Checked out Kool Keith, damn good stuff, any recs for an album to start with by him? I'm not overly knowledgeable when it comes to hip hop so I haven't really expanded my tastes within the genre and made an effort to dig deeper for other artists.

Kool Keith is a tough case because he's so prodigious in releasing records that there isn't even a semblance of quality control. Whatever he wants to put on wax, he does and ships it. Ultramagnetic MCs' Critical Beatdown is a great record, but the beat selection sounds REALLY dated these days and it'll be tough for people who can't get into that era of hip hop to enjoy it. After that, you go to Dr. Octagon's Dr. Octagonecologyst (but the follow up is weak IMHO), and Dr. Dooom's First Come, First Served as the best examples of him solo. He's really disappeared in recent years. His live shows back in the day were legendary. He'd go on and if the crowd didn't react, he'd leave 5 minutes in and that was it. OTOH, I remember hearing some dude talk about a crowd that wilded out and he did a 2 hour set and threw chicken wings at people.

Thanks for the advice, i'm gonna get on to looking into this guy as soon as possible. He sounds pretty true to himself and consistent for the most part. Personally, beat selection doesn't usually throw me off that much, unless it's really unorthodox or it's a complete cheesefest. Thanks for that sig too by the way ;)

I somehow skipped past your question the first read...I'd agree with trying Dr. Octagonecologyst or First Come, First Served, also Black Elvis/Lost in Space under the Kool Keith name is also pretty good. Matthew under the same name however is not, or at least not my thing at all since there are many rave reviews for it out there, his stuff is a mixed bag for sure.

I wouldn't give either a 100%, but II comes close. Walli was one of my favourite non-metal guitarists; probably shares the throne with David Gilmour.

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso's self-titled album. A must-have for any fan of progressive rock.

Lark's Tongue In Aspic. Was put off by this album first but it's amazing really. The self-tilted track is so fucked up (part one). Robert Fripp was so ahead of his time.

For the life of me, I have never understood all the hype with Eric Clapton. Indeed, I enjoy The Yardbirds, Cream and some of the Blind Faith album but I never was down with Slowhand being hyped by the rock music press as one of the greatest rock guitarist ever. I just don't get it.

So much early King Crimson was ahead of it's time, pushing boundaries that didn't even exist yet.

The OP's question is one that I could spend days answering. While I love metal intensely, I am a fan of such a wide variety of musics that I have a hard time explaining it. Perhaps a short list will help, off the top of my head;

Rush - A Farewell To Kings, Moving Pictures, Counterparts

Pink Floyd - Animals, The Wall

Johnny Cash - Live At Folsom Prison, American IV

Akira Yamaoka - Silent Hill 3 Soundtrack

David Bowie - Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf

Bright Eyes - Lifted or the Story is in the Soil

Sigur Ros - ( )

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Antennas To Heaven, Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada

A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms, Thirteenth Step

Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons

Radiohead - Kid A

The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come

Yes - Fragile

The Cure - Pornography, Disintegration

The Arcade Fire - Funeral

Pearl Jam - Ten

Alice In Chains - Dirt, S/T (Tripod)

Bauhaus - In The Flat Field, Mask

Fields of the Nephilim - Dawnrazor, The Nephilim, Mourning Sun

And so on and so forth...

Can's Ege Bamyasi is easily one of my favorite albums.

Best krautrock album ever. I think it's better than Tago Mago because the songs are better (shorter, too, which helps their staying power) and it's not over an hour long. Very experimental and percussive.

I wouldn't give this 100% ("Saint Veronika" and "Pocketful of Dreams" are lackluster and "Sudden Movements" is straight up boring), but this is a killer album. Definitely their heaviest album, I get a real strong Soundgarden vibe at times (The chorus of "Rusted from the Rain" really reminds me of "Outshined").

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven definitely fits this topic for me. Every time I listen to it it hits me emotionally on every kind of spectrum. Absolutely perfect.

I would also put Tool's Lateralus on here. Everything on this album was put together to fit seamlessly, and it shows. Nothing is out of place. 100 % for sure.

Nine Inch Nails' the Downward Spiral also qualifies too. Possibly my favorite concept album of all time. The Fragile comes close to being perfect, but there are a couple minor, minor flaws in it. But I love the rest of it so much it would probably be rated 99.999%

And I thought I was the only one on this board that took a liking to this album ;). Wouldn't go as far to say it was their best (II is still my favorite), but this album had some great strongpoints and hooks with songs like "Turn Your Back", "Tears Into Wine", and "Rusted From The Rain". On top having some great Soundgarden-esque moments throughout like BastardHead previously said. Think I'll give it a spin, being that I haven't listened to it in about a year.

I originally got into the band because "Turn Your Back" was on NHL 09 and I found myself humming the tune for about three months. III wasn't scheduled to come out for almost a full year or something insane, so I fell in love with II in the meantime. I think that one overall isn't quite as good, as there are a few songs that are pretty dull for me ("The Navy Song", "Covered in Cowardice", that other one in the middle of the album whose name escapes me), but the good songs are indeed really good. With III, the good songs are better than really good. The three you mentioned are probably my three favorites, but "Diamond on a Landmine", "Definition of Destiny", and even "White Sparrows", despite it's simplicity, are super close for me, and that's not to mention the other songs I really like. I listened to literally nothing but it for about a solid week when I bought it a year and a half ago.

Since this thread has basically turned into "Non metal albums I really like", I'll throw in a couple albums of this skatepunk style I've been digging a lot lately. Basically there's a blog I get a lot of my punk from (this place) and it seems like most of the stuff I end up liking is a smash hit over there, so either my taste is quite in line with the underground or I'm a total tool. Probably the latter, but I digress, this is some fun stuff.

The Decline - Are You Gonna Eat That?

Hit the Switch - Domestic Tranquility & Social Justice (though I think their best song is on a different album)

Mighty Midgets - Raising Ruins for the Future

Atlas Losing Grip - State of Unrest

III is a bit inconsistent, but it's not remarkably worse than the two predecessors.

Funny that you mention that as I first got into them upon hearing "Red Flag" on NHL 06 and it caught my attention, as a fun catchy piece of Alt-rock/punk (whatever, I'm not educated in the genre :P). Went as far to actually pick up the album after hearing it and was surprised at good the rest of their stuff was. Honestly didn't care for their debut, however. Got a more post-hardcore vibe and sounded fairly amateur. It also did have some strong moments, and didn't fail to be catchy as fuck like it's successors with songs like "Voices of Violence" and "Try Honesty".

The band suffered the typical Finnish prog band fate: no breakthrough before break-up.

Anything by The Smiths
Why? Because they are my favorite band and every album is just blissfully amazing. I can't even describe why but it really is the perfect band with the perfect songs.

Doolittle by the Pixies

One of the most ripped off bands imo. Upbeat, great melody, great vocals and lyrics. Nothing wrong with anything.

Void side of Faith/Void split
The punk band I want to be like but cannot emulate in the slightest. It's angry, fast, and pissed off. One of the best guitar tones, pure feedback when its not playing. Listening to My Rules on the Flex Your Head comp got me into them and they are one of my favorite punk bands.

Let it Bleed Get Yer Ya Ya's Out! by The Rolling Stones
Let it Bleed is so amazing and really nostalgic for me (Got into classic rock as a kid around 14-15 I'm 20 now but still, good times nahmean?) and GYYYO is probably the best live album ever. I listened to that album way too much.

Tenhi - Kauan

This is a beautiful acoustic album. Loads of atmosphere and memorable tracks. I really enjoy everything this band has released, but this one is just special.

here's some i can think of right now:
(haven't included borderline grunge like my sister's machine, or punk ala the exploited, etc)

edit: adding some blurbs after reading the first page :)

the pogues - first 3 albums: traditional celtic music with a rebellious irish attitude and the amazing rasp of shane macgowan. i fell in love with the pogues from the second i heard them.

days of the new - yellow album: i'm a massive grunge fan and this is everything good about grunge and something new besides. it's depressed, atmospheric, and angsty in that mid-90s way plus it's 100% acoustic. there are some live clips on youtube of songs from this album and they tear the roof off with acoustic guitars in the way most metal bands can't. travis wrote some amazing stuff and really had a vision.

die toten hosen - ein kleines bisschen horrorschau, kauf MICH!, opium fürs volk: these albums really sum up everything i like about the more 'sensible' edge of punk rock. hier kommt alex is just one fist-bashing anthem, the lyrics in some songs (alles aus liebe, wilkommen in deutschland) are genuinely heartfelt and campino has a brilliant voice, perfect mix of anger and tune.

green day - dookie: reminds me of being about 11 or 12 and just being a kid. funnily enough, that's how i imagine i'd describe this album even if it wasn't how i personally viewed it.

the offspring - ignition, smash: some brilliant hard-edged punk that is so much better than the pop-punk they put out later. short, catchy tunes with singalong choruses.

dire straits - brothers in arms: mark knopfler is a brilliant songwriter. this is an album i grew up with.

pearl jam - 10: eddie vedder (along with layne staley) has more or less THE voice of grunge. there's some seriously good guitarwork going on in this album, too, albeit half of it is in the background. listening to it with headphones on really gives you a new appreciation for a "bunch of dropout stoners".

alice in chains - jar of flies (i consider the rest of their catalogue metal, otherwise i'd add the lot): i like this the same way i like days of the new. acoustic grunge. there should've been more. and jerry cantrell is one of the best songwriters of our time.

screaming trees - sweet oblivion: every single song on this album sounds exactly the same. thank fuck it's a good song, haha. this is the soundtrack to dropping out of school in the early 90s, no doubt about it.

inxs - kick: their most popular album and with good reason! pub rock with a pop edge. half the songs have been played every day on every radio station in the country for most of my life, so it kinda feels like the backing track to everything i've ever done. oh, and hutchence was pretty hot for a dude.

pennywise - about time: angry skater punk with decent lyrics. not the amazing sarcasm of guttermouth, but good nonetheless. and riffing that'd give lots of thrash a run for its money. shame they always lived in the shadow of bands like offspring, when they should've been huge in their own right. instead they've been relegated to bodyboarding videos from the 90s, and that's kinda sad imo.

NOFX - white trash, two heebs and a bean: this was the album just before they hit it big, and it's way better than punk in drublic. as with pennywise, half the riffing on the album could be mistaken for metal. especially in 'soul doubt' - imo the best song of their career. funny lyrics too.

holst - the planets: our music teacher in year 8 made us learn half of Mars for some reason. my old man had a copy of the entire album and i just loved it. you put it on and your surroundings disappear until it's over. it really DOES sound like the soundtrack to the solar system, if that's even possible. has a nice "dirty" edge to it that earlier classical music doesn't have - comes from being more secular, i guess.

vivaldi - the four seasons: it's cliche, but fuck it. it's popular for a reason. it's my dream to one day ruin an evening in a fancy restaurant with vivaldi playing in the background.

richie sambora - stranger in this town: absolutely stunningly PERFECT aor - richie is a master of both vocals and guitar. i can see why he'd play second fiddle to jon bon jovi vocal-wise in a hair metal band, but he's the much better singer. he has a blues/soul tone to his voice and his guitarwork is lightyears ahead of both his contemporaries and his influences. a true musician in every sense of the word.

icehouse - man of colours: more aussie rock that i grew up with, and another album that flows from start to finish with barely time to notice the outside world before it ends. atmospheric, thoughtful, not-too-heavy, not-too-light.

noiseworks - self-titled: as with inxs.

bad religion - the grey race: it's just really well-done punk rock. not much else to say.

turbonegro - apocalypse dudes: this might be the best album in the universe, tbh. it's this perfect mix of punk and rock, with ridiculous lyrics and a real 'fun' attitude. douchebag-rock at its finest. strangely inaccessible at first, followed by one of those "holy shit, i get this!" moments and you can't stop listening again and again. been in constant rotation here for about a year, maybe 2.

dropkick murphys - the warrior's code: it's like the pogues with that boston flavour and a bit more of a hardcore punk attitude and tough-guy image. didn't like their earlier albums, but this is a real jump in quality. perfect music to get drunk to, and funnily enough acceptable to non-rocker types. this is what i put on when someone's stupid enough to let me play music at a party.

gary moore - wild frontier: gary moore is the king of guitar. fuck malmsteen, fuck eddie van halen, fuck ritchie blackmore, etc. moore's lead playing and sense of harmony is what draws me to this album. he writes some perfect mid-80s hard rock that borders on heavy metal at times but always steers away at just the right time. this album should be required listening for all upcoming guitarists that don't want to be stuck in the "metal fans like me but no one else does" rut.

HIM - razorblade romance, dark light: these might be metal, but hey. valo writes some really cool melodies and his voice is strong, despite what you'd think. kinda like amorphis- or sentenced-lite.

oasis - what's the story (morning glory): does this even need explaining? the gallagher brothers are amazing cunts.

tina dico - a beginning/detour/open ending, count to ten: she's kinda unknown but i just love this chick's approach to songwriting. the music is usually a blend of folk and country, but her voice and the lyrics are what draws me to it. every song is a story, and her choice of words and delivery are just perfect. if you've never heard her, listen to "he doesn't know" or "friend in a bar" to see what i mean.

scooter - the age of love: i can't even explain why i love this album, but i do. the first song samples the main melody from terminator two and i think the rest of the album had me from there. it's upbeat, it's got a driving beat, it's what you listen to if you need a pick-me-up.

Maybe not 100 but I'd give Section.80 by Kendrick Lamar a 95. It was my favorite album from 2011.

Yes not quite 100%, but still a damn good album. I still think its horribly pretentious how he goes on about how the ghost of Tupac came to him in his dream and told him to keep his music alive or whatever.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor- F#A. I like all of their stuff, but this one is just unsurpassed in my book. No other record nails such bleak apocalyptic vibes. This is the end of the world put to music.

Temple of the Dog - ST. I loved Pearl Jam's first album and Soundgarden, so when I learned that they had made a release together, I more or less flipped balls and bought it asap.

Subhumans: From the Cradle to the Grave. Not only one of the first punk albums I fell in love with, but just an EPIC mother fucker in sheer length....especially for a punk album. The title track alone is so enthralling for me, detailing nearly every social malfunction that we are all guilty of from birth to death.

Bad Religion - pretty much the entire disco, I'm a huge fanboy of their material. I guess the BEST from them would be either Generator or Strange Than Fiction. I hopped on this band a bit late with STF being my first album from them, I have always loved the catchiness of their singing and riffs - simple though they may be.

Alice In Chains: Jar of Flies. This one could actually be my favorite musical release of all time...when I was 16, my ex-girlfriend and I were pregnant and had decided to give our daughter up for adoption. I had just acquired this cassette the day before she went into labor, and upon or empty-handed return from the hospital the very first song to play was "Don't Follow," and it literally brought me to my knees in grief. Ever since then, this ep just does something to me - I never get tired of it, I never skip a single track. Last year, my now 17 year old biological daughter (we began corresponding about 15 months ago) listened to it for the first time on my recommendation....she also loves it.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream. Metalheads love to shit on this album and give me a hard time for listening to it, I don't give a damn. "Soma" and "Mayonnaise" are two of the best tracks from this band, and I love the melancholic nature of those tunes.

Pennywise: About Time. I actually haven't listened to this in years....but it just rocks. Great catchy punk, without being pop.

Butt Trumpet: Primitive Enema, just because it's one of the most hilarious punk albums I've ever heard. If you've never heard this band, search for the song "I've Been So Mad Lately".....actually...fuck it, here ya go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW3l5Uum-4M

Mudhoney: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge....Another catchy grunge album (I have a ton of those), and easily the best from Mudhoney from before they enjoyed co-exploding with "The Big Four" of grunge.

Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here. The title track alone is sufficient explanation for my rating of this @ 100%

R.E.M.: pretty much everything from their inception to Automatic For the People, barring Out of Time. I started listening to this band and U2 in the mid to late 80's as a kid. There was something in R.E.M.'s early work that was so genuine and moving, I believe they lost that after AFTP. When I was a child, I wasn't allowed to listen to anything remotely close to metal (my father was/is a minister), and so I had to inherit certain music from my older siblings that was deemed "ok." R.E.M. and U2 (along with some others) were my musical mainstays for some time.

U2: The Joshua Tree. This band's early works, like REM, were radically different from their later material. I LOVED the early albums, but the pinnacle of their existence for me is this album, hands down. "Running To Stand Still" and "In God's Country" are possibly my favorite songs from them, ever. In fact, I'm going to put the cd on right now. Before Bono become the ironic godfather of tripe, the man actually could reach through and grab hold of your attention and simply not let go.

Tracy Chapman: ST. Good god this women can sing. Another artist from my pre-metal days, when I heard "Fast Car" in 1987 I was hooked. I loved how almost all of her material was socio-political in nature, lyrically. "Across The Lines," "Behind the Wall," and "For My Lover" are all extremely thought provoking tunes.

Dead Kennedys: Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, as well as Bedtime for Democracy. I have an incessant love for 80's punk, it's just that simple. DK was an in-your-face-sans-violence band, which always struck me as an interesting oxymoron(ish) vibe in my younger years. I may not agree with all of Jello's viewpoints, but his hatred for the political right made it impossible for me to not love these albums.

Haha, cheers....I just now noticed we had these two on our lists. Concerning PJ, I totally agree....there was a short time where that band ruled EVERYTHING. And I loved it, such a refreshing break from the legions of anal leakage that flooded the musical world in the decade prior. That Bad Religion album is good...not one I'd put towards the top of their disco, but still good.

@ SHUTUPANDDIE:

Love the Temple of the Dog self-titled as well. Cornell's voice was at its peak on that album, and it has some incredible songwriting on it.
