Welcome to the 6th Diamhea Memorial Review Challenge!

Originally the "MA Virgin Reviews Challenge," this is a time-honored tradition among our reviewers here. Every spring and every autumn, reviewers are encouraged to spend a week writing and submitting as many quality reviews as possible, with the aim to focus on albums with no reviews so far (i.e. virgin albums). Every day, the reviews submitted and accepted are tallied, so that participants can see how they compare with one another and whether or not, altogether, we've been able to surpass previous challenges' totals. Previous challenges can be found here.

The challenge is named in memory of our friend Diamhea, a long-time contributor to this challenge and staff member here at Metal Archives, who sadly passed away on May 21, 2018. He was the first person to have ever written 100 reviews for a single challenge!

This challenge will run from Monday Nov 30 @ 12:00AM EST to Sunday Dec 6 @ 11:59PM EST.

The magic number to beat is 609. That was set in May 2009. It's high but we can beat it.
The second magic number to beat is 428. That was the total from the last challenge!

Challenge Rules

1. The focus is on virgin albums.
The only albums that count are those that had zero reviews prior to the challenge.

2. Every release listed on the main site is valid including singles, videos, boxed sets and so on.
However, please try to refrain from mass reviewing singles and 'best of' compilations for this challenge. That's lame.

3. Eligible releases have to be virgins at the beginning of the challenge.
Multiple people can review the same virgin. There’s no bonus for getting to it first, so no need to hurry – focus on quality instead.

4. Eligible reviews must have been written during the challenge.
Pre-listening to albums and taking notes is, of course, fine, but avoid stockpiling already written reviews in advance.

5. Value quality over quantity!
Everyone is welcome to participate, but keep in mind that the mods won't be more lenient during the challenge.

6. The challenge abides by the default time of the site (Eastern Standard time or GMT-5).
Please ensure that you are posting your review(s) within the right time frame in order for them to count.

7. The total number of reviews written will be tallied once a day (under normal circumstances).
Derigin (myself) will kindly do the tallying as soon as possible. Please don't nag him (me).

8. Stay cordial and respectful with one another.
Don't hijack this thread with petty arguments or whining. Remember that the mods are watching (and waiting)...

9. The only reward is our eternal appreciation.
The only prize is knowing that there is an album that previously didn't get any love... that now has a review to call its own.

What is SECRET SATAN? The gist of it is simple. People put their names forward. I randomly match those people with one another. They send each other a virgin to review. They both review one another's respective virgins for the challenge. SECRET SATAN is opt-in and totally optional to the review challenge. You have to put your name forward, either by mentioning it in this thread OR by sending me a PM on the forum. Once I have collected enough names, I'll notify people who their matches are a week before the challenge starts. I'll notify through a forum PM.

Once matched, you must do the following:

Step 1: You will exchange with one another a virgin album for review.
It MUST be an album on this site with no reviews at the time it is shared with the other person.

Step 2: You are required to provide to the other person a link to the album you want him/her to review.
It MUST be available for FREE online and in either a QUALITY DOWNLOAD or QUALITY STREAM. No self-promoting your own albums, thanks!

Step 3: You will review the virgin album you received from the other person for the challenge.
Be prepared for the possibility that it may be well outside your comfort zone. Please remember this is done in good faith!

If you have any problems with the person you're matched with, let me know. I have spare albums for review just in case it doesn't work out.

As mentioned last time, starting with this challenge I'll be changing a few things with the tallying process:

1. Removing the "did not participate" list on daily tallies.
2. Adding a running total for everyone, individually, every day.
3. Noting what release types have been reviewed each day.
4. Tracking the virgin album that was most reviewed during the challenge.
5. Tracking which bands were virgin bands before they got a review during the challenge.

Additionally, moving forward and to keep things interesting, I will be replacing "Secret Satan" with something else for the spring/summer challenge, while keeping it for the autumn/winter challenge. So this time around "Secret Satan" is the same as before, but next spring/summer there will be something different. I am open to ideas, but I'm leaning towards a "Pool Party" idea (eg. getting participants to throw a bunch of albums into a shared pool of virgins, and crediting the participant(s) who review the most out of them). Just a thought.

Looks like I'll be opting out of the SS this time, hopefully the Allied Forces are still hiring. :P

In all seriousness, I'm not sure how much of a contribution I'll make this time, but I'll definitely see what I can do to hopefully help push the cumulative total over the top.

Hell yeah, I've been wondering when this would be announced! I'll probably sit out SS but I'm really excited to bang out some reviews over Christmas.

I haven't participated in one of these in a while so I think I'll give it a go. I'll have to abstain from Secret Satan, but looking forward to finding some cool stuff to review!

Since I have NOTHING better to do right now, I think I'll hop on the review challenge for once. I'm eyeing up a few things that I'm sure I can ramble about.

Yes, and then wash your hands afterwards, I suggest :-P

If Thumbman is out there, when can I expect a Secret Satan?

I had a bunch of drama take place both yesterday and today that kind of hampered my efforts the first day. Managed to crank out a few that I had assigned from Sonic Perspectives, including the Diamond Head review which I technically wrote last night for a Monday premier on said site. I plan on hitting the ground running tomorrow and maybe I'll hit a couple more tonight, but if I were a betting many I'd put money on gasmask running away with this one.

I've got a nice free day today (Tuesday in the US) but after that various stuff will hinder me from making any very large contribution on any given day.

Hopefully some other heavy-hitters will come through, because I don't think I'll be breaking any of my old records this time and we're off to a fairly humble start on cumulative reviews for the first day. Oh well, anything can happen with these things. lol

3 up so far, but I got a handful in the works. I'm also contemplating doing a box set which is going to be a challenge.

Boxsets sort of feel like a discography review with a very strict word limit. Who's that of?

OK, first review written. Don't know how many I'll be able to cram before Sunday, lack of time for in-depth listens these days.

Order From Chaos. I've done some discography run downs on my personal website before, but that's still far too lengthy for a review. As for OFC, I've reviewed both of their full lengths years back, so we'll see what I can figure out for the "Frozen In Steel" box set.

Finally got my first review done and submitted. I don't know how guys like gasmask_colostomy can bash out so many solid reviews in such a short space of time. I always find myself running out of synonyms for brutal and dick-crushing by the fourth paragraph or so.

I think it's probably because I don't listen to anything dick-crushing, thus I still have the potential to rob albums of their virginity beyond that flaccid fourth paragraph. In all honesty, it's tired me out this week, and today (Thursday for me) I've finished one review all day, mostly because I slept like crap yesterday. Hoping to rally again tomorrow and possibly crack 50 by the end of the week.

On a more serious note, can we instate a rule that Eddy Sackbauer can't place top 3 if he gives every album 90%±3?

Got my second review submitted and this time, it's a boxset! I'm playing around with not reviewing any more full-lengths, just that's what everyone's doing and doing way better than I could.

"Aha!" I said. "So that's the trick! Do your best and don't destroy your dick!"

I got excited for this, but quickly realized I'm just not immediately familiar enough with the few albums I had planned to review. I got one up that came out a week ago, which I had planned to review anyways. And I have another release that I'm going to review in the next couple of days that comes out tomorrow, so I guess that will count for a 2nd one, but we'll see if I can knock any others out.

Can't remember if I need to let you guys know or not, but my Nov. 30 entry Totale Vernichtung album review, I re-read it just now, and saw a huge glaring error, so I edited it back for submission

It's probably being written as we speak. Wouldn't surprise me if there's a lot more reviews to catalogue than yesterday and Derigin's still tallying everything up.
