Dia became a total virgin defiler this challenge. Kudos

Becuase of school-related stuff, school itself and the lack of a normal computer I think that this challenge may be my worst yet. But I got to review some albums I planned on reviewing this challenge, which is really great.

I might get to this if I can but I don't think I'd be able to do the Secret Satan challenge.

Might be beating a dead horse but I know there were a couple people who had mentioned possibly being able to review Spirit Division's first album.

I'm digging Crossover's reviews, good job! He's reviewing interesting stuff too.

Tomcat did a decent job with Wormrot's Voices. Surprising that it was still a virgin though!

Keep 'em coming, guys.

Whoops, I totally missed the start date of the challenge thinking it started a week later somehow, submitting a warm up non-virgin review during actual challenge week. I was hoping to write a review each day again. :durr:

If anyone's looking for a great virgin album to tackle, I'd recommend checking out Witchery (Sweden) - In His Infernal Majesty's Service. The band are awesome and the album's brand new, but sadly I can't get my hands on it at the moment, though I'd love to see what someone else thinks.

Man, I was hoping to at least crack the top 5 this time around, but there's at least half a dozen writers who're just going at an insane pace I can't even keep up with :( at least I've already eclipsed my own personal best, I suppose. How any of y'all can write like 10 reviews in a day while still keeping it substantial is beyond me, props for that.

Typically people will listen to albums for the challenge quite far in advance, so when the day comes they just tear through them. Also what they might do is write the bulk of several reviews and then finish them off on the next day - it's how TSIR got 17 reviews in one day last time.

I initially came with a list of Big B and NWOTHM albums to tackle, and on the first day, I brought a sizable challenge, but I have all but pulled out now. The realization that I didn't want to spend my first week off since August writing more hit me like a freight train, but I am glad I was able to review a few things and contribute. I should have maybe one or two in store, as well as my secret satan, but not much more than that.

Well you wrote more on day one than some of us will across the whole week ;) Yesterday I was quite productive (by my standards) because I finished my last exam and had a couple of interesting things to listen to, but today I've been lazy as fuck. Plus most of the albums I've got left on my list are a bit bland, which makes it harder to get into it. Still, maybe I'll get one review done before bed.

I'm about done. I don't have the time or temperament to do shitloads of reviews, but if I can get a few done that I've wanted to say stuff about, then I feel I've done good enough. It's pretty exhausting to do too many though. Last year I wore myself out on metal because of this challenge and ended up getting into shitloads of great new non-metal stuff in the ensuing months.

I found myself in a similar situation in that one review challenge I ended up writing 51 reviews (I know some people have done a hell of a lot more, but it was a lot for me). During the last few days when I got really into it I was writing around 12 reviews a day and it was pretty draining. Writing that many reviews in such a short time period, it made me realize how much I tended to write the same phrases and use the same descriptive words (something I'm picking up on this time to a lesser degree). Anyway it completely burned me out, not only on reviewing but also listening to metal. A break from a music genre was never more needed for me.

What you say is a very true thing, I keep trying to think of new connectives and descriptions because it feels horrible to keep writing the same formulaic review again and again. However, especially when the material isn't that inspiring, that's practically the only way to get through it. I have to keep switching between different types of metal (ambient stuff has been especially useful) and maybe a break is coming.

Sadly, I have very busy work days on Saturday and Sunday, hence my disappointing total (of nothing) for today. But stick in there whoever is still going!

If I've counted correctly then Dia needs to write "only" 14 reviews today (of which he's already done two) to be the first ever to reach triple figures - that would be seriously impressive, and given the totals for some other days during the challenge it isn't entirely unreasonable to think he'll do it. I'm rooting for you, man!

Yeah, I never did anywhere close to 51 reviews myself. That's a crazy amount. But yeah, it was good to take a break from metal and I feel like you can appreciate truly great metal if you get to know how songwriting is done well in other genres. You start to see the patterns between them and the common things that make music in general great.

I never understood people who only listen to metal (and then there's a lot of people who listen only to metal except for a handful of metal approved™ bands). There's so much cool shit to discover over so many genres. Like when I got a bit burnt out off of metal earlier this year, I got my dad to rec me some jazz from the 50s/60s and now I've discovered some great stuff I'll be listening to for years to come. Even if you just want to listen to distorted riffs and angry vocals, there's lots of cool punk stuff to explore.

personally i care more about the quality of the bands somebody listens to than their open mindedness. If being open minded just leads to being able to appreciate both children of bodom AND coldplay then you can fuck right off.

Well yeah, but I think this goes without saying. There's a lot of quality shit across the spectrum, and in my opinion, a good 85% of metal isn't worth listening to at all. Some people talk of it as an inherently superior and more intellectual genre, and I find that so cringeworthy. The band matters a lot more to me than the genre. There's going to be a lot of shit bands in every genre, it's just the way it is.

Yeah I don't know anyone who's going 'I absolutely love it when people are so open minded enough to like every shitty band regardless of genre.' Obviously quality matters. I just thought it was interesting to virtually quit listening to most metal for the first half of this year and explore other genres, and see even more how quality songwriting ties things together no matter the genre.

Was really pleased with my activity during this challenge, despite having work everyday and attend office xmas parties and social life stuff. It was my personal goal to participate everyday, but I guess my Dim Mak review was submitted too late and was accepted the morning after, so now there's that gap in my record. But hey it was a friday night, can't really blame anyone there.

Will hopefully fart out one or two more today, and keep submitting stuff beyond the challenge.

This is definitely going to be interesting. I have to say that I was particularly impressed by Crossover's contributions to this challenge, as well as Diamhea's, whom actually inspired me to review a couple albums that I hadn't listened to prior to this week and review based on his output. I may try to step up my game on a future challenge to see if I can crack triple digits, I got close one time back in 2009, though it was with a heavy reliance on reviewing singles, which is something that I've generally been avoiding doing much of since. It'll definitely be a new record since I think the previous one was 97 reviews, and was again, largely a product of mass-reviewing singles, which I don't think Diamhea did any based on what I read of his this challenge.

Jesus that's a ridiculous reviewing pace, that's like one review every hour and a half for the entire week. Very well done Diamhea.

Yeah, Dia jokes a lot about how he's not as respected as the flashier reviewers here but trust me when I say he really is, and his utterly insane dedication to the site coupled with this inhuman reviewing pace this last week really should cement his legacy here.

It's insane yet doable, but only if you have the entire week free of distraction and you've done the necessary listening to each album prior to the challenge in order to give yourself a basic frame from which to write the review, and a concise template tends to help a bit. The toughest part is if you lose a day and your rhythm gets all screwed up. I remember getting into a really good stride during one of the earlier challenges where I got into the mid-50s, and I probably could have gotten into the 70s or 80s that time had I not had a whole bunch of shit suddenly fall in my lap in the middle of the week, thus costing me 2 days.

His reviews were all very well constructed and there was no deficit in either the description or the readability departments. Definitely the finest display of both quality and quantity the challenge has seen yet. It would be even cooler next time if we can break the challenge's all-time cumulative score at some point in the future.

Bravo, Diamhea. Better than my half-assed splurging. As Hells said, you really need to have zero life if you want to keep that type of pace and hit high.
