So Perplexed_Sjel's reviews from the time weren't too great, huh?

Not sure since I wasn't around much during that time. I believe he is exempt from a lot of criticism as he is part of that veteran user circlejerk, but I could be wrong... Not terribly familiar with his reviews since our tastes don't often overlap; all I know is that he totally missed the point of Skyfire's music.

Who are the vets here? I need to know so I don't break a societal norm or something.

And as for the singles, I will try to go into a bit more detail, but given the nature of the music (and the fact that they are all kind of similar), that will be tricky. Hey, I can test my limits as a writer!

Don't worry about that.

Just remember that I won't be any more lax working the queue during that week.

Nah, I always assume review queue mods to be fucking hardasses when it comes to moderating it, hence preventing complacency on my part (well, by my standards.)

Perplexed_Sjel was one of the reviewers that I originally liked, and his reviews did turn me on to a lot of cool black metal. However, in hindsight, his reviews were perhaps a bit dry and overlong. Still not bad, by any means.

Dry and overlong... heh, I can't imagine which reviewer that possibly reminds me of... heh heh, heh... ugh. (And no, that isn't a jab at the dude I am about to jab.)

Nah seriously, I used to take M_T90 seriously as a reviewer, back when I had no standards for reviewing. Granted, he kinda managed to distinguish between 'fluffy' thrash and real thrash, and pointed me towards the classics of thrash during my metalhead formation (along with many, much better reviewers) but stuff like his Spreading the Disease review really made me realise how pretentious his shit is.

/ontopic

I want to get my current review count to 60 before I press on with the challenge. It feels nice to essentially have a clean slate to work upon.

That's cute coming from an UltraBoris wannabe (who brags about having an average of 901 words per review on his profile, no less).

I never saw N_S's profile before, weird that he lists a bunch of reviewers he's influenced by and then like, five more that he's not talented enough to be influenced by. So everyone else he listed before isn't as talented? Very bizarre way to word that. "I'm influenced by these guys but they aren't the best writers on the site, just thought I'd point that out."

Oh my, where did all this come from? I was having a go at my own reviews, like I generally do.

'Insolent brat' is a new one, most of the time it is 'you dickhead!'. And yes, UltraBoris is a reviewer whose work I like very much, hence the wannabe remark is very close to home.
And the list thing was a comment on my own talent - ie: 'I lack the writing talent to draw cues from OSS, because his work is too good'. That wasn't meant to be a jab at all the other writers I listed, I acknowledge that everyone on that list (and many others besides) are better than myself at this.

So uh yeah, heh. All of this is pretty much my queue for me to log off for today. It is nice to have insults hurled in my general direction, with being 'shut down' on the whole on the side. Kinda sounds like real life.

EDIT: And no, I am not being all crybaby with that last statement. Continue hazing the noob. ^_^

First time I have noticed hazing 'round here, unless you count the absolute destruction in the review discussion thread as 'hazing'.

Ah, kind of looked like you were taking a shot at me so I thought it would be funny to throw a jab back. Probably just sensitive because my reviews are too dry and overlong, haha. That said, hazing new reviewers sounds like it could be a great new tradition!

We already do that. Then the new reviewers come to the forum, notice that everybody complains about their writing, throw a temper tantrum and either vandalize the database or just remain willfully ignorant of the forums forever.

I will be honest, I hadn't read your reviews until today with your newest. Hardly dry or overlong, to be honest, quite gripping in fact.

Hey, if you need a new insult for my work, take a leaf from drone's book and say I am like a 'verbose OSheaman'.

I'm not trying to be funny at all, I never was, I just look around me at the world and think 'damn, that's better than what I could do'. Not a healthy mindset, but one I am fully stuck in, it would seem.

No big deal, I just thought it was a really odd backhanded comment in a way. I didn't figure you'd actually meant it that way though.

I don't know how many I'll have for the challenge. Got a few obscure PM albums I can knock out for sure.

Well, as you can tell based on Erosion's comment, that is a perspective I frequently take. An extremely grating one, at that.

Uh, I feel depressed, lets get back on topic.

I do hope I don't get a fucking stinker for Secret Satan - like a single or a odds and ends EP, something where a lack of substance and track by track can't be avoided.

EDIT: Fuck it. About time I grew a fucking pair and moved on. No, my reviews don't suck, I don't suck... but they are still too long though.

Also, when Diamhea said "stragglers" earlier in this thread, he was referring to reviews that he has started but not finished, no?

No, that wouldn't be fair as per the rules of the challenge.

I mean, stuff that I have bookmarked and for whatever reason never got around to reviewing. Just got a few.

I have most of the people who have already submitted matched up. I'm planning to send out PMs with your matches by this Friday at the latest. Individuals will still be permitted to join Secret Satan up until the day of the review challenge, however.

I havent written any reviews in years (probably during another virgin challenge) and I should have the time so i'll contribute to this. Definitely gotta lot of unreviewed stuff in mind that I don't expect others are fighting over. Secret Satan sounds like fun too, I deff wanna get in on that.

Pffft. Half tempted to burn one out for this just so we don't get like 17 reviews for it during the challenge. They band is well know enough, especially around the board here, that it will get a decent enough number of reviews just by it being what it is.

I think the challenge when Ozzy and Hells shattered a million records by reviewing every single on the planet was also the same challenge when the new Amon Amarth album came out during the week of the challenge. Great timing on that one.

Starting to get close. I've been listening to a ton of stuff, trying to get ready, drawing up rough outlines in my head and whatnot. My list is hovering right around 40-50 albums of virgins. I hope I can get to all of them, but I'll be happy if I get half.

The first round of matches for Secret Satan have gone out.

I'll do a second round shortly (for those who've applied but are not yet matched up).

In the meantime, those who haven't joined yet - you still have the chance to do so. Just send me a PM if you're interested. Please give me three genre preferences, too.

I'll probably try to write a review or two. But I always take so long to write them (only have written two so far, so maybe that's why), so I hope I can chuck out at least two :)

Yes, go for it. We need more newcomers pitching in if we are to beat last year's record.

Should be mention the Secret Satan release in the title somehow?

Not sure whether I will really go for it, but I have twenty releases at hand that wait for a review. Last time I had to divert my attention to something more important, which meant that I could not participate more.
