I have an 80gig classic ipod, it's not enough, I have a lot of music, but anyway.. Lately it's been screwing up, like cover arts have been disappearing or being scrambled and songs are getting mixed in with each other on rare occasions. Example: I was listening to Exodus's Bonded by blood album and halfway through a song Dying Fetus started playing! So yeah, ipods kinda suck but ipod quiz2 is a very good way to pass the time on the pass or in a boring class ahahah.

I got a 20 gb iPod (4th gen? I have no idea) when I was 16 but it got pretty beat up and the hard drive isn't working anymore... and the Apple company cheated me out of 60$ :fuck:. Since I don't plan on frittering away my money on that company ever again, does anyone know if I can tinker with it and maybe get a roomier hard drive to fit in its case? Good idea or no? I don't care about it having color or photos or videos or games or anything. I just want it to play music and tell me what's playing--that's it. I'm decently handy with electronics but if the job is a bit much for me, I'm sure at least a few of my friends can help me.

Other than that, I have a tape player from the mid-90s that used to belong to my mother and a CD player from around 2000 that still work and are still in use. At home I either play music on my low budget stereo or on the computer using Winamp and computer speakers that have withstood the test of time for nearly 10 years.

Oh and I dream of the day when there are 1 TB mp3 players, preferably with an SSD in them, that are resistant to bumps, drops, and scratches... all at an affordable price. Until that's developed, I won't be spending money on any new mp3 players.

My baby:

It's a touch-screen Samsung that works awesome, and looks better than japanese schoolgirls (above 18 of course) getting it on. Best music device ever.

Got a these bitches at Canadian Tire for $49.99 (includes "external sound dampening" technology)

Image

Those are Phillips, btw.

Quite a nice setup for the metalhead on the go.

No iPod here, sometimes I think I'm the last person on the planet without one. Anyway, at work I listen to direct WAV or FLAC rips off my computer through my Sennheiser 280 Pros, which are fantastic headphones if you want a closed, over the ear design. At home, I terrify my neighbors with large speakers and absurdly powerful amplifiers =)

I've got one of those classy Marantz amps built sometime in the eighties (it's at the shop being repaired right now so I can't check the exact model) into which I've plugged the following:
-Technics SL-PG32A CD player
-Yamaha K-07 cassette deck
-Pro-Ject Debut III turntable

And all this is connected to a pair of these things, which I just got last week:

Image

Previously I was running on a pair of floor speakers my mom's friend built for her already back in the seventies. I was a bit sceptical about buying such a small pair of speakers after those finally broke down, but these Q ones actually pack a lot more punch as well.

Most of the stuff I have is secondhand, and cost me altogether about €600. Quite a good setup for a broke student such as myself, though.

I don't usually listen to music outside the house, but I've got a 4 GB Creative Zen V which I usually take with me on longer trips. I've been thinking of buying one of those vintage yellow Sony walkmen off eBay so I can listen to my cultsettes while on the go.

I've got a 80Gig Ipod Video, with my entire digital collection on it. I've only recently started purchasing CD's, so I have to buy my current collection :P

I need a pair of new in ear earbuds, and I was looking at a 100$ pair from Shure. Anyone have any feedback about them?

I also have a 80$ pair of Sennheiser 212HD Pro's
They are great on the bass, I love them for my metal.

My life goal is to get a ribbon speaker set, I'm a bit of a quality whore :P I have all my tunes at at least 192kbps VBR, with a 19.7Khz lowpass filter on it all, all encoded in MP3. Although, I am thinking about re-encoding the CD's I do purchase into OGG format.

Way too many ipods in this thread :D

Main rig:

NAD C162 preamp
NAD C272 poweramp
NAD C525BEE cd
Dual CS 505-3 with Grado Silver pickup
DLS R55 speakers

This is pretty alright, the NADs are entry level stuff, and will probably be upgraded sometime. Ye olde Dual is some thirty years old, and actually my wifes. It has a better definition and overall frequency range than the Marantz (TT42) I used to have, and with the Grado it beats anything else I could get in this price range (even though it has a slight rumble). What really moves this is the DLS speakers, incredibly great sound for such cheap speakers.

Image

This is what I use for listening to music in general. I don't have speakers on the pc, since they were crap, but plugged some Denon AH-D350 headphones in, mostly for checking myspace, youtube, a few mp3's and stuff. I use my Nokia N73 on the go and umm... its really crap, and frankly, even though I might buy an mp3-player at some point, mp3 is second grade IMO.
I'm amazed how many people who relies on mp3/ipod as a main source. To me its like preferring pictures of food over real food.

If you get a decent preamp and good headphones/ECH's, you can get great sound out of a portable device. Of course, it's not going to lineup to a non-portable system of reasonable quality, but portability is the issue right? There are a few portable pre-amps you can get, one for around 160$, the Total BitHead preamp. A set of decent Sennheiser ECH or one of the super high end Shure ECH's can really kick the quality up.

The only real problem with MP3's is that you can't encode high frequency sounds, buut your ear can't hear anything much above 20Khz anyways. Which is why it's the 19.7Khz lowpass is recommended.

Sure, you can do a lot to improve, its still a lesser format though. I usually download mp3's to check out bands, and it sounds reasonably well when I sometimes blast it over the stereo. I'd never pay for mp3's though. If I like what I hear, I'll by a physical album (cd/lp).

I'd rather go for a portable player with EAC-FLAC for 'roaming'...

the difference between a vbr mp3 (reaching to 320kbps), and flac - at least to most people - is negligible. hence why flacs aren't worth anything other than backups, unless you have the most technically advanced soundrig known to man.

80gb ipod classic (my 3rd retail ipod, my probably 8th ipod in general counting refurbs/rmas - I've had all sorts of bad luck with them)

lg dare w/ 2gb microsd card (for when I didnt have my ipod)

generic car stereo (cds)

sony fontopia MDR-ED21LP earphones (that have actually lasted probably 6 months, despite being all tangled on shit in my pocket, or on my person when I fall asleep listening to my ipod)

for the computer:

winamp 5.5 w/ soundblaster audigy2 (soft-mod to audigy4) on a logitech x620 6.1 surround speaker setup

5gen Ipod when I'm out or around people--like others in this thread, I've had this contraption for 2 years and I haven't had any major problems.

When no one's at home I'll put stuff in my stereo.

I don't like how iTunes tries to take over your computer, I refuse to buy an overpriced iPod.

I'm content with the 8g Sandisk Sansa I paid a whopping $40 for. Had one of their smaller units, bought refurb for $15 and it lasted over a year getting bashed around at the gym with me.

I agree I had an old iPod Nano which was ok for awhile but once my music collection grew it became woefully inadequate, not to mention the battery was pretty much shot to hell. iTunes sucks really hard too (Why do I have to install Quicktime?)

Now I have a nice black 80 GB Zune, and it kicks ass. Awesome screen, no retarded wheel thing to slide around, and the Zune software is in my opinion better than iTunes. Updating it does kinda suck though. The earbuds that come with the 80GB Zune are actually pretty nice.

In my dorm room though I have an old Sanyo stereo/CD/Cassette Player that I can blast to annoy the people in my hall.

I've been into metal for about 9 years now. Whenever i am out on my own i am listening to music.

To start off with i used to record CDs to tape and used a walkman i got through two of them. My upgrade from that was a portable CD player, then i got a minidisc player, i could get 3 albums on one disc. Then i got a 20gb iPod but ran out of space so now i have a 60gb iPod, not full yet, i wonder what i'll have next. I love the fact i can take my entire collection with me where ever i go

Second to last person.

I use my PSPs (yes, I have more than one, lol) and an ancient sony walkman mp3 player that uses minidiscs! obsolete technology FTW! I hate listening to anything on my computer, at all, ever, though, I'd rather listen to CDs or the record player.

 Exactly the same, until I got to the stage the battery would last me 30 seconds. Literally!

I'll stick with my Creative Zen Vision M 30GB mp3 player with a pair of £25 headphones, at home I wear a big pair of Sony headphones, terrific sound!

its a bug that happens when the files get corrupted when they're transferred onto the ipod, usually. you can fix it by just recopying the affected albums/files

On the go I use a 80gb iPod Classic. It's all around the best mp3 player with mass storage imho. I've never had a problem with the clickwheel like a lot have so I generally enjoy using it very much. I had a 30gb 5gen until it crapped out on me after 4 years of heavy use.

I do not know where this general hatred for iPods is coming from. I have one, my family has them, and my friends all have them. None of them break down prematurely, and all are reliable for many years.

I'm looking for a better music solution at home, something like something under 200 because I have other things to spend cash on. I was thinking about Grado SR-80's or 125's. If anyone has recs I'd be willing to listen.

iPods are great, i've had the odd problem in the past but a google search gives a solution normally. You can't beat the storage to cost ratio (that i am aware of)

You answered the first part of your question with the second part. It's popular. People don't like popular things. Hence, the Zune.

I guess. Fuck if I know. I have an 80 GB Ipod. It works fine. And I drop it. ALOT.

Somehow metal does something to you that you need to listen to heaver, darker, faster music, and you collection grows to 50GB+... You soon get bored og a 50GB+ metal collection and maybe you'll have a 100GB+ metal collection. Sounds terrifc, doesn't it? I?m on my way now...
BTW I think i'm going to get an 8GB Sony WalkmanVideo or maybe a 16 GB I don't know yet... I'm still thinking, I got new earphones and I'm still please by their quallity so my cellphone sounds just fine for me right now

For those of you who have Zune programs, how is it possible to get downloaded music (say, from Soulseek) into the Zune program? I am having trouble doing so, mainly for the fact that I just got a 120 GB Zune today.

Guess what??? I got my new 8GB Sony WalkmanVideo mp3 player, it rocks!
Earphones included kind of suck but fortunately I got some others before.
I got it at the amazing price of $1600 (mexican pesos of course which should be around $150 US) the store said it costed 3100 but it was on a freaking post-christmas sale! I'm kind of disapointed becasue it need WMP11 to transfer music and I've had some problems with that before.
Nevertheless it really rocks!!!
Hopefully it'll last other 2 or 3 years with me :P

Either studio-monitor headphones (preferably open back, but the exaggerated bass in closed-back headphones can be more appealing depending on the artist/style) with a 1GB iPod shuffle (it sucks, but it was free) or my KRK RoKit 6 reference monitors.

I keep it pretty simple with my 8 GB iPod. When I'm listening to music at
home I just use a basic CD player although I would like to buy a record player sometime.

I have a black 8 GB iPod Nano, and it works pretty good despite having a few scratches on it. The earphones I use are from Philips, and it sounds pretty nice. On my computer, I use iTunes. Ever since I got this new computer a few months ago, I've been really happy with how well iTunes is working. Thing is though, I have an external hard drive which has all of my music on it, but for some strange reason it won't show up on my computer whenever I turn it on. I'll probably have to try it on a different computer to make sure that it's not the hard drive. The speakers I use for this computer is a stereo system with a 5 CD changer from Philips, and it sounds fucking immense. I love it.

I used to have a 6 gb Zen Micro. The motherfucker was tough and served me well for 3+ years of intensive use and abuse playing his swansong. The thing is still in one piece and the battery still works (even though it always lasted 3/4 hours instead of the 12 it was supposed to), but apparently the hard drive is fucked up beyond any possible repairing, or so I was told when I emailed the technical suport. It felt like losing an old friend when it stopped working :(
Now I got a 16gb iPod nano for christmas but it just doesn't feel the same, and I am wary because of all the negative feedback about them. Sure it's all small and slim but even with the protective case I bought, it still seems fragile and breakable. Plus, iTunes sucks.

I have the shittiest luck with mp3 players. First one was a 1gb iLO player that cost $75. I got tired of the lack of space so I bought a Phillips iGo 2GB player...6months later it broke. Then I purchased a 4GB Creative Zen which was good, until it stopped working.

Then I purchased an Insignia Pilot 4GB player with expandable slot. Loved it because I was able to turn it into a 12GB player. Then it stopped working.

Now I have a Sansa Clip 2GB.

I listen to that mp3 player with a pair of Skullcandy earphones. For the computer I use winamp, and a pair of Skullcandy Hesh headphones.

Needless to say I'm in search for a reasonably priced mp3 player with either a decent amount of space (8GB - 80GB) or the option to expand the memory with a SD/SDHC card, and one that doesn't stop working after six months.

For those of you who have Zune programs, how is it possible to get downloaded music (say, from Soulseek) into the Zune program? I am having trouble doing so, mainly for the fact that I just got a 120 GB Zune today.

In the software, you should be able to edit the "monitored folders" setting (which is under Settings<Software<Collection); this takes care of what folders the program will scan to find media. Once you add the folder where you keep your files from Soulseek, everything should automatically import to your collection.

The simplest speakers that the earth has ever created and a CD player. A pretty quaint set-up, but it works, and it's awesome.

definition of black metal..to put it in its most basic, basic form...operatic meaning orchestras are involved, along with the guitar/bass/drums, you get my drift.

I did have an old Creative Zen (the one that looked the same as Zen Micro) but that recently broke. Actually, whilst on tour. That was a fucking bummer, because on tour 70% of your day is fucking boring.

I want one of those new ones that someone posted a picture of. 32GB if I can afford it. Though my computer's got numerous problems with it so it's not liking new hardware at the moment.

I have a Video/Photo iPod. I much prefer the generation of iPod before this one, simply because it moves much faster, and the actual player is the perfect thickness to fit in my hands and successfully use the scroll wheel without it stopping when my finger slips off a little bit. However, I was basically forced to upgrade considering my music collection started reaching past the 25gb amount. But anyway, since I have iTunes and have gotten used to the iPods functionality, it just makes more sense for me to use this iPod I have now. I really don't feel like fiddling with my media player of choice and and seeking all of the proper compatibility for it. The Video iPod works fine enough that I don't ever feel like throwing it out of a window, or throwing it at somebody I don't like, but I really do think this generation of iPod truly was style over substance and functionality.

I'm sorry Apple, we all don't have petite girl fingers.
