The genre for Sepultura needs to be changed slightly. This is the current version: Death/Thrash Metal (early), Groove/Thrash Metal, Nu-Metal (later). The issue I have is with the last tag: Nu-Metal (later). Sepultura's nu-metal period was not in their late period - it was in their mid period, with albums such as Nation (2001), or Roorback (2003). Sepultura dropped nu-metal influences on their recent records from 2009-present. Albums like The Mediator Between Head and Hands (2013), Machine Messiah (2017), or Kairos (2011) are influenced by groove, thrash, and even some death metal. Therefore, the tag should be adjusted to something like this: Death/Thrash Metal (early), Nu-Metal/Groove Metal (mid), Groove/Thrash/Death (later).

Here are some links that show Sepultura's evolution of sound.

Album - Nation, Song: Sepulnation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiMqW-i8bl8
Album - Against, Song: Choke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLBWlgmR7qk
Album - Roorback, Song: Corrupted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PacgO_tAGss
This shows Sepultura's mid period sound - Nu-Metal and Groove Metal influenced.

Sepultura's recent work:
Album: The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart, Song: Manipulation of Tragedy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CEE4uTCzgM
Album: Kairos, Song: Mask https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSrmSKglkWw
Album: Machine Messiah, Song: I am the Enemy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCEe44CgyAM
Album: The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart, Song: Trauma of War https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5XBAKoEDSc
Sepultura's late period is heavily influenced by thrash metal, groove metal, and some death metal.

Sepultura's late period is NOT nu-metal! This should be adjusted to Death/Thrash Metal (early), Nu-Metal/Groove Metal (mid), Groove/Thrash/Death (later).

Maldicion from Chile needs to have a genre update:
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ma ... iscography

They have just released new material that is of death/black metal variety.

https://soundcloud.com/butacarecords/ma ... del-horror
https://soundcloud.com/butacarecords/ma ... uro-ritual

This is half of the new demo, and my understanding is that they have been playing this style for some time now. I am unfamiliar with the older stuff, but if it is, ineed, death/doom, I recommend gothic/doom metal (early); death/black metal (later)

Though Finntroll are not straight up Black/Folk like Sorgsvart, they have obvious Black and Death influences and it's true (as noted by another user) it could mislead fans of bands Korpiklaani or Alestorm.
They even appear in a book about the history and concept of Black Metal (http://www.elargonauta.com/libros/histo ... 5191-20-9/), and the author is slightly elitistic.
I suggest you change it to Extreme Folk Metal or Folk Metal with Black Metal influences or Folk Metal with Blackened influences, instead of just Folk Metal.

I think the genre (Melodic/Atmospheric Metal) is lacking. Melodic and Atmospheric are mainly used as descriptors of subgenres here, not as subgenres themselves. I may be wrong, though.

Gothic Rock/Metal may work. Have a listen here.

Those that listen to folk talked amongst ourselves. Basically it was up to blackened folk metal or black/folk Metal. black/folk Metal was the agreed upon genre, but I"m doing some more listening and I can't really say there is a big 50/50 of black and folk. So I'ma go a little over my head and go with Blackened Folk.

I think the listing for As Divine Grace is kind of misleading. First of all, their early stuff was never pure death metal. It was romantic, melodic sounding death/doom like My Dying Bride or Paradise Lost. As for their later work, it's incredibly gothic sounding. When I think of "doom rock", I think of Witchcraft or Bloody Ceremony. Their first full-length, Lumo, is pretty standard gothic/doom, whereas Supremature is almost pure gothic rock/shoegaze.

I think it'd be better if their genre were changed to "Doom/Death Metal (early), Gothic/Doom Metal/Rock (later)". The latter is sort of a broad way to cover both Lumo and Supremature.

First EP (doom/death metal):

Lumo (gothic/doom metal):

Supremature (gothic rock):

Yeah, sounds about right.

I'll try to get to the rest of these over the course of the week.

I think classifying Shining as a straight forward Black metal band is wrong. Not because it offends me or something like that, but because I simply think it is wrong. Shining has huge Black metal influence, but there is also doom and some progressive elements in their songs. The use of varying vocal techniques such as growl, shrieks, clean and whispers give better range to their music. Also solos play big role in their sound(I'm not saying there is no solos in BM, but these solos are bit different, more melodic and kinda resemble rock music), use of samples in songs play part in their music and this reminds me of 90s experimental and progressive rock bands. And of course the production value. Black metal is known for lo-fi dirty production ( in general), but Shining really relies on strong and rich production. There are shifts in tempo, dynamics and overall feel of music all the time. They don't feel like your average black metal band. There is some kind of different mood when you listen to Shining compared to something like Vlad Tepes. My last argument will be Niklas' dislike for term Black metal. He once called his music ' Evil fucking music ' or something like that and I kinda get him. For me, calling them Progressive Black Metal or maybe even Progressive Extreme Metal would be closer to describing them than just simply Black metal.

'Proofs':

Change of pace at 1:17 :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhfedoq1JT4

Whole intro( yes there are acoustic guitars and solos in BM,but nothing like this) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U48VHQQDP8o

Middle part with pianos and sampled vocals( and string section) at 1:51 :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5MyNBSu7WQ

Vocal delivery at 1:25 :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scZU2o542LQ

I think this is enough evidence for my case.

Nope. It's definitely not Progressive.
TeskiMetal wrote:

That doesn't mean anything, music-wise.
TeskiMetal wrote:

While that is true, the term "Black Metal" means a certain kind of sound. A kind of sound that, even taking into account the genre's canon, isn't that narrow of a sound. It can descrinbe lots of sounds and there's many, many ways to play Black Metal. To put it clear, Absu, Emperor, Summoning, Bethlehem, and Marduk sound completely different from each other, but all of them are Black Metal, for instance.
TeskiMetal wrote:

Whatever he calls his music is irrelevant. "Black Metal" is accurate enough without splitting hairs on their genre.

Inner Visions is listed as "Melodic Heavy Metal" even though it is clearly just straight Power Metal in the vein of Stratovarius. I honestly hear no heavy metal influence in any of their songs.

This band can have "raw" removed from their genre. I don't really know what that means, but they are just a thrash metal band.

Listed as simply "death metal" but there are a lot of jangly, galloping arpeggio riffs that are definitely closer to Ved Buens Ende than to any sort of death metal. I would call it "Black/Death Metal" or perhaps "Progressive Black/Death Metal".

Ufomammut:

Not Doom Metal at all. This is Psychedelic Stoner Metal at its best, with Sludge Metal influences here and there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPK3llKpqNU

Equilibrium:

I'd reckon having them tagged as Folk/Viking Metal is sufficient. Folk Metal has, up to a point, orchestral elements, so the addition of ''Epic'' is a bit unnecessary.

I think Dub Buk should have its genre updated to "Melodic Black/Pagan Metal (early), Black/Death Metal (later)", as their last album Цвях seems to represent a sharp stylistic change to the latter genre. Riffs are heavier, chuggier, with a lot of tremolo of the kind you'd hear with bands like Behemoth, Belphegor, Panzerchrist, etc.

Hi mods,

Why were all the reports for the genre change of Bufihimat closed without any comments?

http://www.metal-archives.com/report/by-object/type/band/id/3540404250/mode/page

I've seen that 3 reports were made, all of them stating that grindcore tag should be added to the genre. I think they were right, it's not a 'standard' black/death genre, there are grindcore elements along the death metal.

The band's albums can be checked below;
http://bufihimat.bandcamp.com/

Thanks for your reply!

Check the edit history. Grindcore was there in the past and Azmodes removed it, along with the rest of what appeared to be an "excessive" genre listing, to put it lightly.

Just chiming in here that my edit is from 2015, so I think it had to do with removing the (later) because it wasn't based on any then-released material. If there is a grind full-length now, never mind my modification.

In this case could you please check their latest release 'I' ?

I think the technical grindcore, or simply grindcore tag should be added to their genre.

Thanks!

The Clearing Path: https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Th ... 3540398891

Listed as "black metal", but there's a whole bunch of weird stuff going on - shrill and dissonant arpeggios à la Deathspell Omega, unconventional time signatures, synth dirges, folk interludes, etc. The similar artists on the band page include Enslaved, Blut aus Nord and Gorguts. I think "Atmospheric/Progressive Black Metal" describes the music better.
