if a band is offering "1/3/5/8 tracks" for free, to anyone who gives them their email, is that a release that can be added on the archives? it's somewhere between a promo and a "supporters only" release...

sorries if it's been asked before :/

Depends on two factors. First, if the mailing list is open to anyone who wants to join (in other words, the public). It can't just be a private mailing list whose participants are personally selected by the band or its agent, otherwise the release would be a private release. Second, the release has to be an actual album release, not just random tracks given out as previews/teasers. The track list of that release must be fixed.

well, the mailing list is open to everyone, but it's never an album. usually either "half the songs off our new album", or a compilation of songs. they're intended to give prospective fans a taster of the band... sometimes it's "radio edits".

sometimes they do have unique artwork, or even a pdf booklet, or a title along the lines of "(...) album sampler" or "5 song EP". the traclisting is almost always fixed.
