I would enjoy None So Vile so much better if they had a more enjoyable growler. I've never been a big fan of Lord Worm.. at least he is better than the new guy though.

Although the new guy is like one of the nicest people ever, he was very cool and understanding or whatever. Briefly talked to him at Summer Slauhgter.

From H_U's new Cryptopsy review.

Quote:
Naturally the fart gas emitted into the microphone by DiSalvo is well worthy of a good bashing. If you thought that what was heard on “Chaos A.D.” or “Far Beyond Driven” was hilarious, just spend a few minutes listening to “White Worms” or “Emaciate” and try not laughing your ass off at it. It’s all either the classic “blah blah blah blah blah….rooaarrr”, “grunt grunt grunt grunt grunt, sppeewww” or the occasional “grah grah grah bllaahhh” percussive nonsense that all but imitates the sound of a drum. It’s even more annoying than when jazz singers occasionally try to imitate a trumpet with that goofy “bop bop be dip dee doo” baby talk.

I loved this; he describes the vocals perfectly, and I fucking HATE scat singing in jazz, so any insulting of that is fine by me.

Here's one for the "what the christ" category:

Sjodogg - Landscapes of Disease and Decadence, by Diarrhea_Face

Now listen to this: http://www.myspace.com/sjodogg

He's certainly correct about it being terrible. But, how the hell does it sound anything like Si Monumentum?

It's probably been posted before but I'm not reading through 14 pages to see if it has. This is one of my favourite passages I've read in a review here. It comes from a review that BastardHead wrote on Eluveitie's "Slania". This guy is perhaps my favourite reviewer I've seen so far on the archives.

BastardHead wrote:

Now, imagine what this personified ideal would look like. To me, it seems like modern melodic death metal and Celtic folk metal's bastard child would look scraggly and unshaven, probably with less teeth than fingers. It would hobble when it walked and would be perpetually slouched over. The rasp of it's smoke damaged voice would be near indecipherable, and it's noxious aura of odoriferous funk would prevent anybody from getting close enough to hear it speak anyways. Now let's imagine blowing him up, say we slipped a small bomb into his half-eaten-and-found-in-the-trash burrito or something. After the chunks of dirt ridden meat finish raining down on the streets of the city, an amateur mad scientist with a scant understanding of human anatomy attempts to stitch him together. This resulting creature stands as my visual representation of Eluveitie, a patchwork entity that is coherent and recognizable, but at the same time disjointed and ugly.

Thank you very much good sir! Believe me, I take every ounce of praise like it's the only bit I've ever gotten and will ever get. Stuff like this just makes me beam. Also, being told that I'm perhaps somebody's favorite threw me for such a loop, my head's still spinning. Thanks again.

Jeez, I'm really bad at accepting praise gracefully eh? I always gush.

No problem. I haven't been here long so I haven't looked at many of the top reviewers yet. Although, I have looked at most of the (well, famous is a bit extreme but I don't know what other word to use) famous reviewers like Hells_Unicorn, UltraBoris etc. I must say I like your reviews more than theirs, no offence to the other guys who are very good. You have a great blend of humour and information. I guess your like Boris and Hells_Unicorn put together. But to be fair, your my favourite reviewer so far........ If you want to keep the position, keep putting out quality reviews. I do enjoy reading them.

Hmm, the content of that new Alestorm review by Managarm seems awfully familiar...

Hah, indeed. I guess it must be testament to something good if every negative review has to go down an almost identical angle of attack.

"What the flying fuck?" was the first thing that hit me when I read this:

The_Boss on his Marduk - Rom 5:12 review wrote:
The vocalist is a screeching bastard, having a somewhat decent mix of screeching, wailing, and croaking like Shagrath meets -insert generic name here- to make an interesting mix.

How does Mortuus sound anything like Shagrath? Even if you did mix Shagrath's utterly miserable vocals with anyone else's it still wouldn't sound like Mortuus in the least.

I loved this one.

thebleakhorizon on Pantheist's O Solitude wrote:
By its very nature, doom metal is a style of music that does not accommodate the impatient and the emotionally vacant. The fearful ones who invest so much energy attempting to evade the unpleasant realities of the human condition, running fast from the revelations of truth awakened by lonely introspection and existential contemplation will eternally find themselves perplexed in the encounter of art such as this. And so shall they eternally fail to ever develop a true appreciation of life as a whole, refusing to accept darkness and light as equally essential to the journey of existence. Pantheist expertly strikes this balance through the shining triumph reflected in the ascendancy of mountainous passages over musical landscapes of desolation. Real happiness is only realized after having made it through the suffering of despair and sorrow, as only then can the true meaning of joy come alive. The overcoming of such a struggle is something to surely be rejoiced, and this album is certainly a tremendous soundtrack to such a rapture. Embrace the journey! Acknowledge the agony! O sweet Melancholy! O glorious Sorrow! O Solitude!

Blah, a bit overblown and pompous. Doesn't really say much, just a simple concept constructed in an unnecessary poetic sounding style.

Ha, the last line reads like Samuel Taylor Coleridge! It´s well written, to my eyes even a little tongue in cheek, or at least that´s how i´d do it.

Hm... well, ok, if there're some stylistic allusions in there, it would shed a better light on the passage. Out of context, it seems pretentious and dull at the core to me though.

I quite like it, although it may have been better suited for an essay about all of doom metal and just sorrowful music in general, than a review of one specific band.

I really love THIS review by Noktorn for "World Coming Down" by Type O Negative -

www.metal-archives.com/review.php?id=3534

It reminds me of just how devastating that album is, and why I'm so painfully moved to tears when I listen to it; even if I don't agree with all of his observations about the sound and reason for their music, throughout their career.

I was going to quote this actually, I even recently got the album after reading that review, I don't like goth music, but just felt like I had to get it.

Do you like it? Its a bit of a slow burner; it has to grow on you. And its not just goth, it also has heavy slabs of doom and sludge mixed in. Its just such an amazing album, and one of my all time favorites.

Well I only got it like 2 weeks ago and listened to it a couple of times only , so as you said might take some time to grow on me , but I wasn't really expecting much anyway because of it being goth and having sludge influences ( which I don't really like). I just thought Noktorn pointed out something unique about the album, and felt curious to check it out.

Well, if you're generally a fan of doom, then I think it'll hook you over time as long as you keep giving it a chance. :)

'Everything Dies' is one of my all time favorite songs.

I swear the first time I heard Rom 5:12, which is the most recent Marduk album.. I swear I could pick off the similar type of black metal vocal approach that Shagrath uses. A very accessible yet raspy croak mixed with a harsher and darker sounding black metal vocalist could easily describe Mortuus I think on this newer album. Stop being a butthurt fan.

Whether or not you're a huge fan of Kataklysm on record, they are fun live. I saw them earlier a few years back and they slayed, thus making my decision to go again a bit higher. They were definitely the best on the bill, Vader as mighty as they are played all off the first two albums and didn't live up as they did the first time I saw them when they headlined.

I bet you like Whitechapel. Stop being a butthurt fan

Shut your traps, whelps. You especially, "SepticTomb." Your sense of humor is even worse than mine, and has gotten you into trouble before, has it not?

Warbringer has a knack for attracting douche bag reviews, it's kind of sad because they're not bad for an obvious throwback.

The title for Caspian's new Summoning review is awesomly clever and anyone that doesn't recognise the reference...well...they had more important things to do 6 years ago.

Perhaps you played the second generation of it, Muloc. Pretty sure the originals (which are still the best, btw) are 10 years old.

I was trying to go for some super cliched RPG thing but that was the best thing I could thing of :(

I would personally consider the mallcore comparison in the 1% review to be a factual mistake. Opinion is one thing, blatant nonsense another.

I've actually never listened to a single NOFX song, and only know the name of one (they did that "Please Play This Song on the Radio" song right? If so that's the one I know about). Otherwise it's kind of cool that I'm nabbing sayings from things I've never listened to. :)

Yeah, I was sort of half-joking, as I figured you hadn't heard it. It's actually pretty funny, describing bands they deem to be mediocore. Good review though.

The guy who just reviewed Deep Purple's Stormbringer really got the wrong end of the stick. In no way is Stormbringer a metal album, it's funky rock really. Not a bad review though.
