Oh for fuck's sake, stop making me feel guilty unless you write something yourself, dude...

I have two reviews I'll submit either tonight or tomorrow, then that's it for me. I wanted to tackle the new Tribulation album, but it feels too 'big' to grasp on just a few listens, so it'll have to wait. Otherwise, I'll finish with ten. Not too shabby.

I may have a few more left in me, though I'm beginning to feel a bit burned out, not so much from review writing, but rather because of all the other work that just suddenly came up a day into my week and has been giving me only a couple hours in the evening to actually write. I think I may be able to slightly edge out my performance last challenge, but I feel like I worked about twice as hard to do 2 or 3 more than the last challenge.

I usually don't get much done on the weekends. I'm hope to finish up two tomorrow, but I'll be happy with just one, so I can say I wrote at least one every day this time.

No time to write more. I was out of releases I could review properly anyway.

I might try to squeeze one last one in before the bell. Naturally, I wrote way more during this challenge than I thought I would going into it. Oh well, more virgins deflowered!

I missed out on writing a review yesterday, but at least I got the rest of the days. I'm excited to see what the grand total and tally is.

Nice work everyone.

i hope the next challenge has a bit more of a warning. I thought we were going to do only 1 a year but still a decent turnout.
After all the stuff i reviewed the last time i need to build my mental list of virgins i want to do for this. Some of the stuff i reviewed for the last challenge was on my to do list for years.

Hey, technically I participated every Korean day! One M-A just happened to fall during 24 hours that contained nothing but work, drinking, then sleeping. I really didn't mean to write so many reviews but once I made that list of virgins I knew I had, I just couldn't NOT review them, you know? I wish I'd had more crap stuff to review, though, as this time there was only one thing I gave below a 50%. A couple real good releases, a fair number of decent ones. Not too exciting but I still had fun.

Damn, woulda liked to write juuust one more so I could get one in every day, but life sorta got in the way at the end of the week. At least I averaged more than one a day and wrote literally every opportunity I could until Saturday rolled around (I was writing paragraphs on the can at work). Hit double digits, tied for 5th place and gave myself a benchmark to eclipse in the next challenge though, so I'm satisfied with my results.

As for the overall collective result, well, it's obviously lower than it has been in previous years, but that's probably because Ozzy and Perplexed don't write around these here parts anymore. :P Still a pretty solid turnout, all things considered.

I ended up doing better than I thought I would, the night before I was convinced that I had nothing left and then I managed to pull off 5 more yesterday afternoon. I think what helped me this time was actually doing a little every day, rather than just trying to cram a bunch in on Saturday and Sunday which usually kills the quality as my brain starts shutting down.

I think the next time we do one we should probably give a little bit more notice to insure wider participation, as our collective numbers, while good, were a bit low compared to previous challenges.

In a bazillion-way tie for 5th place and I participated every day? This may be my life's greatest accomplishment.

The lack of notice was on request. Next time I'll give more notice, yeah.

... to get you folks prepared for it, the next one will be in November.

 I was actually waiting for you to pull off another cluster of 10 or 20 demo reviews on Sunday just to solidify your lead, I didn't think I was actually going to snag another 1st place win after trying to be a bit more low key about these challenges.

And I'm definitely down for doing another one in November. Even if we're not pulling off 500-600 collective reviews between us, it definitely gives the site a nice bump in activity and will probably lead to more reviews getting read.

Participating was simply way too complicated for me this time, thus only one review. I'm a bit ashamed of myself, but it couldn't be helped. The company I work for announced our new project I've already worked on for four years on Monday, the girlfriend's dad is on his deathbed, and I'm extremely busy virtually all the time these days... I hope things will improve by November.

Congrats to every reviewer, anyway.

The challenges this time around seem to be of a higher quality rather than the 500 review mammoths of yore. It's better this way, I think. Unless you enjoyed reading 40 OzzyApu reviews for singles he'd heard on youtube.

@Zodi's long post, that's actually kinda cool. I wondered how you were finding all this random stuff. Makes sense now and sounds fun. I was hoping to see a nice review for the new Taran and Djevel albums. The 2 best things in extreme black metal this year. :nods:

I was thinking more along the line of getting more reviews by having more people participating and giving people notice so they could figure out their schedule for the week in question. I didn't mind the short notice personally and I definitely support keeping singles capped at 5, I was more thinking of a few others that didn't participate or only did 1 or 2 because of the short notice before the challenge happening.

Anyway, as stated before, I'm cool with doing another one in November. These challenges are actually a good motivation for me to knock out the promos I get from The Metal Observer in a timely fashion, which I was getting a bit lax on over the past year.

Question for all you fine folks, is there anything you'd want changed with the way the challenge is managed? with the rules for the challenge? Now is a good time as any to have a discussion about that, so any changes could be applied for November.

I'm voting for keeping the rules exactly as they are, including the 5 review cap on singles. I think we've got a good system going here, and with the added notice for the next challenge we may be able to attract some new blood.

I agree, things work just fine now, but yeah a bit more notice would be nice so I can get some pre-listening done and percolate my thoughts for a bit. This time around was a bit to rushed for me.

Bare with this next thought:
Something I think could be fun and a cool dynamic to the challenge is a pool of random assigned bands. I know a lot of people either get promos or will hit up the random band function to try and find something but a lot of people probably also won't. I never do. So to add a bit of fun to the challenge maybe those who want to could opt to join a pool and all get assigned a random virgin. Obviously the band/album in question would have to be available on youtube, bandcamp, etc. but I think it could be fun and would bring people out of their comfort zones and maybe bring some interesting opinions that otherwise wouldn't be brought to life. Anyways just an idea.

I had an idea sort of along the lines of Erosion of Humanity's suggestion, but it was more just that we should compile a list of bands to review. Maybe a week or so before the challenge, get people to send in a list of virgins they want reviewed, and then the day the challenge starts just compile everyone's submissions into a giant list and post it on a thread. Since two people can review the same virgin album and it counts for both, I don't see why it'd be a major issue and it would help a lot of people get started with some cool shit suggested by other people if they didn't know where to start and what to review.

In pretty much all other respects, I'm fine with sticking to the rules that have already been established, tradition is tradition, but this "virgin hit list" would be a good way to give people a good place to start and might help get even more reviews in with respectable quality. Just a thought, obviously there may be downsides to this I haven't thought of.

I do like Erosion's idea. We could keep things as they are since it works fine and everyone already like the rules but add a little twist to it. Some reviewing buddies of mine like BH, RapeTheDead did a review exchange. I picked an album for BH to review and he picked one for me (we both picked something out of the comfort zone, doom metal for him, tech death for me) and it worked fine. We could do something like this for the next challenge, the regulars who are sure to participate could be paired with someone else and do the same I did with Bastard (still needs to be a virgin album, of course). I'd be willing to take care of it if I'm not too busy but I like the idea and it could add a little fresh bonus to the activity. People should pick something that they personally like and keep things serious though, don't pick an awful raw noise black metal that you hate to troll your companion!

Anyone in?

Something like Virgin Secret Santa? We could integrate that. The timing would be perfect for next challenge.

Yeah that's awesome. I really like that way of doing it. :nods: Just everyone needs to make sure that the album they pick is readily available online. No 20 year old demo bands!

Next one will probably be around Christmas time or first week of January.

Damn, just found out about this. I really enjoyed the previous challenge (which was also my first one) and I was really looking forward to participating in another one. Shame I wasn't home by the time this was held. Won't miss it twice, though, so I'll be waiting for the next one :-D

I'm also waiting for a new challenge. I haven't written a lot of reviews for quite some time now and another challenge would be a perfect occasion to catch up with some interesting material I have listened to since last summer. Somebody here mentioned November as potential time for another challenge. Is this still happening?

What would y'all think of doing this right at the end of the year (28 Dec - 3 Jan)? Good chance that more people would have more free time, to write more reviews.

Really? Who has any time to do anything but eat and drink too much at family dinners and winter ale fests in the time between Christmas and New Years? I'm hoping to contribute to the next review challenge more than I have in the past, but I don't think that would be a good date for most people.
