Oh hell yeaah! The world’s all-time greatest dynasty in any sport at any level continues, as my alma mater Carleton Ravens win the McGee Trophy - for Canadian University men’s basketball championship - for the 15th time in the last 18 years!!

Not sure how many here will care, but the XFL has thrown in the towel, laying off all employees and suspending all operations with no plans for a season in 2021.

https://www.espn.com/xfl/story/_/id/290 ... eturn-2021

Regardless of the league's premature end due to the pandemic, whodathunk that the new XFL would actually be even more of a failure than the original XFL?

That’s sad. The XFL had some cool innovations, and the quality of play seemed to be picking up week to week.

Colby Cave of the Edmonton Oilers passed away this morning. He had been in the hospital all week due to a brain bleed. Really sad stuff. He was only 25.

As far as the XFL is concerned, I can't really justify calling it a failure. It was simply the most poorly timed inaugural season of all time.

I had been following his progress since he was placed in an MIC, and now seeing this...absolutely terrible news. That kid showed a lot of promise and seemed to be a joy amongst his teammates. I hope his family and friends can find solace.

German handball leagues were cancelled. Men's handball league was set as finished and the current leaders of the league table were named champions. Women's handball league was set as annulled and the current leaders of the league table have won nothing. In other news the head of the German handball association will be sleeping on the couch the next few years.

I guess Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are strong believers in "We're taking our guy, and we don't give a fuck where others have him rated." Not sure I'm a fan.

What do the American football fans here think of Gronkowski shipping off to Tampa to play with Brady again? I personally have no real dog in the fight since I don't watch football, but as a native New Englander it's been pretty hilarious seeing diehard Patriots freaks go apeshit over this and Brady leaving.

Just to add to the gigantic shitshow that has been UFC 249, prelim fighter Jacare Souza and two of his cornermen tested positive for Covid and got pulled from the card. UFC is still gonna do the show, however.

Three Canadian sports leagues have sought financial assistance from the government: the upstarts Premier League (soccer) and Elite Basketball League; and even the long-established Canadian Football League. Of the three, the CFL is talking the most doom-n-gloom, while the CEBL is phrasing it like a short-term loan they expect to recover from, and the CPL have been pretty quiet about the request.
Still, when you add in the Stags, who are supposed to join the transatlantic Rugby League One, Ottawa could lose four sports teams - three of them before they ever take the field.

So I was watching auto racing tonight because, well, it's a sport (sort of anyway) and because it happened to be "what was on."

You had a guy leading the race with two laps to the finish when a caution comes out. Instead of cruising to an easy win, he goes to pit road for fresh tires, and basically takes himself out of the race and hands the victory to fucking Jerk Keslowski on a silver platter.

WHY Chase Elliot, WHY???
Stupid, stupid, stupid decision. He just cost himself the race! That would be like in baseball, intentionally walking in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning- that's how dumb that was.

So there will be no CFL football in 2020. http://www.netnewsledger.com/2020/08/17 ... ll-season/
The one time our otherwise profligate government chooses to be fiscally responsible, it’s to deny a measly $30 million loan to the Canadian Football League. Bastards.

^ Well said! Atletico had a fantastic debut season for a team scrabbled together from scratch in under six months. Even finishing 7th of 8 looks worse than it is, as a win in the last game would have put Ottawa 4th and in the playoffs. I am very much looking forward to a real season coming up!

Blue Jays whup the Yankees 18-2 over the last two games combined, to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2016. This young core is miles ahead of where a “rebuilding” team should be!

And the first game postponement of the NFL season due to Covid has happened. The Patriots vs. Chiefs game on Sunday has been delayed due to people on both teams testing positive, including Cam Newton.

This is my EXTREMELY SURPRISED BY THIS face.

Senators trade one of their four(!) second round 2020 draft picks, plus Jonathan Gruden, to Pittsburgh - for Matt friggin’ Murray * Given that Murray has only the 2020-21 season left on his contract, this can only mean that Ottawa is gearing up for a playoff run right away!

*was looking for an emoji that says “whoa, this is big news!” but the eek was the closest. This is great imo. I was disappointed at the ignominious way the Sens quietly dumped all-time great Craig Anderson; but now, Murray is a fantastic replacement. He’s a 26-year-old whose career (minus a blob this past season) has ranged from good to excellent and may still improve - goalies are still considered “developing” into their mid-20s.

There's a pretty substantial "if he stays healthy," caveat with Murray.

Hey! Don’t go raining on my parade! It’s playoffs or bust for the Sens :)
Seriously though, Murray’s injury history has been so heavy on freak occurrences - getting hurt in warmup etc - that I gotta think that luck can’t continue.

I feel pretty okay about a game 5 with Cole on the mound, even on short rest. Obviously Glasnow isn't going deep on 2 days rest. Tampa has the much stronger bullpen, so I'm guessing the Yankees need Cole to at least go into the sixth for a chance to win. 5.1, 5.2 and hand the ball directly to Green (if he's available after the last 2 games. If not, I guess they will gamble with Otto? They sure are missing Tommy Kahnle here.). Britton and Chapman didn't throw enough pitches yesterday to take them out of the mix.

I'm guessing if Cole doesn't give them length, but the game is close or tied, they may gamble on the young gun Garcia. This is going to be tense.

That game 5 was a classic. I really thought the Yankees would take it when Chapman came out, since he has so much more big game experience than Diego Castillo... Also I’ve jumped on the Anybody But Houston train, and would have given NY better odds to beat the Astros.

It was a great, great game. I am starting to get the feeling that Chapman can't win the big game (he gave up the lead in the legendary Game 7 for the cubs, gave up the walk-off last year to Altuve, the homerun this year). But, if you sign up for Cole giving up one solo shot, and chapman giving up one solo shot and THAT'S IT, I bet 9/10 times you win that game. Can hardly blame it on the pitching/bullpen when you only score 1 run.

Even as a die-hard Yankee fan, Mike brosseau endeared himself to me last night. His post-game interview was PURE class (even if he was clearly lying. Of COURSE he was thinking about that 101 mph fastball near his head earlier this year). He took the high road and let his performance do the talking, and let the emotion out with his teammates, not showing anyone up. Total pro in my books.

I'm starting to think my Raiders may be good again. 3-2 doesn't look incredibly impressive, but the schedule so far has been murderously hard. Their 3 wins have come against the Saints, the Chiefs IN Kansas City and a Panthers team that is looking solid. If they can get to the back half of the schedule (Which features teams like the Falcons, Jets, Broncos and Dolphins) over .500, there's no reason they shouldn't make the playoffs.

The Tampa Bay Rays are currently just one win away from the AL pennant. I realize that they have to get there first but, realistically, the Rays could be up to 14 days (or as short as 10 days) from a World Series victory. If this does happen, it will be up to (but possibly earlier than) a month after the Lightning won the Stanley Cup.

No American football QB has ever even represented, let alone won, the NFL Championship in both conferences. Only two QB's in history have won an NFL Championship with two different teams. Only one QB has ever even made it to the SB as a starter with his new team in the first year, Trent Dilfer when he not only left Tampa and won the following SB with Baltimore but did so IN Raymond James Stadium. Finally, no NFL team has ever reached the Superbowl in the same year that the game was being hosted in their building.

Tom Brady in Tampa has a chance to become the 3rd QB to even get, let alone win, a SB with two different teams. Would be the first to even get, let alone win, a SB with both conferences. Would also be the first QB to play in the SB in his teams own building.

After hosting Wrestlemania 36 the city of Tampa could have three sports titles in the same year/season.

Would have been crazy if the Heat had won, as well. I Know it's in Miami, but you have to imagine there are a lot of Miami Heat fans in the Tampa region (even though, geographically speaking, Orlando is closer)

The playoff race for the #7 seed is going to be very interesting the AFC. As of now, you have 3 teams in the North that all look like contenders, 2 in the East, 2 in the West, and 2 in the South. Even the Dolphins are somehow looking like a real team this year. I think the Colts are probably going to plummet at some point, so it is likely that the Browns, Steelers, Patriots, and Raiders will be fighting for those 3 wild card spots. Those are going to be some tough teams to edge out this year, but I agree that Las Vegas has been playing very well as of late, and that win in Kansas City has got to be a giant morale booster going forward.

Separately, I'm not a Chargers fan, but watching that team is infuriating. Herbert has been playing really well, however people are going to get hung up on his 0-4 record as a starter, because his team is experimenting in how many different ways you can lose a football game. Is there any other team in recent history that has had as much talent as LAC, but just can't seem to get out of their own way?

At this point I think the Steelers are absolute frauds. They've basically faced the dregs of the NFL, and they still haven't looked overly impressive doing it.

I was about to say the same about the Titans  How these dinks managed to be 5-0 before today... well, Pittsburgh and Tennessee are both paper tigers. That game was a festival of goofery.

Ah, I've missed these "Derek Carr has no help" games. Backups at LG and RG, third string RT. Starting offensive line wasn't allowed to practice ALL WEEK. No defense, no running game, and Nelson Agholor reminds us why the Eagles let him go.

Seahawks, why must every single game be heart attack-worthy. Amazing game with the Cardinals tonight but they should have won that. Way too many mistakes by Russell and the defense proves once again they belong at the bottom with the Cowboys when it comes to putting up a fight (regardless of once a game clutch moments).

Yeah, it's super frustrating. Like, if your QB doesn't play like a literal god, it's gonna be a loss, because the defense is simply incapable of contributing anything positive. The Raiders are the same way, but they're not lucky enough to have Russell Fucking Wilson haha.

Week after week, I am saying to myself these Steelers are the worst unbeaten team ever... But at 10-0, I am approaching the point where I have to reluctantly admit they’re for real.

I don't like the Steelers, so I'm hoping either of those teams knock them off. I can't say I'm a bandwagon Cheifs fan either- I never paid any attention to them and I'm not about to start, though obviously you can't deny they are a great team.

Right now I’m thinking the Chiefs will repeat, unless they happen to meet Oakland in the playoffs.

I do not know if anyone saw it but last weekend Formula 1 witnessed one of the most dangerous accidents of all time.

Here is the video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7_En2xEm4&ab_channel=FORMULA1

Romain Grosjean escaped after a crash at ~140 mph and sustained burns in his arms.

If it wasn't for the Halo safety tech that was introduced in 2018 he would be dead now...

My God motorsport is dangerous.

And... the Steelers’ first loss is to the Washington No-Names. :ah-ha: In such a weird season, I giess it has to be something like that to end the streak.
Eventually Pittsburgh’s allergy to running the ball was going to bite them in the ass, especially with the ridiculous number of dumb-easy catches the receivers have dropped the last several weeks.
