I'm sure this has been asked on the Forums before, however there is something puzzling me in regards to the User Rankings on this site.

I understand that with the more points you accumulate, the higher you progress as a user (eg. Veteran to Metal Freak to Metal Knight etc.). However I have noticed that there are some inconsistencies, for example there are users who are Metal Knights who only have 3000 points (which means they should actually be a Veteran).

Can someone explain this to me, did these users do something or pay a fee for this privilege.

Metal knight is a staff-appointed ranking, so you can have that with any point total.

No. I don't think it's even tempting for webmasters to think about handing out the rank at a price. If I'm not mistaken Midnight Rider and Storm of the Light's Bane were the last ones to be appointed knights, and both had only recently started contributing; however, although I'm not staff, I knew I could rely on them from day 1. That's what it's about, I guess.

No rank can be bought. Anyone who didn't earn and deserve their rank would be beaten up and stuffed into a trash can by Diamhea within a few hours of fucking things up on the site.

Metal Knights are appointed.
-Former mods (i.e. BlackFlag, Drowned, Halloween)
-Users who have consistently demonstrated good work on the report queue, who can now "close" reports rather than marking them as "resolved" as well as use some tools for merging existing entries (i.e. Antioch, Midnight Rider)
-Certain longtime contributors who we know and trust (i.e. invocator2k, Iggnsthe, Muhammadabbadabba)

The latter tend to not have a ton of points due to not making a high volume of edits, but have some particular specialties and realms they are particularly knowledgeable about.

The fee is slave labour quality contributions to the site.

I thought the fee was just traveling the world and pleasuring the company of mods. Guess I got off easy.

Both MR and I were appointed knights back in October, so you are probably right.

How often are knights appointed?

The Unhinged was back in October as well - that's been it until today. We appoint when we feel the time is right to do so.

The long and short of it. A moderator puts up a candidate for nomination. We discuss it among staff and come to a team decision. If approved, an administrator will step in and promote the user. We currently have 41 knights (17 are former mods). In the last few years, we've appointed around 5 or so users per year.
