My band Lanterns Awake was rejected when I submitted it a few years ago. We called the genre of music "Blackened Sludge Metal". I certainly believe that it was heavy enough to be included on Metal Archives.

At the time (this was a few years ago) I believe that all of the recordings had been lost (I suffered 2 hard drive crashes shortly after the band's span). When I submitted it to Metal Archives, one of the ex-band members sent me some of the recordings that he found, but they were without distortion, since the distortion was added during post-production (I think it was using Guitar Rig on those recordings). I believe that the rejection reason was that it did not sound metal (because of the lack of distortion). Or it may have been because back then, digital releases were not accepted on Metal Archives.

Since Metal Archives does now accept digital releases, and most importantly, since I have recently located one of the recordings that was made, with distortion, I would like to appeal the rejection of Lanterns Awake. The song that I found was actually uploaded to Soundcloud at the time! So this is time-stamped for proof!

The band released 2 demos in 2010. The demos were available for free download during 2010, but we removed them in early 2011 when we decided to re-record the songs at a better studio. Since then, the original recordings were lost (as explained above). The song on Soundcloud is the only one that remains, so I hope it will be enough to judge the heaviness of the band.

The two demos can be confirmed here:

In addition, the band featured two band members that are already on Metal Archives and have been in other metal bands.
Alexandre Julien (myself, https://www.metal-archives.com/artists/ ... lien/44036) and Patrick McDowall (https://www.metal-archives.com/artists/ ... all/667984).

The song uploaded to Soundcloud above was also mixed by Garry Brents (https://www.metal-archives.com/artists/ ... nts/301131)

Thanks in advance!
Alex

I am bumping this, so it appears again on the first page.

It was blacklisted in March 2018 (we first started accepting certain digital bands in 2013). The reasons for the blacklisting being that a) the demos were quite rough and b) the music sounded more drone than metal anyway.

Our views on valid digital releases have relaxed a bit since then and the linked song seems more metal than not, but if we are to base the band's inclusion on the demos at all, we'd need to listen to all the music. If that's not possible the band is not acceptable at this point.

Thanks for your feedback Azmodes. That recording linked above is indeed the only remaining recording of the band to survive. It did appear on both demos though, in earlier, rougher quality recordings. The two demos that were made available to the public had the same two songs, "Part One" and "Part Two" (different recordings of the same songs). And the song linked above is yet another take of "Part One". So you have heard the song, just not the same recording from those demos.

In view of this, since hearing "Part One" above represents 2 of the 4 songs that were made available to the public, is that enough to reconsider for white-listing? The only other song was "Part Two", is lost forever.

As stated above, we'd prefer to listen to both songs.
If that's not possible, bring them up here:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=104654

Maybe someone somewhere managed to download it back then or finds a trace of it.

Also how exactly were they released? Maybe there's a trace that could be followed in order to make this band acceptable.

Thanks for the reply PaganiusI.

The two Lanterns Awake demos (the same 2 songs released twice as different recordings) were made available for free download on Bandcamp, Last.fm and on Myspace back in 2010. They were on both the Lanterns Awake Bandcamp, Last.fm and Myspace pages and the Mortification Records Bandcamp, Last.fm and Myspace pages (so 6 places in total). Mortification Records was my record label at the time.

Since I was managing all of these pages myself, I had access to the stats (stream/buy/download stats from Bandcamp) and I can confirm that no one downloaded them. There were some streams but no downloads. And that was fine for us at the time because these were very rough recording demo releases and we weren't going to be promoting them; we wanted to wait until our proper EP was recorded and released to promote ourselves. The few people that discovered us through the two demos were fans of the band members' other bands and we thought it was cool for them to feel like they had "discovered" us on their own.

I'm a researcher and archivist by trade, so I've done extensive searching on finding the recordings over the years. It's safe to say there is no one out there with anything else than what I've already posted in the post above. Both songs, Part One and Part Two, are available to hear, but in later recordings from the ones that were released (they were re-recorded many times). The Soundcloud link posted above is Part One, with distortion and a good quality production. The missing song which you are wanting to hear is called Part Two, and that was the one that was submitted when the entry was blacklisted. But as explained, that was because the final mix of the song was lost over the years, and what I sent in for hearing was only the raw, clean guitar tracks, without effects or distortion, because the distortion was added during the mixing (we recorded our guitar tracks clean). So you could easily listen to Part One, and then imagine the same distortion on Part Two.

However, I can provide more links to confirm these existed.

I appreciate your efforts on this one, but seems like even if it's metal, there isn't really a valid release here such as the site defines it.
