My guess would be a penny whistle with a shitload of reverb. Got a few of these still kicking around from my childhood.

I'd second that. It definitely sounds like a synthesizer.

Summoning used a real flute on "Land of the Dead." With the exception of that, the vocals, and the guitar parts, everything else on that album is synth or a sample. And honestly, sometimes I consider it an open question whether the guitars are even guitars. At the least, they obviously compose the guitar parts on piano first and then figure it out on guitar.


For the guitarists on the board, check out the fingering/phrasing on "Runes of Power" (particularly the second riff) as well as the arpeggio on "Might and Glory."
