When you're older, (if you arent already) what do you want to do with your life? Currently, I'm 15 and want to be a music teacher when I'm older, (but apperently I need a 90 in math to do that, anyway...)

What do you want to settle on as a career? If you have one, I'd love to hear about how you decided on that job and how you're enjoying it, if it's not too invasive ;-).

What classes are you taking, and how are you enjoying them?

Huh? How so? I used to study classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and as far as I know all you need to be allowed to teach basic classical piano is your grade 8 and level 2 theory. That will allow you to teach the lower grades, and as you progress in your lessons and theory courses you'll eventually be able to teach higher grades. Where did you hear you need a high math grade to teach music?

Anyways, not entirely sure what I'm going to end up doing. Right now the plan is to complete my phd then become a professor, but we'll see after I'm done. I'm not really that interested in teaching, university students seem increasingly immature and unconcerned with learning and I don't really have the patience to deal with idiot first years. All I really want to do is my own research so I'll probably be looking into other options.

Why on Earth would you need a 90 in math to be a music teacher? Maths and music are linked, no doubt, but 90?!

I wanted to be a pro wrestler but because of my knees I can't :( , I really don't know what to do with my life, as I'm not really interested in doing anything else (maybe I could become a ref or manager or something). Though saying that, I would still need a day job to support myself (Indy wrestling doesn't pay much).

Well, as I said in my first post, I'm 15. Both my parents are teachers, and, even though I get 90's in EVERYTHING else, my parents say that If I dont do well in Math, and I quote, "Your life wont amount to anything"

Of course they know I want to be a music teacher, and... their opinions haven't changed, but I have started trying harder in math, but it's not doing much for me... anyway... that's a rant for another time.

Bullshit.

I want to write novels and perhaps work for a newspaper or teach or something. I'll figure it out soon.

Seriously. Unless you plan on being some sort of engineer you can get away with knowing basic math for the rest of your life and even then you're gonna probably have a calculator on you (cellphone or whatever). There isn't some guy at a tollbooth every morning on your way to work that will only let you pass if you figure out the hypotenuse.

To contribute:

I'm working at a recording studio right now and am having a fantastic time. Money is scarce and I figure that's just always how it's gonna be (given the way the business is and how it's evolving) but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I love setting up a session, fixing gear when it's not working, soldering cables, and generally seeing a song form from nothing.

I'd love to do that for the rest of my life :)

I can't imagine how music teachers would be required to have such high level of skill of mathematics. Certainly, overall success in school is useful (so you can basically choose your place of further education), but maybe you can convince your parents that, while it's important, you don't have to be perfect at everything, especially since it doesn't even concern your dream career.

Maths is important, and often overlooked, but you really have to draw the line somewhere. But then, it doesn't matter because, if everything goes right, and I hope it will, you'll have your career regardless of whether you get a 90 or not.

Personally, my dream is to make a relatively easy living out of playing in a band, but I probably never will, or even at best, I'll make the choice of not doing so. I want a job where I can write texts using creativity and the English language, at least from time to time. I can't imagine what that job would be, but I'm still 17, so there's no hurry.

I'm finishing my thesis for the University and I hope to find something related to the languages because I study English, French and Portuguese...anyway, I want also to continue in writing reviews for sites as hobby too, like doing bodybuilding.

Alright, thanks for the replies, but enough on the math mark, the thread isnt about me.

Although, what I didnt put in my original post is that my "Dream Job" is to be in a band, but I'm trying to be realistic. If you put your dream job in a post, make sure to put in your back up plan.

Seriously, you're being brainwashed. You only need to know fractions for music (time sigs). Most of the stuff in grade 9 math you will probably never even use ever. I've learned integrations and they're strictly for higher end math/physics/engineering.

Plus a 90% in math? Your parents want to just to be the elite, thats all. I got a 90% in all my math courses, but I loved it and just got it... and I really doubt one can get that mark if you don't love it w/ your life.
You just need good math marks to enter university/teachers college/whatever, but DEAR GOD NOT 90%, an 80% would be sufficient.

Strongly considering journalism at the moment. Basically anything that involves writing, if the aforementioned math skill is an indicator of how good my life will be, I'll probably end up as a crack-addled hobo.

For the first part, I completely agree. I'm fine at math, but it's not like your going to use some crazy shit and formulas and equations or whatever in daily work unless your planning on being something that involves quite a bit of math.

As for the second part...

My goal is to become a Clinical Psychologist. I've just finished my third year in University, and in a few days, will find out if I have been accepted into Honours in Psychology for next year. Depending on how next year goes, I may seek to persevere and go through to Masters or even PhD, or to find full time employment in some other related field (probably with the government). I would love to keep on studying, but after fifteen straight years of study, I'm starting to feel as if I'm running out of steam, not to mention passion (for academics). I suppose time will tell.

My dream job is to be able to make a living out of being in a band, my back-up plan is to be a writer of some kind, preferably an author, but I'd love to be a journalist or something too...

Yeah, I have high hopes, failing all that I'll just stack shelves in Tesco and be in a band in my spare time :)

Some type of Law Enforcement. Right now my goal is the DEA but I am considering other agencies as well.

Also still tossing around the idea of the military before I get into LE, I highly doubt I would make a career out of that however. Just 4 year enlistment or something along those lines.

I'm going to necromasturbate my phallic goathammer in the face of virgin Mary and burn churches while screaming necrublasphemous summonings to the northern coldness in the glory of Satan.

Seriously though, it looks as if I'm gonna study biochemistry. Maybe I'll be a scientist or a teacher. Hopefully a scientist, or a combination of the two if I get to work at a univesity or something.

I wouldnt say brainwashed, I know It's not true, but... Yeah, especially in Academic Math, it's really hard. Anyway, talk about something else.

EDIT: It might also be that the 'rents are just dissapointed in me, in grade 1-8 I always got A's in math, and last year I got a high 80, but this year, it's just so hard, that, and my teacher can't teach. Oh well, seriously, leave the math alone though

I had a dream the other night that some metalhead considered himself a ladies man purely based on his musical tastes. He said, "Hey baby, this is Quorthon's feces I am wearing. Wanna fuck?"

I'm a freshman in college, and I'm majoring in radio/audio, which is a branch of electronic media and film. I suppose something related to that would be my ideal job. Really it's just anything related to music.

Second year of university this year and pretty sure I want to be a professor at a university one day, teaching within the field of computer science, probably focusing on robotics. It seems like the best system thus far--I can teach, I can conduct research, and I'd be able to arrange my life so that I can have a family and enough free time to keep from going crazy. So far, I don't think I'm interested in working in the industry, unless it was somewhere completely drool-worthy like Google. A friend of mine graduated in 07 and now works there, lucky bastard.

Im in the middle of my second. I recently switched from Surgical Technician, to a major somewhere in culinary arts. I haven't figured out what exactly I want to do with cooking, but I figure I should get an associates with being a chef, and work my way up to whatever I want to do with it.

Im actually pretty excited on this sudden change of pace especially since I would really love how to cook. :)

I could probably be a teacher. My preferred subjects are science, math, or latin. Those may be my three favorite subjects.

Sure, it is me telling you guys, yeah, that is if you ignore the fact that I ask you all where you see yourselves in ten years as well.

Seeing yourself in ten years is not the same as asking what you want to do in life. The former should be thought about realistically as opposed to idealistically, whereas the latter is purely fantasy that will hopefully become reality.

Acctually, I read your thread and made this one, just because a few people were saying things other than what they wanted to do as a career. I was more interested in jobs.

Sorry for any confusion. :D

That's nice, since your in this thread how about you tell us what you wanna be when you grow up?

Sure, it is me telling you guys, yeah, that is if you ignore the fact that I ask you all where you see yourselves in ten years as well.

Jesus, what is this, "Post in my thread", "No, post in my thread", either way it's the same information. You don't get prizes for starting successful threads, come down.

Anyway, I'm not too sure where I what want to do. Maybe something with psychology or sociology, but I really haven't thought about specifics. To the people already in college, should you know this stuff before you apply?

I want to work with animals because they fascinate me. Particularly in animal behavior..or something along those lines. Don't know enough info to decide upon.
