I was looking at the Deep Purple site and I was surprised to find that Gillan's solo band was not in the archives.

First off, Gillan was in TWO bands after he left Deep Purple. The first was "The Ian Gillan Band," which was a sort of jazz-fusion experimental thing... definitely doesn't belong in the archives.

However, "Gillan," his second solo stink before rejoining Purple, must certainly be considered... there's some really great British heavy metal on these albums... MR UNIVERSE was a bit AOR-ish, but then the albums get heavier, with GLORY ROAD, FUTURE SHOCK, DOUBLE TROUBLE and MAGIC having some undeniable ripping metal tracks. Also, Janick Gers from Iron Maiden cut his teeth on this band starting with DOUBLE TROUBLE... when he took it about as far as he could, he jumped ship and went to join Black Sabbath... that should tell you the mindset of these albums for sure.

So what say you?

Machine Head is heavier than all the Gillan albums I own...
Also, mentioning Janick Gers shouldn't help that much either. White Spirit wasn't exactly one of the most heavy bands of the NWOBHM. And the first Bruce Dickinson album isn't that heavy either.

Gillan used to be in the archives some years ago, till it was agreed it didn't belong.

Given some of the other solo bands that have been added lately, it should fit. But there's been an outcry over those bands so I think a slight rule change might be on the horizon.

None of Gillan's solo material even approaches metal though, most of it is funk-influenced rock or even soft rock.
