The anime kind of sucks, but the manga is good :D The anime stops halfway through the manga's storyline and leaves the entire plot hanging there, like a fucking pussy. As a bonus, the manga actually has ~character development!~ :P

I finished the first season of Sekirei last night, it was totally ridiculous but had had pretty pervasive feel good vibe to it.

There was also an abundance of eye candy too. :oh shit:

Regarding Star Driver: I watched it and was entertained. The big thing that kept bothering me was how much they were ripping of Revolutionary Girl Utena, of all things.

My problem with Star Driver is that, for half of the series, the Big Bad is just sitting around waiting for his super-weapon. And when he finally does get it, he doesn't do shit with it. And the animation totally rips off Gurren Lagann at times, without being as good.

Looks and sounds horrible. Bones last good mecha show was probably Eureka Seven. That along with Rahxephon and Lagann oddly enough are probably the only real legitimately good mecha shows this entire decade, that's just pathetic. The genre has become nothing but fan pandering bullshit. They all have to involve school now (wait did I rant about this earlier?). I'm struggling to finish Zegapain right now and so I'm probably not even going to bother with Fafner and some other shit, my friends think I'll just hate it. Once my favorite genre... I've run that well dry...

Least there's some 80's mecha shows still being subbed that I can't wait to see finished up... L-Gaim, Xabungle, Bryger, the good stuff. And Layzner, goddamnit there's only been like 2-3 episodes released in the last two years. UGHHHHHHHHHHH will probably be one of the best ever.

Heh, I saw a Fafner trailer on one of Geneon Entertainment's Kyo Kara Maoh dvds. Many times actually, my sister loves the J-pop tunes on those adds.

Also, Steins Gate looks promising.

Is this somehow better then Go Nagai's usual tripe? Eh, I don't really care for horror and ecchi combo he is so fond of, especially when they were made by someone who might as well be a horny teen...

Violence Jack is frequently cited as one of the most disgusting and needlessly exploitative animes to ever exist. It's pretty awful, and pretty terrifying. I know this doesn't answer your question, but most people view Violence Jack as a DO NOT TOUCH kind-of thing. There's no real benefit unless you like seeing lots of rape and ridiculous violence.

Actually, that does answer my question, sounds like his typical stuff and likely not for me, thanks.

His typical stuff? I associate him more with the super robot stuff, but if it weren't for him hentai probably wouldn't exist. He pushed the boundaries back in the old days and stuff like Cutey Honey in the 70's was very risque. I respect the dude a lot having heard a lot about him, perverted or not.

Violence Jack is the one where I think someone rips off an alien/monster girls tits and eats them. Boner killer!

I didn't even know he had any robot stuff...now that I have read up, it seems I just didn't know he was involved in those. :p

Wow dude, he's only the creator of Mazinger, Getter Robo, etc... only... you know, those names aren't anything.

Masamune Shirow is the one who's lost his marbles. I think all he does is hentai thesedays and it's nasty/weird shit. Believe me I like my tentacles but his art is just hilarious if anything for that kind of stuff.

I didn't really care for it. The second half of the series is taken over by this horrible group of lame ass preachy villains that brought it down for me.

If you like Code Geass then by all means go for it.

I saw both BL seasons in Japanese and they weren't bad at all. Quite good. Haven't seen Bebop in Japanese, though it wouldn't be as cool to me as the dub.

Wow, I look like a real tool in this context. Oh well, guess its time to commit e-seppuku for shaming myself in public... or something like that.

Aside from that, I was going to ask if anybody had seen the whole Samurai 7 series, I watched a few episodes about a year ago and thought it was alright, and then I encountered a whole lot of people proclaiming it to be one the worst things ever and a disgrace to the legacy of the film it was apparently adapted from. Anyone know if its actually that bad?

I remember being amped to watch it and I saw the first episode. Fucking horrible. I went in thinking ok it's probably a wackier version of the film and translated into typical anime fashion, but it was a waste (all that money down the drain). Horrible CGI that looks entirely out of place, nonsense everywhere, lame characters, ugh.

^Alright, thanks for the heads up, I was considering shelling out for the series under the assumption that Samurai+Swordfights+Mecha would be pretty cool but I guess that's not the case.

At this point I've exhausted most of the well known series so would anyone be willing to rec me some good lesser known series?
I'm open to most kinds though I'd prefer to avoid anything too perverted[As in no rape\torture stuff please.] And anything along the lines of Champloo\Bebop would be a plus.

While I don't know of any series that are as artistically dynamic as Champloo/Bebop, I can at least recommend some fun/actiony stuff. If you haven't already, check out Outlaw Star and Mezzo DSA.

Of course, the best anime that no one ever sees is Irresponsible Captain Tylor, but that's more of sci-fi/comedy that spoofs a lot of space opera motifs.

Other than that, I repeat my suggestion of Guin Saga.

Great show, watch that.
Mononoke is a good one, a rather well down horror with unique art.
Then there is always Cat Soup, an rather interesting and short abstract watch, I won't bother trying to explain it as I doubt I'd do it any justice...

Shit, you guys just jogged my memory. Now I remember reading an article on Irresponsible Captain Tylor in an Otaku USA issue that somebody gave me about three years ago, back when I didn't have access to the internet.

I'll get on that shit right away.

Another great series (that no one ever hears about) is Fantastic Children.

Much like Now and Then, Here and There, the simplistic character designs are deceptive because this show is a goddamn powerful one.

Spoiler: show
Not that my post was even about that, but rather, the offensive idea that Bebop's mediocre-ass dub is somehow better than the original Japanese... :nono:

Ah, I thought that's maybe what you were suggesting but I was shocked. Cause everyone else in the world just jumps all over the dub. I want to see it in Japanese someday since Megumi (played Faye) is one of my favorites, even though I hear she gave Faye kind of a different take than the dub... guess that's always the case though.

Megumi does the narration for Rainbow and it's awesome as hell. She has a very eerie, cold and depressing but somehow hopeful voice doing it. I'm about to finish up the series, damn good stuff. Madhouse delivers as always. Am I the only one here who's seen it?

@TheOldOne: Oh man Tyler is one of my top favorites if we're talking comedies. I watched that one and Nadesico back to back once, hella good time doing that.

I'm not surprised. It looks like B-grade blood and guts boringness.

I'm surprised MD Geist has the rep of being one of the worst OVA's though, I thought the music was off the hook, and Geist himself is pretty much the villain which is fucking hilarious. I thought it was as awesome as some old Arnold Schwarzenegger films. The same director did far worse OVA's if you ask me, Cybernetics Guardian or Genocyber... now those were shit. But MD Geist had amazing music and was like a bad guy from Mad Max just killing everyone, lol.

I didn't care for Trigun's dub too much, but...

You insult Steve Blum, Beau Billingslea, or Wendee Lee, I'll have to hurt you.

^Wanna hear Steve Blum doing a really awesome job? Go watch TF Prime, now! (just sayin'...)

Anyway, I actually enjoyed Coboy Bebop and Black Lagoon's english dubs quite a lot. But yeah, Trigun's dubs (to ANY language) are all lame, at best.

Yeah.

For some reason Violence Jack is a giant? In some shots he's three times as large the baddies. In others, he's barely any bigger.

I actually find the chainsaw scene at the beginning of the third OAV to be kind of unnerving. Maybe it's the music, but something about it is just fucking freaky.

Anyway. I kind of want to get into some moody hard, character-driven science fiction. Yes, I've seen Akira and yes, I've seen Ghost In The Shell. I was kind of thinking Ergo Proxy or Texnolyze?

I know there's a couple more that aren't coming to mind. I'm looking for anything cyberpunk-y, really.

I love MD Geist. "Merciless soldier" is one of the greatest anime themes of all time.
My favorite in the macho action hero/ultra-violence genre however is Riki-Oh.
