Forgot to mention If This Is Hell Then I'm Lucky by Deadboy And The Elephantmen. That record takes me places. Beautiful, ethereal sounding music with the greatest vocals ever.

The album as a whole drags a bit towards the end. But yes, Cornell never sang any better!

Agreed, Cornells best performance.

Great stuff! I also like his solo stuff, especially his latest, Say goodnight to the world. It's a pretty dark album if you ask me. "I hear satan in the basement of the pentagon" Seriously, who writes lyrics like that?

Non-metal albums I would give (almost) 100%:
Manic Street Preachers - Gold against the soul & Send away the tigers
The Music - The music / Welcome to the north / Strength in numbers. All three albums are awesome. Worst band name ever though.
The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
Doves - Kingdom of Rust
The Hold Steady - Boys and girls in America & Stay Positive
Kasabian - West ryder pauper lunatic asylum & Velociraptor!
Muse - The resistance. Yes. You read right. MUSE.

The music - Strength in numbers. This is awesome shit.

Christian Death - Only Theatre Of Pain. Easily one of the best goth albums from the USA.
Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park. Their noisiest and most haunting release, still gives me the chills each time.
Death In June - Rose Clouds Of Holocaust. I love everything I've heard by them, though.
Boyd Rice - Music, Martinis and Misanthropy. Because it's awesome.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust (unbelieveable album in it's scope and depth - there's a new article in Rolling Stone about Bowie that is pretty amazing if you have not seen it)
Counting Crows - August and Everything After (i love this band, yes i will probably take flak for it)
Rancid - And Out Come the Wolves
Bad Religion - Against the Grain, Generator (the best punk band IMHO)
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusion I, II
NOFX - White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean, Punk in Drublic (2nd best punk band)

Probably have a ton more. That's all i got off the top of my head.

I think the first two are more consistent and overall better than Strength in Numbers. The second half of the record isn't as awesome as the first few songs, but still pretty good. Which single do you mean? They had three for that record (title track, the spike, drugs) I love all three :)

I kinda see why you were put off by it. It's somewhat different from their first two. You've got nothing to lose by downloading it, so i'd definitely recommend you give it a shot. Try "The Spike" and "Fire". If you don't like those two I doubt you're going to like the rest of the songs. It doesn't really have that "album" feel, so listening to the whole thing from start to finish won't make the difference it does in other cases.

The Music - The Spike

The Music - Fire

I should've checked them out during my post-rock phase, but didn't, favouring crappy modern bands. I'm listening to Slint - Breadcrumb Trail right now, and it sounds quite a bit like early and mid-era Mogwai in some parts. Do they also have those soaring, grand crescendo things or those mellow, fragile atmospheric pieces?

Mogwai clearly took huge influence from this band.

Not even rock: George Michael's Faith and Older. The guy is just incredible and the songs are very well written (hey, he's one of the very few mainstream pop artist that writes the music, lyrics AND record instruments).

I don't have too many albums that are 100% but I have a ton that are pretty damn close. I was just listening to Houses Of The Holy and concluded that it would've been a perfect album if they hadn't put The Crunge on it. The main riff is pretty decent but there are times when I just can't stand that song.

Some more albums I'd add to my list:

Can- Tago mago, ege bamyasi, future days
One of the most inventive and unique bands ever, they were on a roll with 3 experimental psychedelic rock masterpieces in a row, each one sounding different then the previous one.

Miles davis- in a silent way
Classic jazz fusion album, every second is perfect, great chill out album.

Frank zappa- Freak out, we're only in it for the money, hot rats, the grand wazoo, overnite sensation, apostrophe, one size fits all, lather.
There are a few other zappa albums that come close to being 100% as well.

The chameleons- script of the bridge, what does everything mean basically, strange times. 3 classic post punk albums in a row, well strange times doesn't sound nearly as post punkish but is equally amazing.

R.E.M.- Murmur, Automatic for the people, Reckoning
Maybe would add life's rich pageant to this list as well, but needs a few more listens first.

Love- forever changes
One of the most amazing psychedelic rock albums ever, the songwriting on this release is just impeccable.

Kraftwerk - the man machine. One of the few electronica album that I know who have any depths. A classic

Biosphere - substrata. The true essence of the north

Neu! the first album. A strange album with a lot of different moods. Their third's would worth 100% as well if it was not of its last half whom drag it down a bit

Ildjarn - Hardangervidda. The true soul of nature in music

Tangerine dream - alpha centauri. It's like religious music from the deep space.

Autumn's tears - Love poem for dying children act1. Classy, beautiful and sad

Cocteau twins - Garlands. Dark and disturbing but not in a goofy way

Dead can Dance- the first album. Really ethereal and dark at the same time

Beherit- Electric doom synthesis. Dark and mystic

Burzum- Hlidskalf - All I can say is "Der Tod Muotans"

I don't really listen to rock anymore, but when I was in it, AC/CD -"Let there be rock" was the best. The rest of their discography, especially after Back in Black is pale in comparaison. This was rock was meant to be.

I might be a little uncultured in the non-metal scene, you may say. But oh fucking well.

Circa Survive-Juturna
Circa Survive-On Letting Go
These records are Indie/Progressive/Post-Hardcore hybrids, but even that does not do them any justice. A select few may shy away from the vocals, because they are truly the embodiment of "You either love them or hate them".

Deftones-White Pony
This record is just all around amazing. Now, if we're considering the "refined" version without the dreadful "Back To School" opener, then this is a 100% for me. They coined a unique sound that has often been emulated, but never surpassed. Plus it includes one of my all-time favorite tracks, Pink Maggit.

Deftones-Saturday Night Wrist
A very experimental record for Deftones, but unremittingly addicting. Here Deftones even further develops their signature sound, and the result truly pays off.

Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not Cold And Dead
Just beautiful, with awesome build-ups and equally awesome melodies. Can't say much else that the record doesn't say for itself.

Faith No More-The Real Thing
I had a hard time choosing from the Faith No More library, since everything they've done is golden in my eyes. But this is probably the most consistant, groovy, and accessible album they ever released. That being said, it's range is so extravagant. From the rap-inspired Epic, to the heavy-as-fuck metal influenced Surprise! You're Dead, to the jazzy Edge Of The World. Whether it's to be considered a metal record is up to debate.

Honorable Mentions
Sigur Ros-( )
Mr. Bungle-California
Marilyn Manson-Antichrist Superstar
Tyler, The Creator-Bastard
Earl Sweatshirt-Earl
Mogwai-The Hawk Is Howling
Angelo Badalamenti-Twin Peaks Score

I always found Explosions In the Sky to be typical, unoriginal Post-Rock. I have that problem with most of the genre, cause the bands rarely deviate from a very specific formula of quiet, build up, then loud. Godspeed You! Black Emperor still reign supreme IMO.

It's like riff/verse/chorus x2 then solo pattern for 80s metal.

Precisely, but it's even more flagrant in post-rock. As they seem to just directly rip music from each other.

EITS is kind of the archetypical band for me. I know they weren't the first but they are arguably the most popular (behind who? Mogwai, GY!BE, that one Japanese band whose name eludes me at the moment?), so I, like many many many others, got into the style via EITS. Therefore yeah it's the same build and release style all the time but it's the first that a lot of people heard, so they're gonna get a pass from many.

Forgot to mention If This Is Hell Then I'm Lucky by Deadboy And The Elephantmen. That record takes me places. Beautiful, ethereal sounding music with the greatest vocals ever.

Oh, fuck yeah, man. Dax's two solo albums would also receive a 100% rating from me. And probably the two Acid Bath albums, too. Haha.

I'd also have to say that Explosions In The Sky's All Of The Sudden I Miss Everyone would get a 100%, too.
