Depending on the generation of iPod you have it would help to access the Diagnostics menu. To do this on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens you'll need to hold down the menu and play buttons simultaneously. Wait about 5-8 seconds.
After the iPod shuts down, it should turn back on almost immediately. Once you see the Apple logo appear on the display, hold down the Forward, Back and Select buttons simultaneously until the backwards Apple logo appears. The third-generation iPod makes an audible chirp when you access the diagnostic menu.
Now to do this on a 4th, 5th, nano, mini or photo you'll need to do the whole menu/play reset again waiting 5-8 seconds. After the iPod shuts down, it should turn back on almost immediately. Once you see
the Apple logo on the LCD, hold down the Back and Select buttons simultaneously until the backwards Apple logo appears. You should also hear an audible chirp.
The next screen asks you to press Play to continue. Press the Play button. You can now select options from the diagnostic menu. If you have an iPod video, press the Menu button to run the tests manually, or press the Previous button to auto-test the iPod. To see the diagnostic menu, press Menu.
Diagnostic choices:
5 In 1: Performs multiple tests, including memory, backlight, and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports
Reset: Resets the iPod
Key: Checks the keys on the Click Wheel; press a key, and the iPod tells you whether your keypress registered
Chgr Curr: Uncertain, but it appears to turn the charging methods on and off
Remote: Tests the functionality of the remote control; be sure to plug in the remote before running this test
Hp Status: Checks the state of the hold switch and tells you if there is anything plugged into the audio jack
Sleep: Puts the iPod to sleep
Batt A2D: Checks the iPod’s power supply
Firewire: Checks the FireWire chip
HDD R/W: Checks that the hard drive can read and write; returns HDD Pass if it can
Smrt Dat: Performs another hard drive test
HDD Scan: Scans the hard drive; returns HDD Pass or HDD Fail, depending on the results of the scan. (A fail in this means your hard drive is screwed. You can replace them though.)
Read SN: Reads the iPod’s serial number
Diskmode: Puts the iPod into Disk Mode
Wheel: Returns different values when you run your thumb around the Click Wheel
Contrast: Checks the contrast of the LCD
Audio: Displays the audio gain
Status: Tells you if you have anything plugged into your iPod
Drv Temp: Displays the temperature of the hard drive
Iram Test: Test the iPod’s flash memory
Depending on what you get there's many options to fix the iPod yourself. And since it's no longer under warranty you don't have to worry about voiding it. If you have any problems you can PM me. My co-worker has rebuilt a couple of iPod's and will be able to give some info.
