Oh yeah, almost forget about the pool list

I might do another album on that list for the last two days.

Slater, if you do the Pentagrammaton one I’ll be so happy. That’s a Malaysian musician doing melodic black metal who I wrote the lyrics for. We actually have another album coming soon under a different name. If anyone is really keen, I actually have like 5 CDs of Pentagrammaton at home, I could mail one if that’s a good incentive. The album’s on Bandcamp for current listening.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I'm especially surprised that you wrote the lyrics for it! I'll consider reviewing it for the challenge.

if you haven't shat out a Buckethead or Senmuth review to pad out your total, are you even review challenging?

Damn right, Buckethead is awesome! Also I like you coining “Bucketheadhead” as a thing: I would use it, but seems that Bucketbot is the established term :-P

Duly intrigued now, by Legacies Unchain's Satan Is Strong and Always Near (word!), as well as Entierro and long-lost 70s relic Cold, I mean, Cool Feet!

So, am wavering today between Bewitcher's latest and Blazon Rites' newest; might rely on a coin toss for that (with Buckethead's Pike 7 - The Shores of Molokai as finale tomorrow), as I'm riding the whole # 7 thing all the way (numerology goals, again). See, I just reached my 700th review, right before the 7th Diamhea review challenge, with, at the time, exactly 700 points to go to make metal freak status (urf!). Hence, one a day to total...7(07)!

(By the way, my younger nephew is 7, right now.)

Just did two more. I have another two that were on my list (which would bring my total to 12, a new record for me I think) but I'm super busy between now and tomorrow night. We'll see if I can find time to crank out two others.

This is a personal best for me as well, currently at 11. I am starting to run out of steam, not sure if I'll be able to crank out any more today but I think I'll be able to do at least one more tomorrow as well also bringing my total to 12. I don't remember exactly what my previous record was, somewhere between 7-9 I think, but I'm sure it wasn't more than 9. I am a little proud of myself I have to say, haven't been this productive review-wise for a long time!

Life got in the way this week especially, so I probably won't go beyond 5, which is still somewhat of a victory given my rate of writing, but also a pity because it's my first real participation and I had at least another dozen virgins waiting their turn. Looking forward to the next challenge :metal:

Bollocks, I've nearly missed the review challenge. I'll get a couple done tonight hopefully.

I told Thumbman he was banned from Quebec/my place and eating olives at the pub with me if he didn't beat Hells for 2nd place. Let's see.

Ouch! Maybe I should take tomorrow off, it's already a foregone conclusion that I'm not going to get anywhere near 100 reviews this time, too much stuff came up during the week.

He should be banned from eating olives anyway, such a rubbish food. Tell him he's got to get to 50 to save the oily vegetable!

It seems that a review for an EP will be the longest I'll have submitted for the challenge, it's just that good. It seems that mostly these days my reviews turn out shorter than they used to, but every now and then something brings out my username.

Your victory is now ruined with your bad taste in food!

I'll be writing some short and barebones reviews tomorrow for a volume of my Metal Bounty Hunter series that I haven't continued since 2017. It's fun stuff.

Just a short contribution to keep the flame of Roman metal alive and I'm afraid I'm done. But hey, the important is to participate.

EDIT - Just added a second one, actually.

Potato question: so any review submitted before 23:59 EST (5:59 CET apparently) counts? I like writing late at night mostly and want to make sure my pretty American hours of functioning are actually useful here

It's any review submitted and approved until that time. I'll be watching the queue at 23:59 PM EST tonight to make sure any virgins still left in it are handled before then. I'd still strongly urge getting reviews in earlier, though, but you do have until the end of the day to submit your reviews for the challenge.

Most of today is going to be shot for me, I might sneak one or two in before the buzzer tonight, but I can't in good conscience deprive Mr. Thumb of his ability to consume olives with his French Canadian brother on account of my Huguenot ancestry on my mother's side. A close 3rd is good enough. :-P

Thanks, clear - I'll probably do two shortly and the last one closer to the closing time. I had hoped to do one per day, but this week was... mostly bad and I am doing my usual thing of cramming everything in the last minute.

How do you guys even do it is beyond me, I feel overwhelmed after listening to like 8 different albums multiple times in one week, if I attempted literal dozens my head would probably explode. I find it honestly impressive.

Yeah it's wild how many some of you guys do. I barely want to review anything anymore. Even if I did, no way I'd have enough unreviewed shit to last me a week. Impressive...

Doesn't it feel good (and somewhat exhausting), though, to hit multiples of one hundred? (In your esteemed case, sir, four - for which there are four MA aspirants totalling same amount. A four-way tie, what, so your next review will have you leap frog into the top 40!)

Whelp, I'm spent for this challenge, managed to throw in 2 more before the buzzer that I was already tasked to do for Sonic Perspectives. Just a note to Derigin, the Burning Witches review I just submitted was not for the challenge (it's not a virgin), I had originally planned on writing it for the challenge but when someone else hit it a week prior I started slow writing it over the previous week and just finished it off tonight.

How do you guys even do it is beyond me, I feel overwhelmed after listening to like 8 different albums multiple times in one week, if I attempted literal dozens my head would probably explode. I find it honestly impressive.

It's difficult to really explain, it's largely a product of being so immersed in metal for the past 30 years that I can almost visualize the descriptions and reactions to each album in each style. I'm not getting the numbers that I used to get due to having a far busier schedule (my personal record is 93 reviews, which I've been trying unsuccessfully to break for about 12 years now), and my current formula for writing reviews for the webzine I work for involves me writing longer reviews than I used to write. Admittedly my approach to writing is a bit formulaic, so I'm at the point where I can cough up a 4-5 paragraph review on demand fairly quickly since I have a formula that is mostly internalized.

No worries. This has been a very successful challenge. I'll do the count and tally once I wake up in about 9 hours, but I can already say with confidence that we've surpassed 400 virgins reviewed. Excellent work, everyone. You make this review community proud.

I'm finally done, sorry for sliding in the last one almost literally last minute. I should really go to bed, it's 6 AM here. Good night.

You call that last minute? I'll show you last minute  Was editing that Orcypt one and suddenly realized it was actually 11:59, so posted very quickly and re-read it afterwards! Nice to see the Green Carnation review though, I hadn't checked to see if they had more stuff. The last album was awesome, will definitely listen to that soon.

 Yeah, it was like 5:56 and I almost blanked when trying to pick a title (which I usually do last). And glad to hear - Green Carnation is awesome and it's the only single I thought made sense reviewing as it was a standalone release.

Of course my plan was to have all these reviews done by about 3-4 AM my time (9-10 EST), but whenever I'm faced with a deadline this is precisely what always seems to happen... The Votum review took some time especially, as I had to stop myself from rambling too much about my nostalgia for 00s prog.

Ah I get it, having a format definitely helps in streamlining things - I think I'm also gradually settling into one, although that does vary a bit based on genre. But just the aspect of having listened to enough stuff relatively recently have a formed opinion is what blows my mind, admittedly my way of listening has always been "obsess over one album for way too long", but even trying to get over that, preparing for nine reviews in a week has felt like an overwhelming mindfuck and I feel I'll need a break now.

Yeah it's wild how many some of you guys do. I barely want to review anything anymore. Even if I did, no way I'd have enough unreviewed shit to last me a week. Impressive...

Well, there are still many unreviewed albums on the site, especially from bands that are recently being added. Sometimes, I'll just click on the "random band" button to search for a new band with an unreviewed album, so I can take a listen and render it a review. But most bands I've reviewed were already previously known by me... I've used to publish compilations in video for Youtube about bands with harsh vocals and other series for rock bands with female vocals. I guess they're pretty useful for situations like these, since they're practically unknown on the interweb lmao.

I think that the worst part of these challenges is the fact that, after about 3 or 4 albums reviewed, I usually run out of ideas to verbally enrich my composition and I tend to stick to the same formula that I applied before - a brief introduction about the band, the reference of similar bands, talking about the vocals, the instruments, the production and what could've been handled better. Maybe that's a beginner's issue that I might eventually overcome.

Anyway, it surely was a great challenge. This is my second challenge and I've already beat my own "record", with 9 virgin reviews. Looking forward for the next one (if I'll have the time to participate, of course).

TOTAL VIRGINS: 430

On average, 90% of all reviews from the week were virgins! This is higher than the last challenge, which was at 88%.

We were up 108 reviews and 4 participants from the last challenge.

In total, 278 (65%) virgins were full-length, 82 (19%) were EPs, 44 (10%) were demos, 7 (2%) were splits, 6 (1%) were singles or live albums, 4 were compilations, 2 were collaborations, and 1 was a video. No split videos or boxed sets were reviewed this time around. The percentage of full-length, EPs, and demos reviewed this challenge were almost exactly the same as last challenge, and that percentage was consistent for each day through the entire week.

There were a total of 337 bands reviewed, of which 164 (49%) were bands without any previous reviews (ie. virgin bands). This is the exact same percentage as last challenge.

The most reviewed virgin was Helloween's Helloween with 6 reviews!

The 7th Diamhea Memorial Review Challenge had the most virgins since December 2019, and is only the ninth challenge to exceed 400 virgin reviews. No new all-time records were broken, though we had a number of new faces who have entered this challenge's top 10. There was a notable increase in the number of people participating for 5 or more days.
