I think it would be cool if this site included lists, such as the 50 greatest death metal, black metal, power metal, thrash metal, etc. bands.

It won't happen. Lists are subjective, 99% of metalheads wouldn't agree with those lists.

yes

Sorry to tell, but as I underground Black Metal fan, I like obscure bands and I'm sure most of the bands I like would not appear on this list

Everyone has different tastes

This is probably the closest you're going to get to lists on the site:
http://metal-archives.com/stats.php

Uses actual stats to form the (albeit only 10 items long) lists. Lists such as greatest [genre of metal] band are different for each user and would be biased if it were for the entire site.

There would be set criteria for lists, using impact, influence, and popularity. Those three are really the only way for lists to be objective.

And how are you going to go about measuring this impact and influence? Even popularity is seriously pushing it.

We tried something like that once in the moderators' forum... trust me, it doesn't work.

From Digitaldreamdoor:

Popularity: Album sales, chart positions, concert ticket sales.

Impact: Peer respect, initial and lasting impact within the world of metal. Cultural impact is a plus, because not many metal bands have it.

Influence: How replicated their sound is across the spectrum of metal.
