I don't know if I can think of a more starkingly contrasting series than Gundam. There is absolutely no middle ground in this franchise for me, I either love them, or absolutely despise them. Modern mecha is pretty junky in general though, so my interest in new ones has been at an all time low thesedays. I thought G-Reco was alright, for the mecha porn, otherwise that ending was so bad it's unbelievable. "hey let's be friends and stop fighting okay lol fin" - am I wrong? Well, I'm practically a Tomino fanboy though so I enjoy his shenanigans, but he is best left in the cel days. There's nothing exactly wrong with G-Reco or Gainer for me, but they are very forgettable. Turn A was a lot better.

Anything that pulls five hundred cliches from UC Gundam sucks in my book. I didn't even like Wing as a kid. Tried watching it a few years ago finally and I couldn't even finish it (and I'm usually a completionist with anime). I have never seen such insane plot armor in my life. And the main characters made no sense. I hated everyone. SEED is blah and uncreative. 00 is garbage when that second season comes around and dumps on everything good about the first season and makes it a failed Zeta 3.0, Graham was such a cool anti-hero, Samurai Graham was worthless. Nena was only character I liked (yeah how unpopular is that?) just because she was on nobody's side and fucking everything up. This series deserved the Ideon beam. I hated everyone and wanted all the characters to die.

Didn't even attempt Destiny because it looks like puke, and I'm still not sure about AGE. The time leaps idea sounds very cool on paper, but I hear it's not that great of a show.

Well damn, how about some good? I absolutely love all UC Tomino Gundam. Zeta was admittedly a little rough a second time around though, definitely has a lot of annoying characters (ie all the cyber newtypes and most females that aren't Sara or Haman). I know people love 0080, but Unicorn is by far my favorite Gundam OVA because it felt so much like Tomino UC, and wow, what a perfect love letter to 0079 and everything, that final episode might top Char's Counterrattack in my book. I don't even hate ZZ, because I think Judau is pretty likeable, as are most of the ladies on the good side in this, and once it hits its second half it's solid stuff. Piss poor ending with a certain key character though. CCA could have been a lot more if it had more characters involved, but I'm okay with it being Amuro vs Char Final Fight.

Turn A is solid, but I like X more, and G Gundam just freaking rocks. Embrace its silly epicness and man it's a blast. I loved it. So the non-UC Gundam's that tried to be different from UC, have all been cool in my book.

Victory is the worst. I have ranted too many years over this one and have no energy left anymore. Katejina is the worst character I've seen in the history of anime. Even Tomino hates it. Burn it with fire.

So yeah, Gundam is weird. I can't help but be extremely skeptical by this point. I'm disappointed The Origin turned out to be movies too, I was hoping that was going to be a full blown 50 episode remake of 0079. I'd be down for that, but just random backstories of young Char? Ugh, do we really need it? While I love UC, I would love for Gundam to get away from the One Year War events. Unicorn was a step in the right direction. It's a shame F91 was cancelled and turned into a chopped up movie, and instead just a few years later we got Victory. What could have been...

If you guys like old Tomino, my non-Gundam favorites are Ideon, L-Gaim, Xabungle, and Daitarn 3. Zambot was a bit odd, I kind of hated the annoying main character and some stuff about it, but it's the most fucked up series ever and leaves an eternal impression to say the least. "Human Bombs", lmfao, holy fuck. Evil is an understatement. Ideon is dark killer Tomino, but done well in my book, and Be Invoked is just godly stuff topped off with one insane score by the Dragon Quest composer. L-Gaim, Xabungle, and Daitarn are all happier Tomino but still with a lot of dark and serious moments, incredible stuff.

My real dawg is Ryosuke Takahashi though. Votoms is the King.

I know it's not executed very well, but the ending in G-Reco is meant to portray that all of the factions didn't truly understand war (these people haven't been in any sort of armed conflict for like centuries). Most of the battles in the series are really just small skirmishes and there's not that many casualties. But at the end, things finally get real and all sides lose major leaders and decide that it's not worth it and withdraw from the battle. And Armenia was still at war technically. They got their episode count cut if half at some point during pre-production/planning or whatever. Tomino decided to go through with his story anyway, and I think it mostly worked, but yeah the ending could have been a lot better.

Honestly, I think Unicorn is terrible besides the visuals. :P It feels way too much like a bad fanfiction, and the power creep is ridiculous. The Unicorn literally reflects a colony laser at one point which is just too absurd. Axis shock from CCA has a ton of justification and is built up in a sane believable manner (in universe anyway). And let's not forget the literal Char clone. I guess 0080 is the best OVA overall, but I like a lot of the main series over it.

I guess while I'm at. I'll rank the major gundam entries in my order of preference (granted a lot of these I haven't watched in a while). Turn A > 0079 > CCA > Zeta > ZZ > G-Reco > G > X > F91 > 0080 > 0083 > 08th > 00 > Victory > Unicorn > Wing > SEED/Destiny > AGE. There's other OVA stuff, but whatever. Most of the franchise I like despite some of the glaring flaws. Like I completely agree that Katejina is a horrible character and poorly written. Victory itself kills off characters left and right for no reason as well. But on the plus side, I like Uso a lot as a gundam pilot. Despite the really low budget, the choreography is pretty unique (Uso trashes his machine a lot), and Victory (think of the cool space motorcycles!) has its charm for me despite being relatively bad. Wing is enjoyable for me in a similar way, but that's mainly because of how absurd Treize's and Zech's characterizations are. And the mobile suit designs are pretty nice.

Turn A is probably always going to be my favorite gundam though and one of my favorite shows period. I actually love Turn A's design, the setting is wonderful, and the quirky upbeat vibe it has is great. And like I said earlier, it has awesome character development. Like there's literally one entire episode about Dianna being a nurse and it's awesome. Loran's admittedly not as good as Amuro, Kamille or Judau as a character, but he has his charm and the cast is pretty interesting overall. (Harry is the best char clone.) And the last conflict at the end is glorious.

And yeah, I haven't really cared much about the Origin. It's alright, but nothing really worth getting excited over. Supposedly, Thunderbolt is really nice and I haven't watched that. If you're not adverse to silly fun from children's shows, I'd actually recommend the first season of Gundam Build Fighters. It's basically a spinoff that's about "beyblades with gundam," but a lot of characters are surprisingly really likable and fun. The fights are really hype and great to watch overall, and there's a ton of well-placed gundam references. Also, the sideplots are actually pretty good and resolved nicely. Unfortunately, the second season "Gundam Build Fighters Try" is total trash, and I would not recommend it. It was a huge let down honestly.

Admittedly, I haven't watched a lot of non-Gundam Tomino stuff, but I'm familiar with Ideon, and I loved Be Invoked. The series was pretty MOTW and repetitive, but man that ending. I love the Votoms TV series too, but most of the OVAs suck and I pretend they don't exist.

As for recent-ish modern mecha, I did enjoy Majestic Prince and Buddy Complex. MJP has CGI mechs, but it's honestly used pretty well and a lot of the action is great. It starts off slow, but the cast turns out to be surprisingly likable and tight-knit. It's pretty upbeat for the most part, but it has serious moments. The character designs have "hiraiface" which may give you bad SEED flashbacks, but they're used pretty well and are quite expressive. Buddy Complex is a solid series that got its second cour cut so the ending is pretty rushed (crammed into two special episodes; thanks sunrise), but it was pretty nice. Most of the mecha action is handdrawn and pretty well animated, and the main character is a pretty likable, socialable guy (pretty unusual for anime lol). There's some time travel shenanigans, but fortunately it makes sense. I've also heard that Fafner is pretty good, but I haven't watched it.

for someone who pretty much was closed minded with anime and thought it was all garbage i was introduced to death note and i am loving the hell out of it, is there anything similar out there to death note? i honestly cant get enough but i have not been reading this thread to avoid spoilers for death note(about 20 episodes into it) i heard good things about one punch man and ghost in the shell but one punch man sounds a bit repetitive and gimmicky though i dont know if it manages to get past its gimmick or not, gets great reviews though

One Punch Man is hilarious, it's only 12 episodes long and the gimmick stayed fresh for the whole show imo. Definitely worth a watch.

You might like Steins;Gate. It's a pretty heady sci-fi/time travel mystery that reminded me a bit of Death Note. Have you checked out any other horror anime like Hellsing, Another, Shiki? Those three are great as well.

So I just finished my first viewing of Angel Beats last night, and I gotta say, I went in expecting this to be mediocre like every other non-Clannad Key Visual story, but it was actually pretty damn good. Sure, many aspects of the setting don't make a lick of sense, but the characters are so attaching and the drama so satisfying that the holes in the setting just don't feel like that big a deal. Even the mind-boggling plot hole at the very end doesn't bother me at all because it just feels so right, goddammit.

Ugh, Angel Beats's setting is way too similar to Little Busters. Maybe whenever they finish the full VN; it'll be better. As far as Key goes, Rewrite is the best thing Key has done that I've read. Everything was great other than the Lucia route and even that had some great moments. Kotarou is one hell of a main character.

Well, if you like sci-fi, I can always add a few titles to your watch list~

First off, I must mention the obligatory Holy Trinity of 1998:
Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Outlaw Star, all of which
are sci-fi action series inspired by westerns that take place in space
or on other planets.

After that, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is
a two-season TV show that is an excellent choice if you're into
cyberpunk (and even if you're not).

The Big O is a stylish combination of film noir and giant
robot action that's a lot of fun, even if it's ending is a little rushed.

Psycho-Pass is an awesome dystopian futuristic series
that is *kinda* like the anime version of Minority Report.

Gurren Lagann is one of my all-time favorites, and it's a
fantastically awesome and silly mecha anime that just rocks.

Planetes is a more humble series that follows the lives of
space garbage collectors, who are all very interesting characters.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is another obligatory mention, but
it's a bit of a mixed bag--incredibly important to anime's development,
and it's got a lot to love, but it has problems.

And finally, another one of my all-time favorites, Fantastic Children
is a bit of a sci-fi/modern fantasy series that has one of the best storylines
I've ever seen, but also some of the worst artwork.

I really enjoyed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Big O. Outlaw Star was a lot of fun too.

A warning about the Ghost in the Shell franchise in general: it's all really fucking good and really fucking smart, but precisely what kind of "smart" you go for is going to determine which property you enjoy the most.

The original film dilogy is so ridiculously philosophical that it's nearly impossible to follow, and is enjoyable anyway because, like all Ghost in the Shell material, it is fascinating as fuck.

Stand Alone Complex has some of the above, but ramps up the socio-political themes to new heights. Tied with Ergo Proxy as my personal favourite, but I'd recommend watching the compilation OVA's, rather than the whole series. That way, you're basically watching a trilogy of very long films.

Arise and related media has smatterings of both, but fleshes out the personalities of the members of Section 9 quite a bit better while turning the concept into more of an action thriller (which, Ghost in the Shell always was, but interspersed it with a lot of talking and information dumps, something they pulled back on a little here).

Enjoy.

Huh, I thought the first film was pretty straightfoward. The second manga is pretty goddamn hard to follow though.

For GITS enjoyment I recommend 3 things:

1-If you will watch ARISE, pick the Alternative Architecture instead the quadrilogy. You'll get the same story better told and + Pyrophobic Cult which is the intro to the New Movie 2015, which is the way ARISE connects to the first 90's movie.

2-Watch GITS 2: Innocence AT LAST, not before finishing the whole Stand Alone Complex series (+ Solid State Society) and preferably after watching everything, including ARISE. Innocence is way too heavy on the philosophical side and to follow it you need to know very well the relationships and personalities of each member, especially Togusa and Batou.

3- AVOID the movies based on each season of Stand Alone Complex (The Laughing Man is one of them). It's WAY better to watch the whole thing.

Man, to understand the best way the characters is better to watch the whole thing than the badly copy-pasted 'work' they did with the Laughing Man and the Individual Eleven. They don't even serve as a good narrative of the story and the individual episodes also give a better grasp of the timeline in which all events happen.

I'd consider that argument in regards to The Individual Eleven, if only because 2nd GIG was not nearly as compartmentalised as its predecessor was, but The Laughing Man? You're getting pretty much all you need to know with that release, far as I'm concerned. To each his own. I like the idea of compilation OVA's and films, at least when done with some effort. They could just as easily have shaved the whole series down to the runtime of Solid State Society and fucked it all up in the process.

...Part of it is definitely the fact that the compilation OVA's are the only Stand Alone Complex releases available on blu-ray in North America. If you want a BD box of the full series, you'll be forking over tens of thousands of yen for the Japanese release, which may or may not include English voice tracks or subtitles.

They do. I own them and they have subs. Also, I looked for alternative subs on the net just in case and had no problems.

So I picked up the manga Crows the other day. It's a manga about juvenile delinquency gangs. The main character reminds me a lot of Onizuka from GTO. It's fun.

Maybe one of these days I'll actually watch something new, but I've only occasionally rewatched some older series lately. Finished rewatching Utena again and was remind how amazing and intense that show is. That show seems like one you can watch over and over again and learn something new. Also, G-Reco is a ton of fun on a rewatch. Love that show.

For anyone who might not know, Chiaki Morosawa (wife of Mitsuo Fukuda; the pair that were responsible for the not-so-stellar Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny) has actually passed away at 56. I guess Tomino just sucks the life out of other people in the industry or something (he's 74). I wonder if Fukuda will be inspired to try to put the Seed movie back into production.

Anyone here come across Osomatsu-san? Got into it soon after being intrigued by the art style and history (Osomatsu dates back to the 60s). While it's obviously aimed at a more feminine audience (prefer my anime neutral), I often found myself enjoying the humour (not all of it though; can certainly get cringeworthy once in a while) and the off-the-wall plot lines, not to mention the sudden moments of cleverness that appear out of the blue for no reason throughout the series.

Phew, IBO was horrible, and it seems like it's going to get a second season too. Common sense would have told me to give up around episode 10-13, but my OCD flares up if I leave a gundam show unwatched. I mean it wasn't quite as bad as AGE.

Ugh, Macross Delta is going to air very soon. I hope I can still find a way to enjoy it, but the preview was awful. I'll give it a few episodes I guess.

Gundam has been under a bad influence ever since Wing got so popular, so I've learned not to expect anything from that franchise anymore. As for Macross...I think they realized nothing will ever top Macross Plus, so they just kinda stopped trying. :V

Wing wasn't really notably popular in the place that it matters (Japan); about the same as most 90s gundams. And it didn't really influence anything either.

SDF is still my favorite Macross though. Plus is cool, but it loses a lot of the silliness and goofiness that makes Macross Macross.

Just started Cowboy Bebop after reading all these posts here. Took a while to grow with me but by episode 5 it clicked. It clicked hard. Showed it to my dad who enjoyed it as well which is pretty surprising considering him being a Ghibli-only fan.

Guess I'm not saying anything new but still, CB is damn incredible

Yeah from what I can gather, Cowboy Bebop is basically the Bolt Thrower of anime. Everybody loves it, from hardened vets to starry eyed noobs, it has a very unique setting and tone and it's just incredibly well done. I certainly loved it, that's for sure.

Frankly, I'd be interested in finding the person who DOESN'T like Cowboy Bebop, if only so I could throw a bag over their head and donate them to science for further research.

Anybody who liked Cowboy Bebop (aka everybody) should check out Michiko To Hatchin, similar badass vibe and it's a really awesome show.

Recently finished watching a little show called Allison and Lillia which was surprisingly quite good. Had a charming set of characters combined with a really neat historical future fantasy setting. And now, I officially have nothing to watch. Anybody have any suggestions?

Great show, I think I might have actually even preferred it slightly over Bebop.

I actually did like Michiko to Hatchin a little bit more as well. I'll check those out, thanks for the recommendation!

I'm so happy I live in a world where part four of Jojo is being animated. It's one of my favorite arcs of the manga, and David Production has done a great job so far.

So it seems my "One Anime per Year" is going to be Persona 4: The Animation this year, mostly because I was completely obsessed with the game as I was playing through it. The game was a really slow build and the dungeon crawling took roughly half of my 77 hour playthrough (with no backtracking or grinding because it's pretty brilliantly balanced) so the show seems to rush through it a bit (the first 20 minute episode covers like the first 3 hours of the game), and the filler episodes like the school camping trip seem less like welcome breaks from super long dungeon crawls and more like bizarre sidetracks. But considering my deep, deep love for the game I'm still having a lot of fun watching it.

The best part is that Yu has a personality here since he was a silent protagonist before, and it does lead to some funny moments like when he first sees Yukiko and Rise on the Midnight Channel.

My biggest beef with the Persona 4 anime is that the 4-hour-long character arcs for some of the minor characters (Yumi, Ai, Naoki, etc.) get maybe, maaayyyybe 5 minutes in the anime. And, like you mentioned, the story just blows right past you at breakneck speeds. Sure, if you've beaten the game, you can kinda sorta follow the anime, but if you're a complete newbie to the title? Fuck me, you're just shit out of luck, I guess.

Oh, and the whole thing where the action sequences play out with the Personae fighting in mid-air while the characters stand around and do nothing. Fuck that shit--Yu should be charging into the fray with his golf club like he did in the goddamn game! And Yosuke should be following right behind with his wrenches! And there should be All-Out Attacks left and right, with the cartoon fight clouds and everything! WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME, AIC A.S.T.A.?!?

I actually sorta prefer this Pokemon-like approach to it, because why should random high school kids be proficient using katanas and kunai? Granted, they never did much other than clumsy strikes and the Personas handled everything else in the game, so even then it's really not much of a difference, plus the characters are still reacting when the Personas get their asses handed to them (like Izanagi gets smacked across the room and Yu goes flying with him, Chie gets wrapped up in the tentacles and Tomoe is right next to her). I think Episode 10 is the last one I finished (Mitsuo's dungeon has to be the next episode) and I've loved how they've handled the fight scenes so far (other than using Pyro Jack to defeat Shadow Yukiko, which is insane). There are tons of little nods to the game all over the place right down to the scene transitions, so I'm fairly pleased with it overall. But yeah like you said, if you didn't play the game it's gonna move way too fast.
