Thanks.

It is a very difficult album to really get into, and one of the hardest to review I've done so far, so if you can say you agree, I'm satisfied with the review. A damn good album, in any case. I assume you have it, too?

I think I should write more. Just reading other people's works will otherwise turn into a numbing routine soon.

Yeah, I own it. It's one of those albums where the majority of the reviews (elsewhere) say that it's awesome,. but none of them can seem to explain why and what it is the makes the album and band so unique.

Pft. "Justice" on this album has yet to be done.

I like this one:

It goes above the average review here, and it's different, for the lack of a better word.

Sometimes a short bashing will do the trick, or at least make someone happy. This one is a perfect example:

http://www.metal-archives.com/review.php?id=60633#7397

Short, blunt, and funny. I thoroughly enjoyed the paragraph in the middle. I mean, who can resist a paragraph that starts with "Imagine, if you will, a mystical and enchanted vacuum cleaner?"

Oh, cool!

I popped in this thread to mention NausikaDalazBlindaz's reviews as a general body of works, and I find myself being recommended by Gutterscream! Those two were just quick'n'dirty cheap shots during yesterday's MA downtime, although I had the Gaia one roughly planned already last week.

Thanks for the mention!

That is a very good review/essay/rant. This Peregrin guy is dangerously smart, he must be either recruited, silenced, or his memory will have to be erased. Otherwise the Order of the Walrus is not safe.

Indeed, but personally I'd prefer just recruiting him, because when dead or with a defunct memory, he wouldn't be able to write reviews like the one for the Slough Feg album again. ;)

Just finished Peregrin's Mysto Dysto review - good job. That's not the easiest band to get a handle on, and that guy is one of the more interesting vocalists trudging around the unknown 80s.

And while I'm here, corviderrant's two for The Exploited are nifty as well.

Muloc7253 wrote on Chaos AD. It's not anything like an exceptional dissection as a pure album review, but I really like the gentle criticism on the "establishment" he provides:

I'm glad to see that Muloc took what I said to heart and drafted a new review with more insight than the original one, and on top of that it managed to find its way into this thread.

Gutterscream is now officially a part of the "establishment"... The system stinks... Fight da powah... :P

I did wonder who had rejected Muloc's original piece; I haven't seen it. The result is interesting, but maybe more as an essay than a review. I occasionally like the layman's view on things that have been over-analyzed, being mostly a simple down-to-earth person myself.

Also interesting is that I've never considered Chaos AD a significant piece of work in any sense, I think it's just a boring mid-career album that's gathering dust on my CD shelf. I actually like Roots much more. Maybe I haven't been hip and trendy enough to read the reviews on it before. I'll have to remedy that.

The original review is near enough the same as the second to last paragraph of the new review.

And yeah, thanks Gutterscream, tis appreciated. It's too bad other reviewers don't take criticism so well and get all bitchy about it, rather than using it to improve a review.

That's what I was getting at really. It's only significant now because so many people love to elaborate on how 'crappy and sell-out' it is, or how 'unique and daring' it is, and how most people (particular the newer metal fans) feel the need to take this into major concideration when listening to this album, and feel they HAVE to join one of those two sides, as apposed to saying 'it just a decent album'

On a seperate note, does anybody else go directly to Droneriot's reviews whenever a new one turns up? I haven't been let down yet, they always seem to be really interesting read with some very clever points (even if the guy could make a bit more use of paragraphs...)

Does anyone know if Cheeses_Priced still actively reviews for this page?

I was going to post this earlier, but I'd like to give thanks to Droneriot for stepping up and giving a much needed negative review for "Cold Lake".

Its odd how one of the most reviled albums in metal history lacked negative reviews for so long. I was tempted on requesting a negative review for that album, but now I don't have to. :) (and I don't think I could've brought myself to torturing myself listening to that album to give it a review)

Cheese_Priced's Abyssic Hate review is really good, I especially like this part...

Burzum-influenced bands tend to resemble one another more than their inspirator, if anything. Being famously simple music (on the face of it), one might think it would be easy enough to copy, but it there's an ineffable component - Varg Vikernes' talent for unusual, eloquent melodies and flowing compositions - that's always missing from imitators. Even the better ones, like Abyssic Hate here.

In Jurassic Park, the dinosaur DNA collected by the scientists had gaps in it, which they were forced to fill in with frog DNA. When "suicidal black metal" bands clone Burzum, the gaps are usually filled in with old Katatonia. Katatonia's death/doom albums, while not being my favorite examples of the style, are not without merit. Still, they were tuned into a very different emotional frequency than Burzum, and behind the guitar distortion and growling they were almost a closet rock band, at times.

Too bad he's a closet anus-ite.

Yeah, I noticed that with the Morbid Angel reviews he just did. VERY derivative of Prozak. He should stick with his own voice.

No offense man but: pot. kettle. black. Your Blasphemy Made Flesh review totally rips off my Esoteric article in style, format and method.

Yours:

"Have you, yourself, ever felt it? You surely have at one point or another, though you might not have recognized it as such. Have you ever reveled in your misery a bit too much? Ever refused to perform kindness upon yourself or others and buried your enjoyment of such a thing? Have you ever harmed another person without feeling the guilt that your sorely hoped you would? This is music for such a circumstance"

http://metal-archives.com/review.php?id=198#29088

Mine:

"Ever felt pessimistic, fatalistic or depressed? Sure you have. Even if it was just a fleeting shadow in the noonday sun. Maybe much like the heroine of Katherine Mansfield's 'Prelude', you even quickly ‘tip-toed away’ from it. We all have such moments. Moments when you realise your dreams are shattered; you are ugly amongst beautiful; awkward amongst socialites and serious amongst inane. A moment of alienation to the method and means of a modern society. A moment when social constructs seem illusory and in epiphany you realise the insane truth of reason: that objectively, madness is a more valid choice. Or as Esoteric would say, a moment of darkness; of total epistemological despondency.

Imagine this moment expanded to a worldview.

Perhaps now we're beginning to approach the mindset of these musicians. It's a world where the summers suddenly seem a little more precious, the space next to you on the bed a little more cavernous and all the plastic laughter a little more disingenuous. Do you dare to stop and think? "

Anyone else out there shifting in their seat? I accepted the review because there's really nothing wrong with it, and I can't condemn it because the guy's style evaluation is a bit, well, off. It's his first review for the site as well. Just thought it was interesting.
