This is actually the first time I've taken a look at this thread. These photos are really beautiful.

I took a trip to the mountains about a week ago and took some photos for the first time with my digital camera. Unfortunately I'm not home at the moment but I will share a few that I took with my cellphone until I have access to my camera again.

edit: dreadmeat your goats were hardcore (or maybe just dumb)!

ha ha they were super hard core and staunch as, we'd come up the driveway and they wouldn't move, they'd put their horns down and try to butt the car.
our manky old horn-goat 'jim' used to piss all over himself too the dirty fucker, the chick goats really dug him though

goats eat all sorts of weird shit, you remember seeing them eat tin cans and old boots and stuff in cartoons? it's based on truth ha ha
they like to stand on stuff too, they'll even stand on each other if there's nothing else around, they were a constant source of amusement.

Haha, girls like it dirty.

Yeah, I know and I remember various mean cartoon goats from my youth. :-P I've seen my fair share of goats in my life. There are many here and I just stop the car, go into the field and observe them freely.

Someone told me it was snow, another one said limestone deposits. At first I was leaning more towards the latter, but up close it really did look like snow... hard to say, really. Are you sure?

this is some national geographic stuff in here, that marmot would make a great toque
i'm joking, feed it some pine nuts! those white trees are excellent.
re WHITE LUMP OF STUFF to me it looks like there is some vapour/steam coming off it, it could be a reflection though, the white trees had it too.

ha ha yaks or highland cattle? :p
i really like that photo, do you have a coloured one?

that'd be snow; the mist you see in the pics is from spray coming off the whitewater. The moisture and lower temps by the water (plus, it's away from direct sunlight) have probably kept the snowdrift from melting after all this time.

Yellowstone and Grand Teton are both within a day's drive of me but yet I've never been to either place. Now I'm all syched to go!

More photos, this time from my home stomping grounds (Southwestern Idaho/Eastern Oregon)
I'm having some problems with photobucket, so hopefully this will work.

Image
A little Garden of Eden spot in the foothills of the Owyhee Mountains. This 40' waterfall and pool is a popular swimming spot, for good reason: This place is so badass that if you could imagine what the birthplace of Dio, Ozzy, Lemmy, and Chicago Bears first round draft pick Shea McClellin would look like, this would be it. It was 100 degrees this day and needless to say, I jumped in shortly after taking this (and incidently, Shea McClellin is the only one of the aforementioned people who WAS born here. His home town of Marsing is just a couple miles away- you sports trivia guys would appreciate that.)

Image
One other thing the Marsing area foothills are known for, is that you can find some truely fucking wierd ass rocks. I mean, what kind of twisted genius would come up with rocks that looked like this??

Image
Another lovely example of local geology at work. A sick joke of geology, perhaps. What the hey is this anyway, petrified mucous?? (it's actually some type of agate/silica formation, apparently)

Image
Lair of the Owyhee Mountain Mortiis-faced trolls.

Image
The summit of South Mountain in the Owyhee range. There was a lot of silver mined from here. Killer views.

Image
The entrance to Moria. Or actually, it's the entrance to the Laxey Mine, one of hundreds of abandoned mines located throughout the western United States. Lots of silver and gold was taken out of here back in the day. Kind of a cool spot to explore.

Image
Lime iron deposits like this one formed naturally in the silver lode and were removed as tailings. The calcium-iron silica deposits would crystalize into clumps of bladed crystals like this one. Kinda cool looking, if worthless.

I'd feel guilty for quoting a lot of these photos and hogging up more page space. You lot should number the photos so i can point out the ones i like a lot easier. :P

But outstanding photos, i would really like to visit all of these places.

All of them except the first were taken from my Jeep- which also explains the spots on the panoramic one. Not since I've been living here, but I've heard plenty of stories. Usually they involve some towny wandering off into the desert without any water.

My family may or may not be taking some form of camping trip in the fall, may get some pictures then!

There was some story a while back about some Canadian fugitive named George Johnston who hid out in the Mojave Desert for over a year, and somehow survived by breaking into cabins and pilfering campsites. He would escape from persuing agents by outrunning them in 100 degree weather, and just had insane wicked desert survival skills. I don't know if you 've heard about this guy, but I guess he was pretty wily, and had people chasing him out there for over a year.
