I've been there a few times and am not a fan. Is there ANY other places besides that Sokol craphole that have underground shows? What do you all think of the center state?

I lived there for 18 years. Sokol is pretty much the only place you'll get metal concerts or even scene concerts like Bring Me The Horizon. Nu-metal comes to the state a fair amount, but that's cause Nu-metal came out of the Midwest. You'll get Disturbed and Linkin Park at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln occasionally, Mudvayne or Ill Nino at some of the smaller bar venues. Outside of that, there isn't a venue in the state that plays metal outside the eastern portion of the state. Granted, when I lived there I was all into Nu-metal so I didn't have a problem. Still am into the big acts.

There's a reason I left Nebraska for Wisconsin when I went to college. There's nothing in Nebraska. Absolutely nothing. Any chance you have to leave the state, you're probably going to end up somewhere better. It's a lifeless state that people get raised up in, think is "good enough" so they stay, have kids, then die there. It's an endless cycle that you can only stop by getting the hell out. Take my advice. First chance you have to live somewhere else, do it.

I lived in Lincoln for a few years going to UNL. It is counted as the biggest mistake of my entire life, hands down. Shitty town, backwards ignorant people, no culture. All personal pride wrapped up in the Cornhuskers, who aren't even that good. Entire towns employed at the local Walmart. Omaha called a "city" with a straight face. Population waxes and wanes strictly according to tornado size & frequency. First kid generally at age 16.

Used to be a place called Peony Park where I saw Concrete Blonde once. And of course Matthew Sweet is from Lincoln, while 311 is from Omaha.

My ladyfriend went there for a medical internship at Lincoln University... all she remembers is how they talked about their corn. My oh my, how interesting...

I stopped in nebraska once on my way to Colorado. It was a wendy's. Everyone stared at me. Jesus Messiah was playing on the radio. I got horribly sick (from a salad, no less).

suffice to say, fuck nebraska and everyone in it

Definitely a fucking lame place. I can't believe destruction played there 2 years ago either. I heard they said they'd be back from a friend who was there, but there was a VERY poor attendance at that show, so I guess the stupid nebraskans blew any chance of them coming around again.

Well fuck you too.

That said, Nebraska blows. And we don't talk about corn that much, but I live on the western side, so I don't know much about the eastern people.

There are some hicks, rednecks, and Nascar fans.

I live 3 miles from the wonderful Carhenge. It's fun to go out there at night (when it's warm) and smoke pot.

Now that I think about it, all Nebraska really has to do is smoke pot. And drink.

Everything west of the Missippi River and east of Denver for the most part is a desolate land filled with nothing that no one should live in, unless you regard civilization as a non-essential part of your life.

So, yes, Kansas is just as bad as Nebraska from what I know. Everyone from my high school who is still in the area from all I can tell work five days a week, drink on the weekend, and then do it again the next week, till they die.

What I really hate are the people that I KNOW could do amazing things outside of the state but just sit in it and accept their fate. I don't care what randomness they talk about, or how much they hate Mexican's for taking their jobs, but the stupid amount of complacency and acceptance with the horrible situation they're in and how 90% do nothing about it.

Not Nebraska. Some place where you can actually have an opinion and not just get awkward looks and be ignored if it's not in the majority. Where the people actually move around and realize and do things about their problems not just drink them away or just live with them and do nothing about making themselves actually happy. A place where you have opportunities where you live and not none outside of the work force.

The west of the Missippi east of Denver thing is probably an exaggeration. I haven't lived in KC or some of the Texan cities, but for some reason I don't think it'd be much different. It's still part of the more rural Mid-west. But I had to deal with Nebraska for 18 years so, I may be slightly bias...

Madison was like heaven compared to Lincoln. I can only imagine how much better off I'd be in Europe or just moving around the world in general.

Not sure if you're a fan of the place or not, but I can't stand it. I didn't have an amazing first 18 years there and for me it just isn't a place I can stand being in for a long period of time.

It's disheartening when I have a graduate student from Seoul in the lab I work at who went to UNL for two years, his first in the States, and felt like an outcast beyond rationale comprehension. Completely new to the place and all the sentiments on this thread he told me right off the bat from being there for two years. He came to Madison and felt like he was back in Seoul comparable, much more comfortable, liked the people more, etc.. Obviously Madison is much more like Seoul in population, but when he says the only thing that anyone wanted to do was watch football games, drink, and repeat and that was before I even said anything about it it's pretty sad.

If anyone is happy there, congratulations, you've done what I couldn't do. Honestly, it doesn't matter where you are, as long as you're happy. I just don't understand how some people can do it is all. Nebraska just isn't my vision of utopia. I know plenty of people who have similar sentiments for Madison, though. It is a huge party town, it reeks of every college town cliche imaginable. To each his own I guess.

As for being surrounded by mediocrity. I hate it =) Surround yourself with mediocrity and that's what you'll become. Mediocre. Surround yourself with the elite and you'll learn from them and that's what you'll become. Elite.

Exactly. I have no idea either how anyone can be comfortable watching football and boozing it up all weekend long, right after a mind-numbing and dull five days of working in a factory with nothing to look forward to afterward except waking up on monday to start it all over again.
The narrow-mindedness is really annoying alone. I have a friend there who was literally HATED by his girlfriend's parents because he was a metal head. But all the other "fresh faced", budlight swilling douchebags she dated before and after were OK with them...assholes. Nebraska blows.

I live in Minnesota, one of Nebraska's superiors. All Nebraska has to do to be as bitchin' as Minnesota is have professional sports teams.

Seriously, though, my experience with Nebraska is fairly limited. I fail to see how it's much different from Iowa or South Dakota. I have relatives there.

I lol'd so hard I almost ruined a computer monitor.

As for SD/Iowa, they're exactly the same as Nebraska, they're in the dead zone. At least if you're from Iowa you can say you spawned Slipknot. Well, that's an Iowa plus for me I guess...

I live in Nebraska and have all my life. Yes there are some ignorant people here, but they are also generally good, decent, hard-working people. It's not so bad. The Cornhuskers are obviously the big draw, and while they are past their heyday, they're not terrible. Unfortunately there is just no market for a professional team, although the College World Series is held here every year. I work as a lawyer in a small town in the center of the state, and there are a bunch of low class idiots who do nothing in their free time except drink, but there are also a lot of honest, hard-working people as well.

As for metal, there really is not much of a scene. Lincoln used to have a couple of places that would have shows, and still do I think. Wolves in the Throne Room was in Lincoln a few weeks back. Omaha is basically the place to go for metal. Other than that, we're typically about five years behind the trends. Nu metal just recently started to die out and metalcore is picking up steam in Omaha.

I've lived in Omaha for nearly two decades and I can safely say that's it's nothing like you guys have described it. I don't live by any drunken nascar fans, and i've rarely encountered any white trash people. It's not NEARLY as bad as people think it is. And you'll find ignorant people wherever you go, so why does it matter?
