Welcome to the 4th Diamhea Memorial Review Challenge!

Originally the "MA Virgin Reviews Challenge," this is a time-honored tradition among our reviewers here. Every spring and every autumn, reviewers are encouraged to spend a week writing and submitting as many quality reviews as possible, with the aim to focus on albums with no reviews so far (i.e. virgin albums). Every day, the reviews submitted and accepted are tallied, so that participants can see how they compare with one another and whether or not, altogether, we've been able to surpass previous challenges' totals.

The challenge is named in memory of our friend Diamhea, a long-time contributor to this challenge and staff member here at Metal Archives, who sadly passed away on May 21, 2018. He was the first person to have ever written 100 reviews for a single challenge!

This challenge will run from Monday Dec 2 @ 12:00AM EST to Sunday Dec 8 @ 11:59PM EST.

The magic number to beat is 609. That was set in May 2009. It's high but we can beat it.
The second magic number to beat is 332. That was the total from the last challenge!

Challenge Rules

1. The focus is on virgin albums.
The only albums that count are those that had zero reviews prior to the challenge.

2. Every release listed on the main site is valid including singles, videos, boxed sets and so on.
However, please try to refrain from mass reviewing singles and 'best of' compilations for this challenge. That's lame.

3. Eligible releases have to be virgins at the beginning of the challenge.
Multiple people can review the same virgin. There’s no bonus for getting to it first, so no need to hurry – focus on quality instead.

4. Eligible reviews must have been written during the challenge.
Pre-listening to albums and taking notes is, of course, fine, but avoid stockpiling already written reviews in advance.

5. Value quality over quantity!
Everyone is welcome to participate, but keep in mind that the mods won't be more lenient during the challenge.

6. The challenge abides by the default time of the site (Eastern Standard time or GMT-5).
Please ensure that you are posting your review(s) within the right time frame in order for them to count.

7. The total number of reviews written will be tallied once a day (under normal circumstances).
Derigin (myself) will kindly do the tallying as soon as possible. Please don't nag him (me).

8. Stay cordial and respectful with one another.
Don't hijack this thread with petty arguments or whining. Remember that the mods are watching (and waiting)...

9. The only reward is our eternal appreciation.
The only prize is knowing that there is an album that previously didn't get any love... that now has a review to call its own.

What is SECRET SATAN? The gist of it is simple. People put their names forward. I randomly match those people with one another. They send each other a virgin to review. They both review one another's respective virgins for the challenge. SECRET SATAN is opt-in and totally optional to the review challenge. You have to put your name forward, either by mentioning it in this thread OR by sending me a PM on the forum. Once I have collected enough names, I'll notify people who their matches are at least a few days before the challenge starts. I'll notify through a forum PM.

Once matched, you must do the following:

Step 1: You will exchange with one another a virgin album for review.
It MUST be an album on this site with no reviews at the time it is shared with the other person.

Step 2: You are required to provide to the other person a link to the album you want him/her to review.
It MUST be available for FREE online and in either a QUALITY DOWNLOAD or QUALITY STREAM. No self-promoting your own albums, thanks!

Step 3: You will review the virgin album you received from the other person for the challenge.
Be prepared for the possibility that it may be well outside your comfort zone. Please remember this is done in good faith!

If you have any problems with the person you're matched with, let me know. I have spare albums for review just in case it doesn't work out.

Count me in for Secret Satan.

Hoping to make a real dent in this challenge. I dropped the ball on the last one and I try to pitch at least one per challenge, so I gotta make this one count.

I wasn't expecting this until later in December but I'll try my hand at it, gives me some extra time to sort things out before album list season. Hopefully I don't have any bullshit get in the way this time around.

Hesitant to submit myself to the Secret Satan since I couldn't get to it last time but I'll let you know if I change my mind.

I'll be participating, and I'll be abstaining from Secret Satan again per usual, I just have had a really odd schedule the past 8 years and can't really guarantee that anything sent to me would get reviewed. Good luck everybody.

Just a reminder. I'll be letting folks participating in the Secret Satan know their matches a week ahead of time, on November 25th.

For those still interested in participating in the Secret Satan, you have ONE WEEK LEFT from this day to let me know if you want to join!

Just 10 people doing Secret Satan? Was it always like this? If possible, maybe put the notice on the homepage a little bit early, because there are some people who never visit the review forum.

Well, I'm reviewing a discography, so I don't know if I'll be able to stick to the "virgin records" rule as well - but I would certainly like to review what I can to honor the occasion. So... yeah, I'm for this, all the way.

Reckon I'll try to go hard on this one. This is really the ideal time for me to go all in with a challenge. I'm currently unemployed and my only commitment this week is one interview at a law firm. If that doesn't pan out, I'm starting a temp job for Decemeber that starts right after the challenge ends, so the timing works perfectly.

Yeah, my username was dystopia4 up until very recently (if that sounds like a teenager's hotmail account, it's because it was - glad to finally be done with the handle). And yeah, should be good. The race is half the fun.

I'm probably not gonna have very much time for the challenge this week. Playing catchup at the day job after taking Thanksgiving week off and I need to finalize my top album picks for the year though. I'll see what I can get done though.

 Nah, I don't mind that, I actually prefer that to my actual username. I hate that I used a fucking number in it.

On the topic of reviews, hoping to break my own record. Meaning I need to get like.... 5 haha.

I reviewed a virgin like six hours before the challenge started and there's a real chance that's all I'll get done this week. I am the maestro of chaos.

EDIT: I should clarify that I submit it six hours before the challenge, and I only did that because I deleted the sole review that album had a few days ago for being a low quality hanger-on from 12 years ago and didn't want to risk somebody noticing and accusing me of cheating, so I made sure to review it before the challenge started. Stockpiling is bad folks. Don't be that guy.

Freak Kitchen? I was so puzzled about your timing... Why not just submit it during the challenge and help get a better total? If that's going to be your only one, I don't think anyone would mind. I also saw Cat III doing the same thing, reviewing those Plasmatics albums in the build-up. I though Cat knew about these challenges.

Because even though the goal here is collective, it's very clearly become a measure of individual achievement as well, and the last thing I want is for anybody to connect two unrelated dots and have a plausible case for the staff abusing their powers to beef their numbers up, even if it's their only review (I do have a streak going where I think I've done at least one or two in every challenge for the last few years iirc). Honestly nobody would've probably ever noticed that a previous review was deleted shortly beforehand but I'm very dedicated to being a good boy.

I guess it’s not of massive significance either way, but it was an interesting review nonetheless. I’ve been eyeing up Freak Kitchen recently as something possibly very enjoyable and a bit different.

I don't think it would have mattered either. I only think it'd be a big deal if someone going for the biggest number stockpiled a bunch and then won. I certainly pre-listen and prepare for the couple reviews I actually do write for the challenge, but I don't think that's against the rules....

Nice Totenwolf review, RTD. I know you're not the biggest black/speed/motovenom fan, so I'm happy you gave it a chance. The occult vibe running through their sound is what makes them pretty unique (for that style at least).

Got off to a late start today due to some work related stuff, but I managed to polish off 6 promos from my massive backlog from Sonic Perspectives today, I might try to hit another one or two before I crash, but I feel pretty good knowing that I'm finally getting caught up on stuff that I should have written several weeks ago. Gregor Mackintosh's new project Strigoi is rock solid for anybody out there who liked Vallenfyre.

I also saw Cat III doing the same thing, reviewing those Plasmatics albums in the build-up. I though Cat knew about these challenges.

I'm aware of the challenge. I've been planning on reviewing the Plasmatics discography for some time now. Those two album reviews were basically finished months ago, I just had a to tidy them up a bit. The EP had been started around the same time, though required more work. It was too tempting to finally get them published, even though I doubt anyone would've cared (or even noticed) had I saved them a day later. Still got one in after the deadline.

Keep up the momentum, folks. Great work! \m/

I can just refer to gasmask_colostomy's Alpha Drone review now whenever anyone among friends or family complains that I refer to Mischa's whining for dog food as "meowing", I am now officially not the only one who hears it that way.

Managed a handful for today. Will hopefully do a few more throughout the week, as well as a Secret Satan pick or two. Looking like a good turnout this challenge.
