A bit strange review...

"Still Generic, but have potential - 90%
Written by Immolation

After listening to King Of All Kings, you can probably say that Hate Eternal has released yet another generic Death Metal album. Standard Death Metal riffing fills the songs, but I do like The Obscure Terror track's riffs. With a couple of cool solos, Hate Eternal shows that not every single second of every track is completely generic. I believe that their is hope for the band, and hopefully they use their potential to release a good album.

If theres one thing not generic about this album, I'd say its the sound of the drums from Derek Roddy. Sure, blastbeats are abundant, but he still makes the drumming of bands like Cannibal Corpse look bad. In Rising Legions of Black, he definetely shows impressive work on the kit. Hopefully the rest of the band will rise up to Roddy's level, have better songwriting, and release a great CD next time around."

So it's completely generic, not a good or great album, and yet he gives it a 90%? Has potential? Did he give it 90% on mostly potential? Potential doesn't really mean anything. Boring bands like Papa Roach and Linkin Park may have potential to release the next Darkness Descends or Pleasure to Kill, but it's probably not going to happen.

I love guys that give huge ratings for album that are usually considered really shitty, and vice versa, even if they sometimes happen to go overboard. Maybe it's because I have a hard on for controversy, but every time somebody complains about Tepes, I just laugh. Same deal with the newest St. Anger review. Some people can get their panties twisted up so easily nowadays.

Get off it, I would think its pretty self-explanitory. But if you must, I was just stating that IMO 100% for any piece of art (especially a review of a piece) can never be percieved 100% by a large population. Therefore it is extremely misleading to give such a percenage to the thousands of people who will read such a thing.

Also, the fact that I didnt back up a statement like that up on a msg board is "strange" and "outlandish" seems a bit over the top. To me the words "strange" and "outlandish" would be someone sitting at their computer and racking up almost 6000 posts in just over 2 years...

However I will make recognition to your point in relation to the reviewer listening to one of the best albums a reviewer has ever herd. I understan some people feel such a a need to rubber stamp somthing with a special 100% as they feel it gives them some form of credibility but I dont agree.

Even if you give a 90%, it will not be perceived as deserving of a 90% by a large population. The same is true of any given score. What's the point?

Well yeah a lot of the population wouldn't perceive most of the stuff we like to be worthy of high scores, so that's a moot point. If you don't agree, so be it, but giving a 100% to something usually just means that the particular reviewer can find little enough wrong with it (or nothing at all) to award it such.

Misleading? Maybe, but in that case, all reviews are to some extent or another. They are simply editorial-like commentaries to cater to those who happen to share the taste of the reviewer in question, and to assist people looking for a broad guideline.

The way it starts and ends makes Kishmakay's review of Evoken - Quietus one of the most disturbing reviews I've come across.

Quote:
Evoken are the type of band that sometimes you think that is so dark, evil and black that it may bring you bad luck just for listening to their albums. Curiously my mom died a few days after I listened to "Quietus" for the first time. That happened three months ago and right before the sad event I had this very feeling in mind. "Man... this is so evil.. so black that it must attract bad things". Sadly curious indeed.

Quote:
This is an ode to death. The ultimate release from life through music.
Try listening to this album right after your mother's demise. You will feel like walking beside her through the paths of the dead. Crossing the gates of this world into the next.

Just make sure that there are no windows nearby.

Reviews for Black Label Society's Kings of Damnation - Era '98-'04

Black Label Society is one of the few bands that plays real metal (as opposed to the likes of Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park), and they've put out so many great songs. But while the songs on here are good, they missed some of BLS's greatest songs like "Stoned and Drunk" and "All for You." Of course, if you are getting into BLS, this is a decent place to start, just know that there are great songs that were left off of here as well (motivation to pick up the individual albums). The two new tracks are pretty good, but people that already own the majority of the songs on here need not pick this up just for those two songs. This is just one of those albums that comes out after a record company loses a band, and release a (usually terribly put together) greatest hits package to take as much money from the band's fans as possible.

Reviews such as this are not always let through are they?

The song has a 310 bpm blast section but live the drummer has to two hand it. Seems pretty simple to me.
