if smn has the time, https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/ThanatoSchizo/7476 could use a more detailed genre descr. they include diff styles within their earlier albums, and the more recent ones are more like latter day anathema with Christina Scabbia on vox... (their albums are on most streaming websites, links included on band profile)

Ever since I submitted Barbarus (USA), I felt that calling it pagan/doom metal didn't sound right. I made a report for this, but it got closed without any comment. I still can't put my finger on exactly what would be more accurate, but this is certainly not doom metal (imo). I just wrote that hoping someone would come up with something better.

So anyway, here are the albums on Bandcamp:
Barbarus I (+ instrumental version)
Into the Distant Light

Bumping this from the last page.

I think calling this band just Sludge Metal doesn't really do it justice.

I am aware that this is an early bump, however, I also know that sometimes edits get lost in the mix.

Additionally,

https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Th ... ack/114369

This needs some kind of update.

https://theriverrunsblack.bandcamp.com/releases

It's not black metal really much at all. Post metal of some variety. Kinda Neurosis-y.

Pathogenic from Lowell, Massachusetts is most certainly not groove metal. Between their first album from 2011 and their new one that just came out, the closest thing I can say to describe them accurately would probably be progressive deathcore.

Their latest album switches between deathcore/progressive metal/technical death metal/djent
I would re-label their latest style "Progressive Metal/djent" or "Extreme Progressive Metal/djent".

These are just my two cents, as the aothor of the original reports. Thanks to whoever proposed any modifications, though.

Let Us Prey is listed as metalcore, although their one EP "The Saint of Killers" really doesn't have anything metalcore on it. For the most part it's a thrash/melodic death metal hybrid release.

ThStealthP, you seem to be pretty off-point on these recommendations with bands I'm familiar with. You should probably stop suggesting changes if they're going to be relatively minor, unnecessary, and often inaccurate.

While Necrophobic is a melodic band, they are most certainly also a death metal band - the current genre (death/black metal) is correct and does not need to be changed. Cattle Decapitation are not goregrind. The Sins of Thy Beloved don't need "death" added to their genre for the small amount of death metal (rather, doom/death) in their gothic/doom metal style.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed's genre is fine except Cybergrind needs to be added to the Grindcore tag (Cybergrind/Grindcore, Sludge/Doom Metal). They play more straightforward grind on Honky Reduction and Agorapocalypse, but are far more on the electronic cyber side of grind on Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope and--especially--Altered States of America.

Full of Hell's genre makes sense, somewhat, but they definitely play powerviolence and noise on their newest album. Might it just be better to condense the genre to "Powerviolence/Grindcore/Death Metal, Noise" (since the noise is played separate from the main genre, such as single tracks or segments of songs, or like the full EPs) and write in the notes that they shifted to a more deathgrind sound on their last two albums?

* https://neurotrecordings.bandcamp.com/a ... ike-i-ache (Another one off collaboration that fits the noise and powerviolence in the later style)

I discovered Gutalax needs a slight change to their genre: Goregrind/Grind 'n' Roll. Or maybe "Goregrind, Grind 'n' Roll" since it seems to bounce between the two styles separately.

I'm not really sure why Noctem has thrash in their genre; they've just sounded like Melodic Black/Death their entire discography.

Inhuman Nature is definitely defined as "crossover" on their new album. They have some crossover elements, with more hardcore elements on their first EP; vice versa on their new album. So, Thrash Metal/Crossover/Hardcore should be fine.
* https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/In ... 3540431445
* https://inhumannature.bandcamp.com/album/inhuman-nature

Tore Fagerheim is an artist I've been meaning to bring up for a while now. His full length album, which got him accepted, was pure Melodic Death Metal; however, he needs additional tags. He ventures into pure Metalcore at times. He also has many singles, of many different styles. I think his genre needs to be extended to "Melodic Death Metal, Metalcore, Various." I think the comma works better because he ventures between the really melodic melodies and then into harsh palmuting; not really musically combining the two at the same time.

Also, I think Rambo Hates Rainbows needs a slight addition, too. They released a Noisecore album in the middle of their discography, so "Black/Sludge/Doom Metal, Noisecore, Electronic." Of the few releases they have, it's the only other full length and the second longest release, so it's a legitimate style they've played. I can't find the first demo, but it included all three styles as well separately.
* https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ra ... 3540407237
* https://8bitexternal.bandcamp.com/album ... ship-grind

I'm really sorry about this one, guys. Picha's early tag is mildly incorrect; the grindcore/noise early tag as it is would be accurate for a band like Full of Hell or Hatred Surge, but these two releases merit it two different genres: Noisegrind/Gorenoise. Both are uniquely different and are heavily incorporated in both. The noisegrind aspect of it incorporates heavy noise over grind riffs while having an odd uniqeness to it (like Anal Cunt or ShitFuckingShit's first album: https://shitfuckingshit.bandcamp.com/al ... -2006-2007). The gorenoise aspect is seen in parts of the first release and heavily in the second, where it is essentially harsh noise wall-grind, or basically goregrind with the gain and level turned up all the way. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyR9G-IALWA) those two samples/examples lay out the difference in the two and show how it is present in the early tag for Picha.
* https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Picha/3540427636
* https://picha.bandcamp.com/album/carepicha
* https://picha.bandcamp.com/album/culiando-renalmente

Gatecreeper are known for having started the hardcore influenced death metal and consistently incorporate it as a secondary genre. I'm not a huge fan of the influences/elements genre tag, but I think adding hardcore as one or the other is appropriate in this case. The hardcore sound is too representative to completely ignore for them.

I just realized that Infectious Grooves is on here and think that's awesome, but why is their genre funk rock? They play Funk Metal, a sub genre of Alternative Metal. They sound far less like Betty Davis and Funkadelic and more like Primus, Faith No More, and The Beyond. I would even say in the same vein as Scatterbrain, but that's a topic for another time (unless someone else thinks that "heavy" should be replaces with "Alternative").

RRegarding Infectious Grooves: I think, that since I was a part of the staff back when Infectious Grooves was added,I think, that I can mention here, that the band was added strictly as a side project of Mike Muir. So their music is ont cconsidered metal by the site's own definition of the genre and is considred funk rock for the same reason that bands like Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Heads UP arenot considered metal metal by the site's rules and are not included here. I agree, that the current genre is not ideal and perhaps funk rock/crossover would be better, but to label it purely as funk metal would be imo a retreat from the site's own principles, which are vested in the written rules and guidelines. I consider it to be more of genral problem of the inclusion of non-metal bands as a side projects on the site, but that's an eentirely different problem, wich would need its own discussion.It would be certainly exhaustive to write on every side project's page "This band was accepted strictly as a side project of a musician XY."

Well, it does state in the rules that genres regarded as metal such as Nu-Metal, Alternative Metal, and Glam Metal are genres that are not considered metal to this site. In the event of an acceptable Nu-Metal side project being added, it'd be labeled as "Nu-Metal" and everyone would still complain. Funk Metal is a subgenre of Alternative Metal making it a "metal genre that is not metal" to this site, which is stated in the rules. And still, Infectious Grooves plays the same style as Primus and Heads Up (the Chili Peppers are a bad example; they play alternative/funk/hard rock and rarely venture into funk metal), and none of those bands are technically acceptable to this site but Infectious is allowed to slide due to the side project rule.

Storm of the Light's Bane, thanks for updating Dark Psychosis.

Regarding the band Mortem, it's listed as death metal.

Listening to a song from their new album, this sounds black metal to me, sounds like Arcturus for obvious reasons. Maybe I am crazy, I'd like to know what others think of it:

Storm of the Light's Bane sent me here for this.
I feel like Haemorrhage have kind of left Goregrind in favour of a more traditional Grindcore sound with a bit more of a Death Metal edge.
This change is already appearing in 2011's Hospital Carnage (this one still retains some Goregrind elements) but finally got cemented with 2017's We Are the Gore, if we only take full lengths into account.
I'd suggest Goregrind (early), Grindcore/Death Metal (later) to be more accurate.

Is Shelder really Doom Metal? If you ask me, they sound like what would happen if Heart tried their hand at Heavy Metal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pKM9DC44Ac

The Doom Metal influences are too minor, but if you insist on having them there, at least acknowledge the Hard Rock influences.

Suggestions: Heavy Metal/Hard Rock or Heavy/Doom Metal with Hard Rock influences.

Technical/Symphonic Blackened Death Metal

Discography:

Been meaning to add death metal to their tag for a while, guess I never got around to it? Simply added death metal. Symphonic is kinda overkill, and they're pretty clearly too black metal for just blackened.

https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Netherbird/68122

Listed as Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal.
However, if for their early releases it was true (and they were sounding like Illnath, for exemple), they haven't had any symphonic elements in their music for already three albums. It's still melodic black metal but now with melodic death elements similar to Dissection, Naglfar etc.
So, I'd propose either to change it to Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal (early), Melodic Death/Black Metal (later) or just to exclude Symphonic tag (in the end, both early and late releases are melodic black metal without any doubts, though a little bit different).

Proofs:
Early sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZQG8aTcRyQ
Late sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXlyGd_ ... WE&index=4

The Haunted
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/The_Haunted/85

Listed Melodic Death / Groove Metal, no mention to Thrash Metal.

As I stated in my (unanswered) report:

There is a lot of thrash metal in the sound of the haunted. Their sound evolved from blend of thrash metal and melodic death metal, a sort of continuation of the slaughter of the soul sound but even more thrashy, without the heavy downtuned guitars and the death metal element.
Then on the albums The Dead Eye, Versus and Unseen they went more in the groove metal direction, while the thrashy elements came back in the last two albums.

I dunno if it would be better to put melodic death/thrash metal (early), melodic death / groove metal (later) or simply melodic death/ thrash / groove metal, but the thrash metal factor cannot be ignored.

Source/Evidence:
first album, check songs 1 2 4 7 9 11

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... D0YmYlp1BA

Second album, check songs 2 6 7 9 11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bU1a9BL ... zWLfkYURjD

These songs are only examples from their first two albums, but there are plenty in their discography. In my opinion people thinks they are not thrash metal because of the massive use of octaves instead of power chords, but take any of the songs i mentioned and play it with power chords instead of octaves, and there you have a classic thrash metal guitar riff.

Furthermore, compare The Haunted some bands in the Similar Artists section. Take for example Dimension Zero, you have a band with 100% melodic death metal riffs and thrash metal uptempos, and they're labeled melodic death/thrash metal. Compare The Haunted and Carnal Forge, they're very similar in riff structures but Carnal Forge is labeled thrash and The Haunted not.

To close my points I would say that if The Haunted folded after the first four albums, they would have never been labeled Groove, but Thrash. The Dead Eye, Versus and Unseen are a lot more groovy but those three albums alone aren't enough to exclude the importance of thrash metal in The Haunted's career.

Morbid Symphony
Death Metal (early) Death/Gothic Metal (later)
Pure Old school death metal until the full length which contains keyboards and clean vocals as a big part of the album. I think death/gothic metal best describes this sound altough I'm not 100% sure.

https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Swamps/3540355109

Band recently brought up in the "Bands that should be removed" thread and while I agree that the band should stay, I think the genre needs a bit of addressing.

https://swampsma.bandcamp.com/album/seven-sides

This is what the band was accepted on and even later albums, it gets chuggier. I think it needs "hardcore" in it's genre description or even groove metal. I'm not even sure if "crossover" works. This shares a lot more in common with bands that mix beatdown hardcore with groove metal and "South of Heaven" than most "crossover" acts, in my opinion.

I feel like Whitechapel should have nu-metal, or at least groove metal added to their genre label. On their recent stuff, even their breakdowns got closer to something like nu-metal and not core. They definitely don’t have much death metal influence anymore.

https://whitechapelmetal.bandcamp.com/track/brimstone
https://whitechapelmetal.bandcamp.com/t ... -the-blade
https://whitechapelmetal.bandcamp.com/track/venomous

Sounds like something Slipknot would do.

Even with the new album, the vocals alone are still very related to deathcore.

Well, this site judges bands on the music and not the vocals...

I'm no moderator, but I can definitely lend my two cents. Anyone who wants mp3s can message me.

Re: Godnightdream. It's definitely not strictly Heavy Metal, but I wouldn't throw out the descriptor entirely. It's Modern Metal which intersects with so many genres rather than strictly conforming to one convention. I'd call it an intriguing mix of Groove, Thrash, Gothic and Epic Heavy Metal with the occasional Funk/slap bass. Witcher's pretty close to the mark, but some refinement could help nail down this band's genre.

The more I listen to it, the more I'm convinced Godnightdream is Progressive Metal, especially when you consider the Jazz fusion bits at the end. I think that would be a good compromise.

I think Blood Incantation's genre needs to be evaluated. "Death Metal" is simply too vague as there is definitely a progressive element present in their music, especially with their upcoming album Hidden History of the Human Race.

"Progressive Death Metal" maybe?

Much like how Mithras is labeled is experimental/brutal death metal, I think Lykathea Aflame should be labeled the same. Progressive/technical brutal death metal sounds like a stretch - which is not a bad thing by any means, but they're considered experimental with these labels in mind. It's not like with their former name, Appalling Spawn, where they had more deathgrind style of music.

I think that Cause for Revelation should have hardcore in their genre.

Normally, I'd probably edit the last post to add this in; but I think this is more important than that.

This one has been bothering me for a while. Why is Hermetica (https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/He ... 9tica/2721) listed as only Thrash Metal? Apart from the first album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q796hC ... sX4lfd81NY and I'd say even that has more of the thrash/speed metal flavor of early Metallica and some straight speed metal and heavy metal tunes), they are mostly a heavy/speed metal band with some thrash riffs strewn about (https://open.spotify.com/artist/6j6Ld5h0aFgH0VQWQNazS7 "Intérpretes", "Ácido argentino", "Víctimas del vaciamiento").

Spotify reccommended this band's latest single and I dunno but this sounds EXTREMELY metalcore to me.

There's literally not one but two straight-up breakdowns in it and it uses the same harsh-clean vocals interplay that bands like As I Lay Dying do--hell, the intro riff sounds like it came straight from AILD's latest album. Even the harsh vocals themselves sound more -core than than they do straight-up metal.

Genre changed.

Sort of sounds just like death metal with a lot of stuff, the first EP has some hardcore isms and slammy-lite stuff, but there's a hodgepodge of stuff just gonna leave it at reg death metal unless another mod wants to work on that one.

Not as overt, but there is defintely a good amount of prog there while still getting that OSDM feel, imo.
