Seriously now it seems to run rampant on this site. I hate this genre I hate that genre, what's the deal. I, as a power metal fan, want to know how many people think they can be a little harsh on here.

Also, is this anti-folk coalition for real?

I don't know why you think people here hate Power Metal, there are a few detractors, but no different than those who hate any other genre.

Folk DOES have more detractors though...but this is more a topic for the FFA.

Yea, I think this one may get locked, but...

I love folk metal and always will, and there isn't anything someone can say that will change that, as much as some will try.

People are a lot more open about their views here as the rules on this board don't call on you to be "nice", only civil.

I personally don't officially hate either. I generally don't "feel" with power metal, though do own the odd Angra and Sonata Arctica album because I like listening to the songwriting and musicianship.

Folk Metal wise, I am surprisingly tolerant towards most of it though get pissed off at the inoffensive, LOTR-esque drunken shanty stuff that predominates the mainstream. Give me Skyforger, Kroda and old Ulver anyday.

Regardless of how many folk metal detractors there are on this website, it's probably worth noting that MA's founders (Morrigan and HellBlazer) are both folk metal fans. From what I remember their favorite band is Skyclad.

I love most folk metal. My favourite band is probably Ensiferum and I'm a big fan of many other folk metal bands. I kind of dislike that type of ''dumb'' folk metal, the stuff made by bands such as Finntroll and Korpiklaani which is only about drinking and partying all the time yet comes off as unoriginal, boring and repetitive. That stuff I generally dislike.

I don't think the power metal or folk metal fans are as insanely active as the death or black metal fans on here. Also, you've got numbers to consider as well. For every power/folk band there is probably at least another 4 to 5 death/black bands.

Black Metal: 15833
Death Metal: 22576

Power: 4774
Folk: 1087

Black metal alone has more than 5 times the number of bands on the forum as do folk and power combined. No one really hates the genre's, they're just not followed as much by people as much as death and black are.

Personally, I'd take a power/prog/folk/doom album any day over the generic gobs of death/black that exist. Not too mention I'll take lyrics that are uplifting over the cold/bitter or gore/blood that is spewed by most death/black bands any day. So you certainly aren't alone, just in a minority of a minority group =)

I think the problem so many metalheads have with folk metal is that much of it is so awfully dumbed down. Eluveitie, Finntroll, Korpliklaani, Ensiferum.. I ate that shit up once, now I'm just tired of it, didn't last with me. The folk influences are often very minimal, often just being goddamn CoB without the keyboards but with repetitive metal riffs with watered down folk in it. (Ensiferum) At other times, it's chuggity chug chug plus folk instruments with the occasional melodeath parts, basically making it pop music with heavy guitars and harsh vocals. (Eluveitie)

Basically the above ^

If you genuinely don't like folk instruments in your metal, fair enough, but those are bad examples.

Power metal is quite liked around here I thought, the only stuff that gets shit thrown at it is the flowery Euro crap. It's not as discussed as the extreme genres, but it is fairly popular.

Folk metal however does have a fairly large number of people who are against it, I myself would happily join the Anti-folk metal group, but I like Moonsorrow and Primordial a whole heap, so I suppose I can't make a total claim of hating all folk metal. But anything in the vein of Korpiklaani is utter crap. I think my views are fairly common, provided there's little to no flutes and stuff, folk metal is fairly acceptable.

I think that true "folk metal" is full of folk instruments, I don't really see how metal can be "folk" without them..if its in the lyrics, well I don't think one should have to read the lyrics to find out.

Early Slough Feg, Primordial and Skyforger disagree!

You suck at math and at logic. Last time I checked 16,000 divided by 6,000 did not equal or exceed 5.
And as if there aren't 'generic gobs' of folk/power metal  Those subgenres aren't really hated any more than other genres are here, it's very possible that extreme metal fanatics are just more aggressive about expressing their tastes and preferences. Thus, resulting in relentless bashing of so-called 'flower metal' and folk metal.

I believe a big part of it is that Black and Death is followed a by a younger crowd than Power and Folk Metal and young people spend more time and are more active on the Internet than older (30+ that would include me) people do.
This of course do not explain why Folk or Power is more hated, but again I think age has something to do with it. When I was late teen's and early 20's I was very quick to dismiss music that was not my preferred style.

I even think you see a lot on this site with the general dislike of Metalcore as not being Metal enough or that they are posers. It reminds a lot of the 80's when the Thrash people where dissing all Hair Metal (yes, it is Hair Metal, it was never called Glam in the 80's. Glam is a 70's phenom from England). Fast forward 20 years and now Motley Crue and Twisted Sister are praised by a huge number of young bands as an inspiration and something that got them started, so who knows 20 years from you will have Metal bands saying that Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying was a great inspiration. ;-)

And their opinion is better. As for how it can be folk without them... how about the composition? Instrumentation is but a part of the music.

Conformity is not for metalheads, even within metalheads themselves.
You can't expect everyone to enjoy the same types of metal. Sure, there are some people that put these two genres down, but there are also a ton of fans of the genres, you really can't make any assumptions towards metalheads as a whole.
I for one quite like folk, and SOME power metal, regardless of what some may say.

I love folk and tolerate power. I dont get power metal as a genre as bands like Judas Priest are heavy metal yet Primal Fear (which sounds like JP) is power. Folk to me is more akin to my ancestors music than any other metal form at least instrument wise.
