Welcome to the 8th Diamhea Memorial Review Challenge!

Originally the "MA Virgin Reviews Challenge," this is a time-honored tradition among our reviewers here. Every spring and autumn, reviewers are encouraged to spend a week writing and submitting as many quality reviews as possible. The challenge is focused on virgin albums: those with no reviews so far. Every day, the reviews submitted and accepted are tallied, so that participants can see how they compare with one another and whether or not as a group we've been able to beat the accumulative totals. Previous challenges can be found here.

The challenge is named in memory of our friend Diamhea, a longtime contributor to this challenge and staff member here at Metal Archives, who sadly passed away on May 21, 2018. He was the first person to have ever written 100 reviews for a single challenge!

This challenge will run from Monday Nov 29 @ 12:00AM EST to Sunday Dec 5 @ 11:59PM EST.

The magic number to beat is 609. That was set in May 2009. It's high but we can beat it.
The second number to beat is 430. That was the total from the last challenge!

Challenge Rules

1. The focus is on virgin albums.
The only albums that count are those that had zero reviews prior to the challenge.

2. Every release listed on the main site is valid including singles, videos, boxed sets and so on.
However, please try to refrain from mass reviewing singles and 'best of' compilations for this challenge. That's lame.

3. Eligible releases have to be virgins at the beginning of the challenge.
Multiple people can review the same virgin. There’s no bonus for getting to it first, so no need to hurry – focus on quality instead.

4. Eligible reviews must have been written during the challenge.
Taking notes is fine, but avoid stockpiling already written reviews in advance.

5. Value quality over quantity!
Everyone is welcome to participate, but keep in mind that the mods won't be more lenient during the challenge.

6. The challenge abides by the default time of the site (Eastern Standard time or GMT-5).
Please ensure that you are posting your review(s) within the right time frame in order for them to count.

7. The total number of reviews written will be tallied once a day (under normal circumstances).
I will do the tallying as soon as possible. Please don't nag me.

8. Stay cordial and respectful with one another.
Don't hijack this thread with petty arguments or whining. Remember that the mods are watching (and waiting)...

9. The only reward is our eternal appreciation.
The only prize is knowing that there is an album that previously didn't get any love... that now has a review to call its own.

What is SECRET SATAN? The gist of it is simple. People put their names forward. I randomly match those people with one another. They send each other a virgin to review. They both review one another's respective virgins for the challenge. SECRET SATAN is opt-in and totally optional to the review challenge. You have to put your name forward, either by mentioning it in this thread OR by sending me a PM on the forum. Once I have collected enough names, I'll notify people who their matches are a week before the challenge starts. I'll notify through a forum PM.

Once matched, you must do the following:

Step 1: You will exchange with one another a virgin album for review.
It MUST be an album on this site with no reviews at the time it is shared with the other person.

Step 2: You are required to provide to the other person a link to the album you want him/her to review.
It MUST be available for FREE online and in either a QUALITY DOWNLOAD or QUALITY STREAM. No self-promoting your own albums, thanks!

Step 3: You will review the virgin album you received from the other person for the challenge.
Be prepared for the possibility that it may be well outside your comfort zone. Please remember this is done in good faith!

If you have any problems with the person you're matched with, let me know. I have spare albums for review just in case it doesn't work out.

Signed up for Secret Satan (Open until Nov 26):

Definitely going to be participating this go around, though I'm not sure how much I'll get to this time, I was expecting the date to be a little deeper into December. I'll be opting not to do the Secret Satan, can't be certain that I'll be able to follow through on it given the way my schedule will probably shake out. Best of luck to everyone, hoping to crack that 609 cumulative score before I croak. lol

Aaah, so not ready for this to be announced! But yes, I'll do Secret Satan.

Mr Thumb, are you counting or competing this time?

Both, but don't count on me providing any sort of real competition.

Oh, cool! I might have 2/5 workdays then, instead of 5 per week. If so, I should be able to invoke some scribblings.

Can't wait! Hope to contribute more than last time, and to arrive with clearer ideas.

And why not, wanna finally try Secret Satan for once, so count me in! Good luck to everyone, especially to whoever will be matched with me

Can anyone post an announcement on the regular MA site? I almost missed this challenge because it was hidden in the forums, and I think many will since it's quite early this year

I only got one review in during the last challenge, I'd like to try and get more around this time. Winter might be a better opportunity to sit down and review stuff.

Hoping I can participate in this, that week is either going to be hellishly busy or completely dead depending on how my schedule turns out. No Secret Satan for now.

I'm always keen to take part in these things, however I'm not the greatest writer. However I'll see how I go. It's been a long time since I've written a review but there's a few virgins on here I wouldn't mind writing about.

Will we get the Secret Satan match-ups soon? Looks like not many doing that unfortunately.

I'll match up most people today, was hoping for another participant so we could have an even number. I'd do it myself but I'm struggling to think of an album.

Edit - I'll just jump in myself think I've found something

Managed to polish off a couple within the first hour, gonna crash and get back to it tomorrow when I've got some free time. I'm mostly going to be catching up on promos that I've been meaning to hit for Sonic Perspectives and The Metal Observer that I didn't get around to earlier, mixed in with some stuff that will be coming out on December 3rd. Good luck everyone, let's see if we can set a new cumulative record, we've got to beat that 609 number at some point.

It's sort of a tradition going back to 2007, I always binge listen a bunch of stuff the Saturday and Sunday before the challenge starts, so I usually get inspired to churn something out right as soon as the announcer yells go!

Edit: lol Someone got in a review for Rhapsody Of Fire's latest album about 10 minutes before I was able to submit mine, normally I'd stick to more obscure stuff to avoid duplicate reviews like this, but it was on my promo list for SP.

Just submitted my first review for the review challenge. I'm likely not gonna get a lot of reviews out this time due to school, but I do hope to bring in some attention to albums that deserve it.

I've written a couple of reviews myself, too. It's been a couple of years. I have a few more I'd like to write about but we'll see if that happens.

Yeah, same. Wrote my first review since mid-2018 for this challenge. Or rather, finished off and touched up a half-done review I was working on before I kinda abruptly stopped.

I'd love to get back on it in the coming weeks, but we'll see how it goes.

Welp, I got one in. I'm going to try and do more Archagathus releases as I'm very familiar with them, and since they were just added to MA a few months ago, they barely have any reviews. Out of all the ones they already have, there's one only that isn't mine haha.

I'm going to lose most of Sunday to family-related stuff, so if I were a betting man I'd put my money down on Gas for this one, though it may be a tad closer than the last few challenges.

I don't know how many more I'll write, if any, but two reviews is still something. One of them is actually my longest ever (and possibly my best, imo), so that's quite the achievement.

I dunno man, I’m floundering. I have lots of good stuff to write about, but the last two weeks have been insanely busy and I haven’t really recovered. I’ve caught up on most of my work stuff now, but I’ve literally written one review sentence by sentence at about 10 different times, and that’s not the way to get in the mood for writing better. Maybe the week will improve, not sure.

Are we supposed to get from your comments that there's hope for everyone, then?

*shifty eyes*

(just kidding, hope you both get in the ideal conditions for the challenge. If I can sneak a higher placement this time, though, I won't complain :-P )

lol There's always room for a dark horse to win, place or show here, it's happened several times before. I usually hit a lull after my first day and I usually do most of my prolific output towards the end of the challenge, so losing this Sunday will probably drag my total down a fair bit. But to give you a ballpark number, usually a weak showing for me is somewhere between 25 and 35 reviews, and I'd guess based on my existing output that I'll likely finish slightly above that range, barring something unforeseen happening of course.

Regardless of what happens, I think the total cumulative score is the biggest prize, mostly because with a solid amount of participation from a few dozen users we could break the old record of 609, whereas I doubt I'll ever be able to get close to the current individual record, even if I reviewed nothing but EPs and 3-4 song demos. I just don't have enough time in a given week to pull that off.

Please for the love of god someone beat my record. I don't actually want to be known as the guy who got the most ridiculous about writing the most reviews in a week forever :-P

 You may just have to hope that the other Gas (aka the other guy who broke Diamhea's record) gets a sudden burst of inspiration. I'll be impressed if I manage to turn in half of what your current record is.

I hope there's hope for you, because this is like a cursed week for me or something. I almost hit by cars/bikes 3 times today within a 10 minute space. Whichever deity you are praying to, can you ask them to use a different method please?

Would the real Gas please stand up?

Next thing you know, RapeTheDead dumps a whole bunch of reviews at once to clinch the win.

Hahaha I remember that happening, classic realization moment.

Um, that 'almost' means they should use a more effective method, rather!

More realistically (though, last time I checked, black magic wasn't against the rules...) eliminating every user likely to finish above me would result in the decimation of M-A active users, so I guess I'll have to think of an easier way lol.

lol This is why I shouldn't post comments on the fly after barely getting any shut eye the prior night, accidentally put an unnecessary "other" before the parenthesis section. I need more sleep!
