I posted this over a year ago and let it go because it was never addressed. But after seeing the recent genre change of Rush to solely "progressive rock", I can't help but bring it up again. When I think of progressive rock, I think of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. Alex Lifeson's riffs are far heavier than those of the bands mentioned, so simply labeling them as "progressive rock" doesn't seem right. Again, I think the "progressive metal/rock" tag would do much justice as the band was arguably the first to combine the two genres cohesively and their final album, Clockwork Angels, fits this descriptor as well. Thanks.

This might be a controversial post, but I'm just curious...

Why is Rush's genre "Hard Rock/Heavy Metal (early), Progressive Rock (later)"? I only ask because by having it as such, it seems to me it's referring to their debut as being the former (which I agree with) and the remainder of their career being progressive rock since they went prog on Fly by Night. That said, I never considered Rush's output from Fly by Night to Hemispheres to be progressive rock as the riffs are too heavy. Personally, I consider these albums the beginnings of progressive metal. From then on, it seems they strode the line, with future albums leaning towards progressive rock and a few metal songs here and there. That is until Clockwork Angels which returns to the progressive metal sound, but I digress. Could Rush's genre be changed to "Progressive Metal/Rock"? Here are a handful of songs that could warrant this genre change. If not, I understand. Thank you...

We had a discussion on this recently, and a vast majority of the staff agreed with just "Progressive Rock" and not tagging them as metal in general. After all, Rush isn't listed for actually being metal, but as a selected exception.

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation Storm.

Knuckle Dragger's genre is fine, except I think Hardcore should be added to the tag; their three releases prior to the new ep were very hardcore, and less so death metal. So "Powerviolence/Grindcore/Hardcore/Death Metal."

Agoraphobic Nosebleed's genre is fine except Cybergrind needs to be added to the Grindcore tag (Cybergrind/Grindcore, Sludge/Doom Metal). They play more straightforward grind on Honky Reduction and Agorapocalypse, but are far more on the electronic cyber side of grind on Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope and--especially--Altered States of America.

Full of Hell's genre makes sense, somewhat, but they definitely play powerviolence and noise on their newest album. Might it just be better to condense the genre to "Powerviolence/Grindcore/Death Metal, Noise" (since the noise is played separate from the main genre, such as single tracks or segments of songs, or like the full EPs) and write in the notes that they shifted to a more deathgrind sound on their last two albums?

I've also seen that Slam has been added as a genre, and here are four band's that fit this tag:

I'm not really sure why Noctem has thrash in their genre; they've just sounded like Melodic Black/Death their entire discography.

Spirit Possession sounds like first wave black metal, so I think Black Metal + something else fits them better because they certainly aren't pure "black metal."
* https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Sp ... 3540462766
* https://spiritpossession.bandcamp.com/album/2020-demo

Inhuman Nature is definitely defined as "crossover" on their new album. They have some crossover elements, with more hardcore elements on their first EP; vice versa on their new album. So, Thrash Metal/Crossover/Hardcore should be fine.

Tore Fagerheim is an artist I've been meaning to bring up for a while now. His full length album, which got him accepted, was pure Melodic Death Metal; however, he needs additional tags. He ventures into pure Metalcore at times. He also has many singles, of many different styles. I think his genre needs to be extended to "Melodic Death Metal, Metalcore, Various." I think the comma works better because he ventures between the really melodic melodies and then into harsh palmuting; not really musically combining the two at the same time.

Also, I think Rambo Hates Rainbows needs a slight addition, too. They released a Noisecore album in the middle of their discography, so "Black/Sludge/Doom Metal, Noisecore, Electronic." Of the few releases they have, it's the only other full length and the second longest release, so it's a legitimate style they've played. I can't find the first demo, but it included all three styles as well separately.

I saw it go back and forth in the rejection forum and thought they sounded interesting. It was originally uploaded as Black Metal/Black 'n' Roll then changed to Black Metal/Punk, but accurately it's Black Metal/Crust Punk.

I'm really sorry about this one, guys. Picha's early tag is mildly incorrect; the grindcore/noise early tag as it is would be accurate for a band like Full of Hell or Hatred Surge, but these two releases merit it two different genres: Noisegrind/Gorenoise. Both are uniquely different and are heavily incorporated in both. The noisegrind aspect of it incorporates heavy noise over grind riffs while having an odd uniqeness to it (like Anal Cunt or ShitFuckingShit's first album: https://shitfuckingshit.bandcamp.com/al ... -2006-2007). The gorenoise aspect is seen in parts of the first release and heavily in the second, where it is essentially harsh noise wall-grind, or basically goregrind with the gain and level turned up all the way. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyR9G-IALWA) those two samples/examples lay out the difference in the two and show how it is present in the early tag for Picha.
* https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Picha/3540427636
* https://picha.bandcamp.com/album/carepicha
* https://picha.bandcamp.com/album/culiando-renalmente

Gatecreeper are known for having started the hardcore influenced death metal and consistently incorporate it as a secondary genre. I'm not a huge fan of the influences/elements genre tag, but I think adding hardcore as one or the other is appropriate in this case. The hardcore sound is too representative to completely ignore for them.

* https://gatecreeper.bandcamp.com/album/ ... epravation
* https://gatecreeper.bandcamp.com/album/gatecreeper

Death to Honor (pre-Waking the Cadaver) are just listed as "death metal." It's definitely not the slamming brutal stuff they played once they changed their name, but it's still very hardcore influenced, so I'd suggest Death Metal/Hardcore or Death Metal/Deathcore. They don't "slam;" they just play death metal with hardcore influenced chugging.

I love that this band is on here, but why is their genre funk rock? They play Funk Metal, a sub genre of Alternative Metal. They sound far less like Betty Davis and Funkadelic and more like Primus, Precious Death (who I just realized and am surprised are on this site), and The Beyond. I understand that you guys may be wanting to distinctly have this look as a side-project exception, but realistically funk metal is not acceptable on this site, besides some of the funky stuff Faith No More and Mr. Bungle do, so there really isn't harm is changing it. There's also a handful of funk metal genre tags on this site, which are funk/X acceptable metal genre, but it's not a stretch. I think Hexecutor's latest album, Beyond Any Human Conception of Knowledge..., warrants a genre change to "black/thrash metal". This was brought up a couple years ago and turned down as it was found to be thrash with harsh vocals. However, the riffs and atmosphere on this latest release have a lot in common with Nifelheim, Absu, and Destroyer 666, among others.

Ok, I'm not going to open up another report for Lacuna Coil because the one was just recently closed, so I will post here about the genre change. It was changed from Gothic Metal/Rock (early); Alternative Rock (later) to just Alternative Rock/Metal, which is fine but it is not a completely correct tag since their early stuff was indeed gothic. I didn't post the samples from that era because I thought there was no need for it, as I thought we were all in consensus about it. But I guess I was wrong, so that was a mistake on my part. Here are the samples, so you can verify that their early stuff is indeed gothic:

They're one of the most prominent gothic metal bands (at least on their early material); I assume the removal of that particular tag was a mistake. It's been reverted now.

Is there a reason Twisted Sister doesn't have Glam as part of their genre descriptor? Some of their early work vacillates between Heavy Metal and Sleaze Rock, but You Can't Stop Rock'n'Roll and Love Is for Suckers are both pure Glam Metal.

Should Peste Noire really be labelled as just black metal? They (or Famine rather) have included punk, folk, rap, electronic and a whole bunch of other out there stuff that makes them one of the most unique bands in all metal, not just black metal.

"Black metal" really does not do the band justice.

Seeing that RYM recognizes Viking Rock as a music genre, I would like to petition for two bands to have their respective Viking Rock periods recognized: Enhärjarna and Carcereduro

In the past, I submitted a report for Enhärjarna that the band's early work wasn't accurately reflected in the genre field. In my view, the field should read: Oi!/Viking Rock (early); Heavy/Power Metal (later)

Acoustic and wind instruments played in conjunction with Metal are prerequisite to even remotely merit being classified as Folk Metal, and the music from those Metal albums lack any trace of Folk music save the gang shouts which could come from any genre:

In the case of Carcereduro, their discography is consistently Viking Rock mixed with Folk Metal, although the latter two are much more metallic than the first album. The band even calls their own music French Viking Rock:

Viking Rock, called Vikingarock in Swedish, describes an Oi!-influenced subgenre of Punk Rock that emerged in Sweden during the early 1990s. Viking Rock bands commonly use electric Punk instrumentation with the occasional blending of acoustic instruments influenced by Swedish Folk Music. The music is characterized by energetic, catchy melodies and sing-along choruses. Vocals are often sung clean but shouted aggressively. Lyrics frequently take thematic imagery from 19th century Viking romanticism, Norse mythology, Scandinavian history and epic battles.

I think it's safe to say that Aborym no longer plays Industrial Black Metal. Their 2017 Album was a stretch and more akin to Industrial Rock/"metal" a la Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Skinny Puppy. And if their newest single for their 2021 album is anything to off of, it's all but cemented. i think adding Industrial Black Metal (early), Industrial Rock/Metal (later) would be far more accurate.

Agreed. I believe that "avant-garde black metal" or "experimental black metal" would fit the band's music better.

I made a report for this but it was closed. However, I really insist that Soilwork is no longer metalcore.

https://www.metal-archives.com/report/v ... /show/mine

I explained a lot already in that report, but I'd like some more discussion. Maybe I can hear an argument for The Living Infinite having notable metalcore elements but it's very small, and negligible in my opinion. The Ride Majestic, Verkligheten, and A Whisp of the Atlantic have next to zero metalcore in it. Also, bands like MyGrain are similar in that they have metalcore influence but it's negligible in the genre field.

I know it makes the genres more complicated, but you cannot convince me that Soilwork's most recent material is metalcore. If Scar Symmetry isn't even labeled as metalcore, then Soilwork's recent material also shouldn't be either. So I still think the genre should be something like this:

Melodic Death Metal (early), Metalcore/Alternative Metal/Rock (mid), Melodic Groove Metal (Later). Like I said on the report, I'd also be in favor of the later genres being "progressive/melodic groove metal" since Soilwork has had progressive elements since Living Infinite and it shows the most on A Whisp of the Atlantic.

Btw the albums of theirs for consideration are posted on the report.

Dude, do I really have to repeat myself? The current genre tag is just fine.

Ninten, when a mod closes a report of yours because they disagreed with it, writing a post about the same exact thing on the forum is definitely not the thing to do and reflects badly on you.

So, I was listening to Hammerschmitt today, specifically their self-titled full-length album, and it sounds mostly like power metal to me, though it's only tagged as heavy metal. There is some heavy metal sound in there, but to my ears it's primarily power metal, so at least a heavy/power metal tag would be more appropriate, I think. Link to the full album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtsPwPSerfo

Arcane from the US are tagged as heavy/progressive metal, but to me they sound like power/thrash metal to me. I hear quite some Helstar in their sound.

Ire from Canada is labelled "Progressive/Death/Doom/Sludge Metal/Crust" despite having no elements of death or prog at all. The fact they play slow doesn't mean they play prog, and they have no death metal riffs.

A more fitting genre label would be "Metalcore/Sludge Metal/Crust Punk," because they have a mostly first-wave metalcore based sound, but slower, with lots of crust and doom influences (like in bands such as Dystopia, Skaven, Sea of Deprivation, etc).

examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibPFsBey3BY (shit quality, but it's audible)

Hello
There are few of bands from the 625 Thrashcore roster which should have the powerviolence tag since most of them sound clearly like powerviolence and are often considered part of the powerviolence scene:

Emetic
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Emetic/3540367435
The Punk Rock MBA, who is a YouTuber who seems to know his share about punk rock and was a lot into the original pv scene in the 90s mentions them as an example of pv
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5HT2V1loQ4
They sound a lot like pv:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8QyJZopPu0

Plutocracy
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Plutocracy/21368
Their albums are often considered to be powerviolence
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... ping-pigz/
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... dankstahz/
https://www.discogs.com/Plutocracy-Dank ... ter/375919
The first two examples I listened to from one of their records:
https://youtu.be/dBJt0E6jYwU?t=304
https://youtu.be/dBJt0E6jYwU?t=198
The Punk Rock MBA also mentions them as a pv band

Utter Bastard
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ut ... ard/115798
Again often considered pv:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... r_bastard/
And they have very pv sounding releases:
https://utterbastard.bandcamp.com/album/beer-picnic-ep
https://utterbastard.bandcamp.com/album ... everywhere
They also label themselves powerviolence.
Their genre could have the the Punk tag replaced, like so:
Death Metal/Grindcore/Powerviolence

GAZ-66 Intrusion
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/GA ... 3540437761
This is very powerviolence:
https://gaz-66intrusion.bandcamp.com/
https://gaz-66intrusion.bandcamp.com/al ... idetracked
Again they label themselves powerviolence.

Deadbodieseverywhere
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/De ... where/3543
Considered pv:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... verywhere/
The first release in this discography video is already clearly pv:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjkXLoKWWVQ
https://youtu.be/AjkXLoKWWVQ?t=502

Thanks

Okay so I wanted to bring this here to discuss, rather than file a report.

Sea of Treachery and it's previous name, At Daggers Drawn, are labeled differently genre wise. This bothers me a bit since At Daggers Drawn's sole album is the almost the same as Sea of Treachery's debut since Sea of Treachery's debut is a re-release of At Dagger's Drawn's album (with the exception of a few songs, which are the exact same style anyway). I am aware though that Sea of Treachery has another album which could make it be labeled differently than At Dagger's Drawn, so I decided to take a listen.

GuardAwakening suggested some time ago that the genre should be melodic deathcore/metalcore. I disagree with this; I hear no deathcore in their sound at all. Their first album might sound similar to As Blood Runs Black in multiple ways but to me it's missing that "deathcore" sound. It honestly sounds closer to The Crimson Armada's debut, which isn't deathcore, but melodic death metal/metalcore, which is also what the page for At Dagger's Drawn is labeled as. Their second album, however, is closer to a general metalcore sound, but the melodeath influences are still there. I definitely don't hear any deathcore in that one either. (For the record, their 2007 demo is negligible since those songs were used in their debut, and sound exactly like the rest of the album).

I'd suggest labeling Sea of Treachery as "melodic death metal/metalcore" just like their old band name is. I think that sums up their discography well enough.

Here's Sea of Treachery's Spotify page that contains their two albums: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3p4wAte ... NOO6uJAtOw
Sea of Treachery's page: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Se ... ery/117275
At Dagger's Drawn's page: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/At ... awn/117260

Bumping since it's been two months and the new album is out.

Reflection of Glory (USA) should have the genre modified to "Gospel (and/or) Symphonic/Progressive Rock (early), Symphonic/Melodic Power Metal (later), based on his earlier albums:

Teeth are listed as "Death/Doom Metal", yet this is much closer in sound to bands like Gorguts and Ulcerate. Don't really hear any doom in this at all.

Reposting my report on Молат [Molat].

While the Pagan Folk Metal tag is accurate for everything from Пагоняй да новае эры up to and including Бел-а-рок, the band's music switched towards a dark, gritty sounding Heavy/Groove Metal hybrid with hints of Thrash and negligible Folk Metal influences. The album Biełarus Na Varcie barely has any Folk influences apart from the bagpipe-like instrument heard intermittently on some tracks (and rest assured, only three or four tracks feature such instrumentation), and Dum Spiro Spero's traditional instruments begin and end exactly on the intro and outro tracks. The album's substantive tracks feature no Folk influences whatsoever.

Very similar to the Ukrainian band Сокира Перуна.

Lovebites are listed on here as Heavy/Power Metal, but I think a case can be made for adding Thrash to that as well. They've got songs throughout all their records, including the EP they just released less than a week ago, that are total thrash songs with thrash riffing that sometimes borders on melodeath every so often.

Greetings! A note and an update request about Sepulchral Curse. At the moment the genre is listed as Black/Death Metal, but I truly think that it is very misleading genre for the band. I would suggest Blackened Death Metal as the genre, in the vein and idea as how for example Sulphur Aeon, Maveth or Auroch are Blackened Death Metal. Death Metal at the core and heart, but with still has some leanings towards Black Metal. Sepulchral Curse's sound has majority of Death Metal, when you look at the riffs, guitar tone and for example vocals, but still that certain blackish touch. Usually Black/Death Metal indicates the band is split evenly between these two genres like many of the War Metal bands or thematically has strong leaning to both, but with Sepulchral Curse I really can't hear it. To me it is much much more Death Metal to the bone. I hope you folks agree with me on this. Cheers!

Here are couple of links to back my statement:

This was probably discussed previously but don't you think that Alice in Chains probably fits under the Doom metal umbrella as well? Their first album is still a bit more on the side of glam but songs such as "Love, Hate, Love", "I Can't Remember" or "Confusion" are slow and heavy and to me they sound like doom metal. Dirt has more songs like that such as "Hate to Feel" or "Junkhead", and their self-titled is just the biggest example IMO. Their newer stuff and the last couple of songs they recorded with Layne ("Died" and "Get Born Again") fit the genre.

Spoiler: show

Just to name some examples from their classic stuff. Haven't listened that much to their newer stuff so I can't remember any song right now but probably some like "Check My Brain" fit in.

Also, perhaps they should have the "Glam Rock/Metal (early)" (or something similar) tag since their 3 first demos are literally just glam rock and Facelift is still quite similar to that style to my ears.

Spoiler: show

Alright, I think it's due time to update Peste Noire's genre. It doesn't make sense to describe them as pure black metal anymore, and really it hasn't since about "Ballade cuntre lo Anemi francor". What made me think of this again is that their latest single wasn't metal at all, but rather hip hop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lOdqUmUubM

Peste Noire has experimented with a lot of other genres than black metal through their career. Some examples being the french folk music that has been present really all along, the industrial influences and progressive song structures on "L'ordure à l'état pur", the rapping on their self titled album and "La Chaise-Dyable", and the borderline punk and noiserock on the previously mentioned "Ballade". All this doesn't even mention their unconventional way of writting riffs and songs in general. I find it kind of strange that MA has resisted updating KPN for so long when I think they pretty evidently are more tha just black metal
I suggest updating their genre to "black metal (early), avant-garde black metal (later)".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMlSIJQgAsg

I support this. I've listened to a bit of their later stuff as well, as I agree it's way too weird and eclectic to be simplified down to simple black metal.
soverysorry wrote:
Should Peste Noire really be labelled as just black metal? They (or Famine rather) have included punk, folk, rap, electronic and a whole bunch of other out there stuff that makes them one of the most unique bands in all metal, not just black metal.

"Black metal" really does not do the band justice.

I would also like to petition my support for changing Peste Noire's current genre tag. Only the early demos, La sanie des siècles : Panégyrique de la dégénérescence and Folkfuck Folie are pure Black Metal. The rest of KPN's discography is a mix of Avant-Garde Metal and Black Metal with occasional bits of Folk-inspired music. With the latest and least loved release introducing Hip Hop influences, Famine is certainly no stranger to experimentation.

Suggestion: Black Metal (early); Avant-Garde/Experimental/Folk/Black Metal (later)
