I've hung out with the frontman for Maximum Oversatan. I may have even had beer with him, but it's hard to be sure when it comes to these things.

Sounds good. :D They are honestly probably the first case ever in history when I want to check out a band purely because of their band name.

I didn't realize the filter also caught the *o* variant of the word (which shall be henceforth referred to as "the L word").

Regardless, deal.

I don't even know what a Jon Lajoie show would be like... does he just play his songs or is it more like a comedy act?

I think he played some of his more famous songs, like the genitalia one, but other than that I'm not entirely sure. If I caught the act, I would've been able to answer this. :(

Just got home from the Alcest show and damn they were great. You guys who still have to go will not be disappointed, I can't speak for Anathema though cause we left half way into their first song. The opening band was complete and utter garbage but it was worth it for Alcest. Also got to meet Neige he was pretty cool for the 30 seconds I got to talk to him. Final note got to meet Smoking_Gnu tonight and he was a pretty cool dude so all in all twas a good night.

Why in the hell would you leave during the best band in the whole show? :nono:

Meh that may be true but it wasn't really stricking a fancy for either of us so we decided to just leave. And because Alcest was the show, for me at least.

I never really checked out Weather Systems before seeing Anathema live earlier this year but damn, they opened with Untouchable I & II and I loved those songs instantly. It's strange though I usually am not a sucker for relationship-based emotive lyrics, but probably at that time, they really struck a chord. Ended up reminiscing about past relationships :/ The rest of their set was great, covering stuff from as far back as Alternative 4 and Judgement as well as the new stuff.

Honestly, Anathema weren't that great live. And I'm easily impressed by stuff in a live context. For every fantastic soaring emotional etc. moment there were long stretches of pure-snooze... I really don't get the fuss.

I'm not even so keen on Anathema's metal stuff. It's nice enough, sure, pretty well done, even. But it doesn't really excite me.

Im still thinking of checking Anathema's demos. Also I maybe should revisit their debut album cause I don't remember much of it.

I'm much more into a heavy/power/progressive metal since the last couple of days again so Anathema's got to wait. :p

I just read Erosion's location as Scumburg, IL. A part of me wants that to be real.

"Schaum" is the German cognate for "scum", with a related, though not identical meaning. So I guess it's real in a way.

That is apparently what all the Chicago/suburb natives call it, though having lived here for a month now I don't really see it being that bad...

And yeah, Alcest was way better than Anathema in my book. Great set, though I was hoping they'd play Ecailles de Lun Part 2.

 until last night I had actually never heard anybody say that before. It's funny because the next town over (where I actually live) is pretty scummy in parts but Schaumburg is actually really nice.

Anathema's best part is the lyric department. The metal songs never grabbed me much and the uber pink floyd era is pretty stale excepting a couple of songs here and there. For instance, I prefer to listen Antimatter's version of Lost Control and Corde Oblique's version of Flying. I find the vocals to be quite weak, especially in live settings.

From the other 2 doom/death pioneers, My Dying Bride has impressed me a lot, especially when I saw them live. They truly sounded powerful and emotional, way more than any of the studio recordings. Aaron in particular was excellent; his growls were inmense and deep and his cleans very emotive yet perfectly pitched.

I also have a good impression of Paradise Lost. I saw them live with Carcass like 5 years ago and Nick nailed every song, plus the band was solid as an anvil.

There's actually a lot more to Weather Systems than that, they have very few actual songs about relationships and the last two albums have this whole "carry on and live" theme to them, which most of the time is done really tastefully (unconvincing uber-happy songs tend to just annoy the hell out of me, but these are far form unconvincing).

Also, seen Anathema five times this far and pretty much everything about them was amazing (just bring back more stuff from A Fine Day to Exit :( ). As for Alcest, saw them once before Katatonia, and they were pretty good but did not grab me that much personally.

Does it make up for it that "ftw" is dead center? ....:(...?

"Raft" and "we" don't provide much consolation.

Is there such a thing as a coaxial-to-VGA adapter? I really wish I could hook up my C64 to a computer screen...

Edit: Just googled and found a converter box on eBay International, I didn't find one at first because I was searching for "coaxial", but the correct term for the plug I want is "composite", didn't know that.

I don't like Alcest, but Anathema were very special to me in my late highschool days. The trio of Eternity to Judgment kept me going through some emotionally shitty times and, as cliché as that may sound, I'll never have a bad word to say about them. The older stuff can be a bit lumbering but I find that they were at times the most melodically sophisticated of the "big-three" of English doomdeath bands, and I appreciate Daniel's powerful lead guitar playing. Sometime after Judgment they really lost me, but I did consider going to the show last Wednesday, for nostalgia's sake and because I thought it might actually be a powerful experience. I ended up spending a lot of money on replacement drum hardware though, and there are lots of good shows coming up and other expenses to pay, so I ultimately decided against it. Was told the show was good though...guess I missed my chance.

Honestly, I think newer Anathema kind of blows. Their death/doom stuff was awesome, and I like everything up until A Natural Disaster, but the stuff they've been putting out recently bores me to tears. The remakes of their older stuff was completely needless and with songs like "Everything" I feel like I might as well be listening to Coldplay.

Serenades is just such an hilariously terrible album; I literally burst out laughing every time I hear it. It's true The Silent Enigma showed a marked improvement but I still can't understand how their early work could be considered legendary by anyone.

I see where you're coming from with Everything, though. It's basically just a slightly modified 'Clocks.'

I was really into The Silent Enigma about ten years ago. Think I'll give that one a spin tonight, actually! I only ever listened to Serenades, TSE, Eternity and Judgement before generally losing interest in the band. All of those albums have their moments (had a soft spot for a handful of tracks from Eternity for a while), but fuck it, The Silent Enigma is the only thing that's kept them in regular rotation for me. Restless... oblivion... FOREVER!
