Is it possible to have the same person listed under "band members" playing one instrument, and also listed under "guest/session" playing a different instrument? Because the latter instrument (under guest/session) was recorded when the person was no longer in the band, whereas the former instrument (under band members) was recorded while the person was an active member.
Or do both instrument roles have to be under only one category, but not both separately?

What is the album in question? If listing the one musician under two categories is the most accurate way of documenting the information, I'd be reluctant to say no. In which case, a note would be important. But could we also say that while a decision may have already been made, the recording of the latter instrument was simply the musician finishing off his last works before leaving the band? If so, then putting both under band members seems reasonable.

In this case it's my black metal band's yet-to-be released debut album. The musician recorded his bass parts as a member, and then left the band (in 2019). Afterwards, he agreed to record vocals (from scratch) as a session vocalist (in 2020). That's why it would be most accurate to add him as member for bass, and session musician for vocals.

No problem, that will be fine to add the same musician under separate categories. A note such as "X musician played bass for this album as a band member, but left the band before the final release. He later recorded vocals as a session musician." should be sufficient.
