Ive got a big problem with my Phillips mp3 player. I put it in my pocket going outside to walk my dog when its -15 degrees Celsius. Outside it didnt work well, failed to recognize some songs. Then in school, it recognized even fewer songs, and eventually whenever I turn it on, the Phillips opening screen loads and stays like that for forever, even after 30 minutes it doesnt load. Are mp3 players afraid of the cold? :D

It shouldn't have anything to do w/ the cold. Electronics are extremely sensitive to heat, so colder temps are actually better for them. I only have an iPod so your best bet would be searching the web.

Type in the make and model/gen of the player and then adding diagnose to the end. You should get some hits. I know the iPod has a diagnostics menu, but not sure for other players.

Like I said though, temp shouldn't affect your player. When you go to turn it on it might seem sluggish at first in colder temps, but it should work fine after it warms up.

Cold temperatures usually only affect the battery, there's probably other problems with your mp3 player. I'm not sure about the quality of the philips mp3s, my brother has one and it locks up every now and then requiring a reset, which then takes like 5mins to boot up.

Yeah see if theres a way to reset the thing, then re-put all your music back on it. If its still not working its fucked pretty much. Get it replaced/fixed after that. Also, cold is nothing for electronics.

Can you remove the battery? It usually helps when you take out the battery and count to ten, if not...dont take my advice.

Electronics can and are affected by cold tempuratures. Most items are designed to operate within a range of temps. Anything above or below may cause a malfunction.

Another, more likely possibility is thermal shock, where a device goes from a very cold environment to a very hot one (or vice versa). This can cause circuit boards crack, or sodors to break.

If a new battery doesn't work, find ou if the device is still under warranty. The manufacture won't replace the music files, but if they honor the warranty, and least you can get the hardware replaced.

My mp3 player recently broke. Every time I turn it on it says "WAIT.." This goes on 4 about 2-3 hours, then it shuts off. I bought a new one and was amazed how much cheaper they are. My old one was a 2gb basic mp3 player, paid about $100. New one I god today has radio, plays videos, and holds 8gb. Cost $30 less than my old one.

True, but the range for consumer products often go down to -55 C. As you say, a thermal shock or fabrication error is more likely to give these symptoms.

There's guarantee, and now, I have no idea about the consumer legislation in Lithuania, but perhaps you have the alternative known as 'reklamation' in Sweden and Germany. Here basically, one buys goods or services and (reasonably) expects them to last. If it breaks during a three years period one has the right compensation, repair or replacement. But oh so many shops disregard this, claiming that the guarantee is over, until one gets a real pain in the ass.
