Not sure if this is FFA material, if it is sorry, but I felt this warranted it's own thread due to its relevance to metal:

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/st ... 17,00.html

Quote:
BANDS like AC/DC, Megadeath and Destroyer 666 may be driving a silent epidemic of neck and head injuries.

Why? Head-banging, violently whipping one's head - preferably adorned with long, wild locks - back and forth to the likes of Spinal Tap's Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight and Motley Crue's Kickstart My Heart, both hitting a hair-flicking head-swinging 180 beats a minute.

The faster the beat and the greater the range of motion, the higher the risk of of head and neck injuries, claim University of NSW biomechanics expert Andrew McIntosh and honours student Declan Patton.

"We identified a definite risk of mild traumatic brain injury from head-banging," said Associate Professor McIntosh of the results published this morning in the British Medical Journal's Christmas edition.

He quipped: "Learn to ballroom dance. That's the takeaway message."

In the report they also pointed to additional "preventative measures" like head-banging on alternate beats, switching to Celine Dion, Enya and Michael Bolton, wearing a neck brace and resisting the desire to bang one's head directly on the stage. The latter may cause unconsciousness.

According to Professor McIntosh, the pair were joking around when they decided to look into head-banging, using the same suite of techniques applied to serious projects such as assessing the effectiveness of helmets or the injury risk in contact sports like rugby union or boxing.

That meant doing a biomechanical analysis of the range of angular head velocities of head-banging; running a focus group with 10 band members, talent or musical training optional; and conducting observational studies of head-banging at concerts by bands ranging from Motorhead and Ozzy Osbourne to Winger and Ratt.

They then compared the results to the risk of head-banging to I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Lionel Ritchie's Hello and Babe by Styx.

To put the findings in context Professor McIntosh and Mr Patton also investigated the risk faced by legendary head-bangers Wayne and Garth when they banged to Bohemian Rhapsody in the film Wayne's World.

The risk was low at just 138 beats per minute with a low range of head motion.

Similarly, when Beavis and Butthead head-banged to I Wanna be Sedated - 164 beats per minute - Beavis kept his angular head velocity below the injury threshold. Butthead did not.

"It is well understood, however, that cartoon characters are able to tolerate greater than normal impacts without injury," they wrote in the BMJ.

Their paper follows a previous BMJ Christmas report calling for clinical trials of the effectiveness of parachutes, a whimsical piece on the importance of testing public health interventions.

Another bunch of silly conservatives kicking up a fuss over nothing. What do you all make of this?

Sounds plausible, but not enough to scare me. I don't headbang hard enough to give myself a headache anyway, just a sore neck the next day. I'll usually find some slower part of the beat to headbang to if the song is blasting away at Dark Angel speeds.

Utter nonsense. If you're doing it right, you won't get hurt. Stick to windmills--they look amazing with long hair and don't hurt nearly as much once you get your momentum under control.

You need a lot of room to windmill, clearly this won't work when you're taking a shit (where I do most of my headbanging).

Yup Megadeath may be bad for my neck.
But Megadeth is healthier.

It never hurts for me, but at the start I did get dizzy. You get used to it in a few weeks.

I find it really random how Destroyer 666 is thrown in along next to AC/DC, Motorhead, Motley Crue and Ratt...

Either way, I doubt this can be really worth anything unless you headbang in a way that will actually cause it. Learn to do it right and you're fine... I think it's safe to say if you go headbanging randomly and overly violently then you'll get what's coming, otherwise you'll be fine.

I think they're referencing the lyrics to Whiplash.

Hahaha, hilarious. Nice find. Attempting a Quickstep in the middle of a moshpit may however be slightly more damaging to one's health, not to mention the catastrophic loss of social status.

Quote:
They then compared the results to the risk of head-banging to I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, Lionel Ritchie's Hello and Babe by Styx.

That's just genius.

Could have been Bonded by Blood for that matter. Does say something about how seriously they treat their paper though.

AC/DC, Megadeth and...Destroyer 666? Three very different styles, one idiotic writer. For their next article..how metal bands like Blue Cheer, Satanic Warmaster and Dragonforce can summon the devil.

Yeah, I did find it kind of weird that he threw a band as obscure as D666 in next to the big names. Also, he got Megadeth wrong.

That would be an EPIC music video. Bolt Thrower or somebody blasting away on stage and a crowd full of Metalheads ballroom dancing.

An "epidemic" of neck and head injuries?
I'd say that's a huge exaggeration considering only small percentage of the population actually listens to metal, and not all of them headbang necessarily. Less still will be injured by it.

I'm not inclined to trust this on any level whatsoever. This is mostly because I've heard actual medical practitioners (who were not metalheads) claim that headbanging can not cause any lasting injuries to the head or the neck during any normal conditions.

Apparently, according to what I was told, it can specifically definitely not cause whiplash (which is the injury that most people believe that it can cause) since the forces involved are too small.

This is what I've heard several licensed doctors say anyway, so I choose to believe that this is just bullshit.

Well, both for the aforementioned reason and the fact that it seems to be 100% biased actually.

When it mentions fast headbanging, does it mean like the people in the background are doing in this video?

I don't do that anyway, as it looks slightly retarded.

It's only when your neck muscles hurt badly the day after a gig that you truly appreciate the weight of your head.

Obviously, you’ve never been to a Vader concert. Banging your head head directly on the stage seems like the logical thing to do at the time.

I'm pretty sure they are serious. Every day, this country is getting more and more namby-pamby, hell they've got scare campaign ads on TV at the moment telling us not to get fucking food poisoning over Xmas. So like I said, my money would actually be on this headbanging thing being serious... Bet you Kevin Rudd will ban headbanging before the first quarter of 2009, citing "child protection" as the reason behind it. :P

I can see the slogans now!

"Whiplash; you don't have to be in a car."

"Every thrash song is doing you damage."

"Wind milling; nobody thinks big of you."

"There's nothing metal about a bang over."

"Paralysis. It only takes one sweet riff."

I'd believe it. I had once come home from a Celtic Frost show so sore, I couldn't move my neck at all. I suppose raising your fist leads to you shoulder damage as well?
