Most of the video game music sites I frequented (most notably http://gh.ffshrine.org/ which had a myriad of old school vgm) are being shut down because they don't have the money to withhold their sites. In particular, I'm looking for a lot of downloads to 90's systems like SNES, NES, Genesis, and even the N64. None of todays bullcrap music with the sophisication; I love the 8 and 16-bit music :-P

So without the use of shady torrents and limewire, can anyone recommend sites they might know of where there's a wealth of quality mp3 vgm? And yes, I've tried Google and other search engines but am not having much luck.

That's probably not at all what he's looking for (the original music), although it's a decent site. Many of the "remixes" (not remixes at all) are pretty boring though.

Yeah I've been to that site many times as well. Not a lot of great remixes on the site though.

Seriously people, if you are not going to be helpful, why bother posting at all?

http://www.chiptune.com/

http://www.scene.org/ (huge archive with files dating back to the early 90s)

http://www.modarchive.org/ (ditto)

ftp://modland.com/ (same except gargantuan)

http://www.kohina.com/ (24/7 radio stream of VG classics in MP3/OGG)

http://www.hvsc.c64.org/ (massive SID collection)

Most of the real shit comes in obscure formats, so prepare to download a few specific players too. Some of those sites feature useful help sections for this purpose. If you just want some random blip-blop once in a while without spending time on the weird file format issues, I'd say just visit Kohina.

If you are so against torrents what would get the job done just as good as any web site.
Try this http://forum.songfacts.com/showtopic.php?tid/144907/
Has a couple of useful web sites to get what your after.
