Just thought it would be fun to hear what other metal fans listen to and secretly enjoy when you don't have some headbanging, ear splitting metal on the stereo?

I will start by embarrass myself first and say that my secret music passion is Kelly Clarkson.
Why Kelly Clarkson, it is because her lyrics are quite mean spirited at times and she can rock out at time.

Oh, by the way I will feel bad if no one had flamed me to hell and called me pussy for liking Kelly Clarkson within the first 3 replies. :-)

Try not to say things like "I hope I don't get flamed." It's lame and shows insecurity.

Also, any metalhead who is ashamed of liking some other form of music is just being ridiculous. Only pussies are ashamed or embarrassed of their music!

I enjoy some modern Rock on occasion and some pop punk if I want some catchy music.
And I can't say anything about Kelly Clarkson because I have "Since U Been Gone" on my itunes. :P

Well I did listen to a bit of Eminem once in a while... :uh oh:

Though I haven't touched his music for months now.

EDIT: Oh, and Lazytown is awesome. Especially that "Cooking by the Book" song.

You fucking pussy, firstly for liking that, secondly for liking it secretly, and thirdly for having that sort of disclaimer.

Why did you post this in the METAL discussion forum anyway?

Johny Cash and Pink Floyd are about the only non-metal things I listen to.

I usually listen to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, etc. when I'm not in an 'ear splitting' mood.... which usually ends up being right as I go to sleep.... usually it's either atmospheric or classical that I'll listen to while falling asleep.

oh, and some punk rock is also good. Bad Religion is a serious guilty pleasure for me, especially after seeing them live a few months ago.

I enjoy a good bit of acoustic/folk rock. It has a lot of passion in it and helps me relax.

I also listen to a decent bit of rock, punk/hardcore, and the occasional old-school rap.

I like The Cure, although I haven't listened to them in a while. A lot of bleak atmospheres, and interesting bass parts.

Guilty pleasure that was the wording I couldn't remember when I created this thread, so I used secret passion instead, which if nothing else confused some into thinking I was ashamed of it, when I just announced it on a massage board using my real name in my profile. :-)

But that still means you feel guilty about it, doesn't it?

I listen to tons of stuff: post-rock, indie-folk, rap, psychedelic rock, drum n bass, breakcore, johnny cash, Hank Williams I, classical, a little reggae...the list goes on and I'm always eager to hear new music.

I'm huge fan of post-rock, grindcore, ambeint, and classical. Recently I've been getting into some noise / harsh noise, jazz, noise / math / experimental rock, crust punk, and noisecore. I also quite enjoy Static-X's first two releases.

Soul, and Motown in particular. Maybe it's because I'm a bass player - scratch that, it's definitely because I'm a bass player and Motown invented groovy bass playing. And Stevie Wonder kicked ass when he was a kid.

Edit: There's also classical guitar and all different kinds of blues.

Other Edit: I really have not been able to enjoy post-rock so far, barring a few Explosions In The Sky songs.

I like some shoegaze. I'm into My Bloody Valentine and Chapterhouse right now. I listen to a WIDE variety of music. It's not hard for me to go from Darkthrone to Depeche Mode, Bathory to Pink Floyd, Sigh to Smashing Pumpkins, Entombed to The Smiths, etc...

I also like U2's album War, but other than that their discography gets pretty bad.

I love post-rock (as I've mentioned before), and more recently I've gotten into quite a few post-punk revival bands, with Editors very likely being my favorite of the pack.

A few months ago I went to a The Killers concert sporting my Anaal Nathrakh shirt -- I was actually quizzed about The Killers and "indie culture" in general by some douche-bag hipster who assumed that I believed The Killers to be a metal band. I didn't take him seriously at all, especially when he pronounced Anaal Nathrakh as "anal nat-raketh" and claimed to know Irrumator and VITRIOL personally.

--Chopin
--Holst<----
--Beethoven<---
--Wagner
--Yo-Yo Ma<----

Electronic/Industrial
--Icon of Coil<---
--Meat Beat Manifesto
--KMFDM

I listen to alot of Jazz/Funk like Herbie Handcock, Jaco Pastorious, Kool And The Gang, Marcus Miller, Parliament, Steve Bailey, Stuart Hamm, Vicotor Wooten..

I also like alot of blues along the lines of BB King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters..

When it comes to hard rock I listen to Blue Oyster Cult, Cream, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Eagles, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Police, Rainbow, Rush, Thin Lizzy, The Who...

There are some Non-MA Approved heavier bands I like such as Mudvayne, Rage Against The Machine, Tool...

And I actually love the band Black Stone Cherry. Even though they have a very comercial sound I find them to be a fun band to listen to.

Last but not least I have 2 guilty pop/rock pleasures wich are Angels & Airwaves and Better Than Ezra.

I recently went through my old cds and checked out the deftone albums. Some really good songs on them....

As with any sound individual, i listen to plenty of other music styles, but to be embarrassed, it'd be limited to Deftones.

While in training, I was surrounded by guys who weren't exactly the metal type. Thus, I kind of grew a liking back to a lot of old stuff I ditched when I converted over many years ago. Bands I returned to include Letter Kills, Alkaline Trio, Jimmy Eat World, 3 Doors Down, Beck, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, Thrice, Collective Soul, Coheed And Cambria, Lostprophets, and, to the worst extent, The Used.

For some reason I can't let these bands go. Otherwise, I'm into a lot of old school rap, electronic music, and and Bob Marley since a long time ago.

In my music library, I have one genre listed as Alternative/Other, which is basically all of the shit I don't think deserves its own genre. It's got Billy Idol, Dave Matthews Band, John Coltrane, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, Kenny Wayne Shepperd, The Killers, L7, Lenny Kravitz, Muse, Nicole Atkins (probably most controversial of all), Pat Benatar, Seether, The Wallflowers, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

These are really the only things I'd keep a more hushed tone about that I listen to, yet here I am typing them for all of you to read...

I liked Chinese Democracy.

There, I said it. Well, I like Guns N' Roses as a whole, and I've always thought Axl Rose is a great songwriter.

Also, Pink Floyd! ...AND classical music, but I don't really take a record and start listening to it; I love it, but I don't listen to it. I can even stand some of Spanish pop/rock, since my mom used to listen to it a lot on the car when I was 7-8, and at that age anything impresses you :P. In fact, I still like some of those songs that I heard as a child!

I'm open about everything I listen to, but I guess you could say the least expected I listen to is Hip Hop from the late 80s into the early 90s, and 1st wave Emo. I also liked Creed up until about two years ago. Now they disgust me :ugh:

It's not a secret, but I like lots of non-metal stuff. Genres I have really been into at some point include reggae and dancehall, funk, jazz, and punk. I've also got pretty good-sized collections of rock (both regular and indie/alternawhatsit), hip hop, and "latin" (meaning flamenco, cubano, and other stuff). And I dabble in, but don't really have a passion for, ambient, electronic, and classical.

One my most eccentric pursuits is spaghetti western soundtracks - got a bunch of those.

Rod Stewart easily for me, I see him in concert every chance I can possibly get.

I also have a big thing for Frank Sinatra. I probably listen to Frankie more than most metal bands because I use it as my "relaxing" music and just leave a huge play list of his work on random in the background.

Well I really enjoy listening to Jimmy Buffet, and Tom Petty whenever the wife and I are drinking. I also really like Garth Brooks; he's the only country musician I can stand. I do listen to rap, but it's only Tech N9ne. I also really enjoy some jazz, but it has to feature tenor sax the most. I can't stand trumpet based jazz music.

I like a hell of a lot of things besides metal, but one genre I absolutely adore is indie pop/twee. Stuff like Belle and Sebastian and Talulah Gosh. I honestly can't get enough.

My greatest non-metal passion is Rush. After Rush comes classical which is led by Schubert, Beethoven, Bach, etc etc. Then comes Jazz. Too many artists to choose from!

Yeah, Dead Can Dance are quite cool when I'm in the mood, really breathtaking and atmospheric. The Serpent's Egg is probably the best out of the albums I've heard.

I like Roxy Music a fair bit, and I enjoy some stuff like Enter Shikari. Stevie Ray Vaughan is also fantastic. I haven't been into music for a large part of my life, so I still have quite a ways to go.

I've never really been ashamed of my non-metal tastes, I really like being able to listen to other stuff.
I love Rise Against, Incubus, System of A Down, The Gaslight Anthem, and Anberlin, and a couple of these are among my favorite bands.

Also, I'm into punk. Love it almost [almost] as much a metal. The Exploited, Subhumans, Bad Religion, etc.

It's good to listen to a slew of different stuff, something great for any time.

Oh yeah, I also really like Johnny Cash, Radiohead, and Tom Waits.

Secretly, nothing.

I enjoy quite a bit of non-metal things. Probably my favorite non-metal bands/groups are Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, which both happened to be on 4AD and are amazing. I also like Enya (no, I don't "crank it" in my car) quite a bit sometimes when I want something relaxing but not really very dark or atmospheric (such as Dead Can Dance), if that makes sense.

I also like quite a bit of ambient, neo-folk, classical, folk, jazz (mostly fusion, really), post-rock, post-punk, goth rock and some rap/hip-hop. I'm pretty open to any music with some artistic value.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of things I heard on the radio as a kid just for nostalgic value. I don't think it's particularly good music but I do kind of enjoy listening to it. Namely Mark Morrison's Return of the Mack and Next-Too Close.

I love early 90's alternative rock. My parents were into it while I was growing up. You guys know that Buzz Ballads CD that has a commercial on TV? I like a lot of the songs on there.

I also love 80's synth pop. That stuffs undeniably catchy.

I like hip-hop, but I approach it with the same underground mentality I do with metal. Same with punk.

Have to agree with that as well. I've definitely been getting into a lot of that lately as well. I had a complete obsession with Depeche Mode a few months ago where that was almost all I listened to.

I got into Art of Noise a little bit recently and of course all the more mainstream synth-pop like A-Ha.

and I don't like punk or hardcore (unless it's close to thrash/grindcore).

Looks like I'm the only one here but whenever I'm about to go to a party or a club or something like that i like to listen to some techno or some rap or anything with some good bass to get the blood thumpin... not really the most metal thing in the world.
