Technically once a work is produced in a tangible form, it has a copyright.

If you are able to put the work onto paper (writing the lyrics down, put the music on paper, tabs, whatever means you have), mail it toy yourself. That in connection with what the person above me said, can prove a creation time/date (assuming you leave it sealed...)....

When you go and master a CD or an album most professional music editors let you tag the song with Your band name, the year and the copyright.

what you're talking about is "registering" the copyright, thrashfan07. You can do that through http://www.copyright.gov/register/

Get the SR Form.
