Why are these progressive math metal bands with that "djent" sound not considered metal enough here? Seems kinda stupid as these bands mostly take the sound of Meshuggah who happen to be in the archives and screw around with it. For example, Periphery and TesseracT are not in the archives, what is so "not metal" about this genre??

Allright thanks.

So it's kind of modernized progressive stuff, or as the article almost put it: Meshuggah metal. To answer the original post, there is no MA campaign against this kind of music, it will be judged like anything else. The more metal, the bigger chance of getting accepted. Lots of 'djent' bands are already here, so if those you mentioned (I nrever heard them) have been rejected, they were deemed not metal enough.

Animals as Leaders are on the archives. I think the main reason bands like Periphery and Tesseract are rejected is because they're closer to metalcore/mathcore/dubstep than actual progressive metal.

Djent bands tend to mix a fair bit of dubstep with the other stuff. Heard of djentstep?

No I've never heard of this haha. But I think it would be pretty off to say bands like Periphery or TesseracT is closer to dubstep than metal.

Even though Meshuggah were "accidental progenitors" of djent, There still lies a great difference between Meshuggah's sound, and most Djent (AKA Periphery, Tesseract, Haunted Shores...to name a few). Animals as Leaders and Synthetic Breed are the closest I've heard to Meshuggah's sound, and that's why I believe they are here.

I think Animals as Leaders have almost nothing in common with Meshuggah. Sure there's the occasional palm-muted chords and the syncopated rhythms, but otherwise their style leans very heavily towards progressive metal/fusion instead of metalcore/mathcore. Their album reminds me in part of Gordian Knot's albums. Virtuosic, jazzy, progressive, polystylistic, and most importantly, NOT BORING.

My problem is how you even say the darn word. I've never heard it said before.
Is it like "jent," "dent," "duh-yent," "DJ-ent?" Seriously what is it?

As it's an onomatopoeia of its characteristic muted guitar sound it's probably "jent".

I never understood how they came up with that. It sounds more like a BLURB to me. Or someone belching into a tubescreamer.

I've always called it "zhent."

Yeah it's pronounced jent. Apparently the termed was coined by Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah when he was trying to describe the beginning part of their song Aztec Two-Step.

Djent is cool.. Think of it as prog-metal reaching a different level.

Please don't bump old threads simply to cite an opinion or to repeat what's already been discussed.
