A few songs from them that come across as metal to me:

Cities on Flame

Hotrails to Hell

Black Blade

Godzilla

The Great Sun Jester

The Vigil

Lips in the Hills

Heavy Metal/ The Pact

Dominance and Submission

7 Screaming Dizbusters

I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep

Joan Crawford

Don't Fear the Reaper

Fallen Angel

Divine Wind

These are over the course of 13 albums, mind you, which isn't really a splendid ratio in metallic circles. The same can probably be said about AC/DC, Queen, and a few other bands, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. And yeah, Don't Fear the Reaper, with the exception of its unexpectedly electrified solo, really doesn't belong.

I might note, however, that rules stipulate a band release at least one "metal" album, and I feel, at least, that Tyrrany and Mutation ought to count. Damn heavy, and Far less rock/pop vibe than some of their later work, but that's my 2 cents.

That one metal album should be Tyranny and Mutation. If Def Leppard can be included with their little first "metal" album debut, then BOC should get in on the grounds of the album I just mentioned IMHO.

No, This Ain't The Summer of Love sounds more metal than 2112. But then, there's Jacobs Ladder, which's got some monster riffs too. I think Rush are here because of their influence on progressive metal which is not quite a good enough reason for me, because then hard rock bands which influenced metal should be here too. But as somebody else said, it's not upto me why Rush is here and BOC is not.

Psh, The Beatles - I Want You is heavier than Summer of Love.

It really is.

If you say so. Obviously, I don't agree but heaviness can't be proved anyway, so it's not up for debate.

I'd definitely say that the best description of Blue Oyster Cult is 'proto-metal'. They influenced metal, they seem to be metal in places, but ultimately belong to that group of bands that influenced the genre without explicitly being it.

Also, The Kinks - You Really Got Me or All Day And All Of The Night have some fairly metally riffs.

I apologize for resurrecting this topic, but since I'm a fan of BOC, I thought I'd put in my opinion.
I think BOC is Metal enough to be considered a Metal band. By "enough", of course, I mean just barely enough. Besides Metal, they also did a lot of Prog, Psychedelic, Pop, etc.
I could go through their albums and note what's metal and what isn't, but that would take a while and wouldn't change the fact that they crossed multiple genres. Though, I will say that say seemed to be part of the Metal 'scene', first doing early Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, moving on to Glam-ish stuff in the '80s, and-if you listen to their more recent ones- seemingly taking influence from Thrash.

Blue Oyster Cult were my first concert ever :headbang:

Also, my only concert that hasn't been a metal concert.

Yeah. I always thought "See You In Black" sounded somewhat Thrash-influenced.

After Rush, BOC is probably my favorite non metal band (closely followed by Thin Lizzy). Their songs are just badass. A lot of their riffs are so creative and catchy. Tyranny and Mutation was probably my favorite album though.

I don't think they're a metal band, but that doesn't stop them from being awesome.

I've always been a BOC fan, ever since I first heard "Don't Fear The Reaper" back in 1976.

Of course we can't forget the recording of that classic- it needed PLENTY of this; http://www.funnyhub.com/videos/pages/sn ... wbell.html
