How about reading the rules - only that kind of metalcore, that is hearably more death or thrash metal than core, is allowed. Otherwise we consider metalcore to be similar garbage, because, as one Last.FM user nicely put it, we are elitist fags who cannot acknoledge the beauty and importance of jumpdafuckup music for the metal scene (or more likely, because we use some common sense and do not want old school metalheads to turn their back on the site.)

We do NOT accept the following (this is our decision, please don't argue this):

* Mallcore, also known as "nu-metal" by some (ex: Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Drowning Pool, Slipknot)
* Metalcore, unless it's clearly more metal than core (e.g Shadows Fall, The Red Chord, Mastodon are OK: Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine are NOT). If you are uncertain, best avoid metalcore bands altogether.

If the accepted metalcore bands are hearably more death or thrash metal, why are so many of these bands just credited as metalcore in the genre section of their MA profile?

Hearably does not equal massively.

1. We think that is should be clear enough, because the rules state clearly, which kind of metalcore is acceptable.
2. Metalcore is not a favourite genre among the staff here, so they do not feel the need the examine its nuances closely, beyond the "acceptable" and "non-acceptable" metalcore. As MMisanthropo said, the genre should give you an general idea, which is often enough.
3. What Corimngul said.

Mainly, I would attribute this to lazy submitters of bands.

Take a fairly famous band, Killswitch Engage say. They are attributed as simply being "metalcore", genre-wise.

However, in their Jesse Leach-era (with the old vocalist) they were definitely a post-thrash/metalcore band ala Lamb of God. In their two newest releases, they have become more melodic and much less "edgy" in their sound, thus likely earning them a genre tag of "melodic metalcore".

Buuuut, people are lazy. C'est la vie. In any case, I organise much of my music on WMP in different ways then MA does with certain bands (KsE, Ihsahn, Opeth, Cradle of Filth, Rotting Christ, Finntroll and a shitload of other "viking" metal bands [which should all really just be termed folk metal and then other genre tags alongside then, like black, death, doom or whatever]). It's simply the nature of this site though - it does an excellent job of getting people a basic idea of certain bands, but from there it is very much open to personal interpretation.

Hope that helps.

cheers,

I don't really agree with that statement at all, viking metal is distinct from folk metal, and should be shown as such. However, it's your tagging system. Personally I have everything simply listed as metal or rock, but that's because I don't like the clutter of long multi-genre tags.
