend I'll check it out.

I sometimes play at Fly or Die: www.flyordie.com/chess/

Can't sign up right now, but count me in if it's played over a number of days. I can't make daily play but I love to play chess. I'm a tad rusty but used to be decent.

Hell yeah, Axis & Allies own

I have the PC game and the board game. Good memories with that game

I want to play Allies and Axis, my dad used to play that game all the time, but now he can't find it.

A house divided is a pretty good game too.

But on topic, are we going to have a set time to start this tournament?

Don't worry, it's played over a number of days. I'm going to set it at a maximum of 3 days per move. Of course if you and your opponent happen to be both online at the same time, you can play the game at a regular pace until such time that someone logs out or the game ends.

So far we have:

lastdodobird
Gah-Ruh
Vook
Suechtler
Dragondance_metal
thegreatflashman

@Sir_General_Flashman: I'm thinking of leaving this thread open for 2 more days to gather more participants, then we can start.

@marktheviktor: Blitz is "speed chess" where both sides have around 5 minutes each (or less) on their respective timers to finish the game.

huh... so here's the deal...

I just found out that there are apparently certain requirements that a member has to meet to be able to create a tournament.

Also, a member can't participate in more than one tournament on chess.com if s/he isn't a paying member.

The thing is that I'm already in an ongoing tourney and I haven't met all the requirements yet.

It doesn't mean this isn't gonna happen though. It's just gonna take longer to start.

So you guys that want to join, you can brush up on your chess for the meantime and do what you have to do before we get started.

And for those that have already signed-up, try and explore the site... really. I was surprised at how loaded that site is with features.

This is probably going to happen in a week or two. You'll receive a PM on chess.com and I'll send you all PMs here on MA so that you'll be informed that the tourney has started.

So far, we have the following chess.com members participating:

lastdodobird
Gah-Ruh
Vook
Suechtler
Dragondance_metal
thegreatflashman
Orion_metalhead
roidesrois

My id there is Spenot, hope I'll have time for a few games (been a long time since my last game of chess, 4-5 years, so I'm really rusty).

LDodo, how come I find myself almost immediately involved in anything you bring up?

I added all of the current players to the my "friend" list. I'm up for games if anyone wants to play before the tournament.
