Satriani has a right to feel ripped off, however: Satriani is shit, albeit not as much as Coldplay.

Just thought someone had to state the obvious.

Makes me wonder why no one has gone afyer Trivium yet, seeing as how everyone claims they've ripped off so many riffs.

As much as I'd like to see this happen, I doubt Coldplay intended to rip off Satriani. If they wanted to rip off somebody, they would have looked towards a completely obscure, unknown artist, and Satriani is one of the world's most well-known guitar solo artists, so they would have known that they were venturing into dangerous waters if they did indeed intentionally rip him off.

While I don't think Satriani is super well known, I do think he is probably fairly obscure to the average Coldplay fan.

AC/DC is probably underground and obscure to a Coldplay fan.

You don't need to be a Coldplay fan to notice the ripoff.

Meh. It's not as blatant as Nirvana's riffs stealage.

Especially considering Lars Ulrich. Trivium clearly ripped off the riff from some Black Album song (I think it was Through The Never) in one of their songs.

why?

Satriani has amazing guitar work without the boring of Yngwie Malmsteen or the pretension of Dream Theater. He is a unique and influential guitar player.

I'll take Coldplay's first album over anything Satriani ever put out...

That proves you suck. Badly.

Surfing With the Alien is absolutely awesome, and anyone who fails to see that needs to try it out again, because it's really a fantastic album.

Nah, I like a bit of guitar wank here and there. Jason Becker, Tommy Emmanuel. it's just that Satriani has a tendency to wank 'till his dick is raw, also, he has a really shitty tone. You'd think being a solo guitarist dude would mean that he would've worked out a sweet guitar tone, instead it's this shrill, cats-in-a-blender type thing.

That is so blasphemous. Satriani = one of the most influential guitarists of all time. TONS of guitar players rip off his legato sound, often times stealing a lot of his phrasing. This happens a LOT in Prog bands too. I hear it far too often. Not only that, but a lot of Bay Area thrash guitarists took a lot from his lead playing as well.

What the FUCK happened to people around here?

And Caspian, what the fuck? Jason Becker is great, but he FACTUALLY wanks more than Satriani does. Satch's tone is great. How much Satriani have you heard?

My point was that they probably don't have a lot of overlap listeners, therefore making it unlikely for anyone to notice the stealage....

I personally, think Satch has an amazing tone. It's very recognizable, and sounds spacey and beautiful. Then again, that's just my opinion...

Why is Coldplay's version so popular anyways? It's the same damn song as Satriani except worse. Satriani should be getting the profits from this, not Coldplay.

Why do you need to ask? It's radio-friendly sensitive-guy music. The pop-listening crowd will eat it right up.

It's not the same damn song, it just has a similar bit. It's shit, yes, and it's quite probably ripped off, but it's far from the same song.

The chord progression for one thing might be a blatant rip-off or it might be a coincidence, but the vocal/lead guitar melody is just too much ... I hope Satriani wins this, and that has nothing to do with my Coldplay-hate.

But my point is that Satriani wrote pretty much the same thing before they did. Is it just because of Coldplay's pop culturish image that makes people go out and buy it? I think a lot of people just care about lyrics or something. I honestly don't know.

Keep in mind that Coldplay had already reached popularity through their former limp-dicked soft pop endeavours before they ripped off the song.

Alright, alright. That one album I can enjoy a bit. The rest of it just has absolutely no fucking feeling to it. Yeah, he's influential, blah blah blah but he's no fun to listen to.

I find Coldplay's first album to be decent enough. Maybe it's just nostalgia but I actually find it enjoyable to listen to. I hadn't really listened to them in years other than their crappy newer stuff that's pretty ubiquitous but the other day I heard Yellow again and it really made me get back into their first album.

I really like Satriani's tone. More so than stuff from people like Petrucci, Vai, Malmsteen, and even my favorite guitarist, Friedman.

Well Malmsteen's tone is awful, so that's not saying much. Can't say Friedman's is great but it's not bad either, really. My personal favorite is Kiko Loureiro's.
