Maybe because they've produced some of the best RPG franchises of all time?

Oh god, here we go.

:( No, I don't want to start a major war here, but it's true that they have produced great RPG franchises, not to mention a slew of other awesome games. I suppose that's a bit of an opinion, so it can't be "true", but I mean, come on, they've released Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, and countless other fantastic games.

Er, you must not play many RPGs, huh? Like I said before, I don't want to start a war, but pretty much every RPG worth mentioning has ripped an idea or two off Final Fantasy.

Fixed.

Squaresoft's been dead in my eyes for awhile now. I try not to see them and Square Enix as one in the same, even though that's silly thinking.

Technically DQ was Enix though, as well as the older Star Ocean's developed by tri-Ace.

No, no it's not. I'm not going to argue this, especially not when my opponents are much better debaters than I. I withdraw all my previous statements, and concede that Square Enix has never put out a good game and Final Fantasy has never influenced another RPG.

Well you don't have to be a sissy about it, no one asked for you to deny your beliefs if you lost.

Anyone watch SC2 Battle Report #2?

http://starcraft2.com/features/battlereports/2.xml

A fun watch. There were some pretty basic mistakes. Probably done on purpose so we can see those badass Knighthawks.

First of all, Square Enix don't make RPGs. Second of all, the games you mention are rip offs of western games such as Ultima and Wizardry.

Who would want to rip ideas from Final Fantasy? What good ideas did Final Fantasy even have?

Right, I believe "Console Role-Playing Game" is the correct term.

Who would want to rip ideas from Final Fantasy? You got me there, to be honest the only two Final Fantasy games I enjoy are VII and VIII. Two of my favorite CRPG's of all time to be honest. Past that I have never had much fun with the FF series.

I would say however that many people would love to have Final Fantasy's level of success. No one can honestly deny the popularity and success of the franchise.

True, so I suppose if anyone else wants to take a swing at what makes FF so popular they can go for it. There are only two titles in the series I have put 100+ hours into my entire life so I do not feel that qualified to speak on it.

I am looking forward to XIII and Versus XIII quite a bit. The hype is getting to me.

So, anybody start playing Street Fighter 4? I was expecting to fuck this one up royally, and was pleasantly surprised. Either way, I started playing a couple days ago with Bison. He's a great character and depends on charging his moves. The thing is, i keep getting owned by people like Ken and Ryu when they spam moves constantly. And wahts more, I always keep getting stuck in a corner, and even my charge moves are pretty useless getting out. I'm pretty noob.... Anybody play?

I've been revisiting many "classics" I missed by means of PS1 and N64 emulators lately. I've been playing through Vagrant Story, Majora's Mask, Alundra and a few others.

I've always been interested in a Saturn emulator for PC. Does anyone know of one that works well?

It took me a long time to realize something in MGS4; Screaming Mantis does nothing but laugh at you the whole fight. Crying Wolf cries, Raging Raven fucking RAGES, and Laughing Octopus obviously laughs also. Threw me off. Awesome, awesome game though...

First of all, do your character challenges. #3 and #4 are the most important ones for new players. Learn to counter your opponent's actions. Like when someone does a shoryuken just after he gets up, block it and counter it with a combo from your character challenges. You can also grab him just as he lands from his shoryuken.

Crying Wolf was my favorite.

I also always thought this was pretty awesome:

Quote:
The Beauty & the Beast Unit is a somewhat tribute to the Metal Gear Solid series bosses; as a result the name of each member of the Beauty and the Beast Unit is derived from the name of a member of FOXHOUND (from Metal Gear Solid), their weapons are a derivative of Dead Cell members' weapons (from Metal Gear Solid 2), and their emotions similar to the Cobra Unit member codenames (from Metal Gear Solid 3):

* Laughing Octopus - Derived from the camouflage and name of Decoy Octopus, the P90 submachine gun and tentacles of Solidus Snake and the emotion of The Joy;
* Raging Raven - Derived from the name and flying accomplices of Vulcan Raven, the explosives of Fatman and the rage of The Fury;
* Crying Wolf - Derived from the name and fighting style of Sniper Wolf, the railgun of Fortune and the emotion of The Sorrow;
* Screaming Mantis - Derived from the name of Psycho Mantis, the thrown knife weapons of Vamp and mixture of The Fear and The Pain.

And so the persecution begins. :P

I am not sure why but it has always been my favorite in the series. It might have something to do with it being the first in the series I ever played but it has always just stuck with me.

So apparently, there's going to be a new Fallout (and I'm not talking about the rumored MMO), titled Fallout: New Vegas.

"It's not Fallout Tactics -- it's not Brotherhood Of Steel. It's another Fallout game," said Hines. "It has no impact on what [Bethesda Game Studios game director] Todd Howard and his guys are planning."

So, I'm wondering what kind of game will it be, as it isn't a sequel nor a spin-off. I'm hoping it will mean a sort of resurrection of the original Van Buren project. With Obsidian working on it, it's bound to be great and the New Vegas sub-title might suggest it being grittier than Fallout 3, sort of like the atmosphere of New Reno in Fallout 2.

"A number of Obsidian staff are veterans of Black Isle's original Fallout games. The company's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, was instrumental in founding Black Isle, and served as its director."

Cool! I just hope they don't water it down for the consoles, or make it too much like Fallout 3. Is it going to be an RPG?

From what I have just read on Kotaku and NMA it is looking like it will be the "same gameplay style of F3".

Please let them be wrong. :(

Well, this is an interesting question, as we can only assume that it will be an RPG, for all we know, it could be Fallout Pinball, or Fallout Texas Hold 'em.
I'm just hoping it will be NWN2 with guns. :P

So people had already been talking about the re-release/remake (not sure yet) of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 coming to PSN/XBLA. Now it looks like the teaser site has officially gone up.

http://www.tu4ar.com/

http://www.thegamereviews.com/story-304 ... -live.html

Normally I am not a big fan of fighting games but this one has always been a favorite (and one of the few Dreamcast games I still play).
I will be very interested to see if it is just going to be a direct port or if they will remake it with current gen graphics and what not.

HD remake with an online play mode would be awesome.

Is that what they are doing, then? If so I might just buy one of those consoles, finally. MvC2 is one of my absolute favorte games of any genre. I've had so much fun for so many hours with my friends just beating the shit out of each other.

I wish, but Capcom doesn't have the license for Marvel games anymore, and they are busy making/made that bullshit Capcom vs Tatsunoko bullshit (it sucks :( ).

They must have the license, because they are rereleasing it. If I remember correctly, the MvC titles became out of print when the contract agreement between the two companies ended, which is why all of Capcom Versus games are hot items.

No, they don't have a license to create new intellectual property using Marvel trademarks, but they can still distribute their old property. It sucks, but it's true.

Does that also mean they can change/update some things graphically within their games without it being considered a new IP (depends on the contract type?).

If it's going to be an HD remix, then that would be pretty different. It's very possible they may have renogotiated the terms of the contract with Marvel, but as far as we know now (which is very little) we can't really tell. Who knows, maybe there is a whole new agreement with the two companies and we might just see number 3 down the line, I certainly hope so as long as it's not like SF4 (no air blocking, really?).

I own the PlayStation 2 version of MvC2 and some of the characters look way dated and like total shit. Plus, using Alpha style Ryu and Ken? Really?

Ugh, I don't know how I feel about this now. I was sort of excited, but now I'm not sure.

Yeah I also have the PS2 version. I will be interested in owning a new port/remix of the game only if they keep the gameplay 100% the same, or if there are any changes at all it's to fix broken moves/combos/characters or add new elements that are totally balanced and improve the gameplay. I can't imagine a SF4 style game. No thanks.

Well, probably not. Capcom v. Tatsunoku is essentially what the older titles were as.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa9bC2tE ... re=related

There's even fucking Rival Schools characters in there! Somebody also mentioned in the comments there is a possibility of replacing the Tatsunoku characters with Marvel characters and making it the third game. Probably not too legit.

I hope it is what they are doing, it would be great to see a strong online community going for the game as well as a graphics update.

Hopefully we will know a bit more in six days when the countdown on the teaser site ends. It just went up this morning and all people have been able to offer so far is speculation.
