Hey everyone,

I've posted here before, but since then my group's made some progress in our musical journey. More specifically, my band released an EP a couple days back, which I was hoping you'd give a listen and some feedback to. The work is a mix of folk-tinged melodeath and atmospheric black metal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDSIez6mE6g

Timestamps are in the description. Thanks!

I just listened through it and I am a fan. My one main piece of criticism (as a bassist) is that turning the bass up a bit would make the music feel a little more full and would add some meat to the guitars (which do have a good tone and production on their own). Also vocals would add to the atmosphere. But great songwriting and playing overall!

Hey everyone, recently i released a single "Praise the Sun" under the name Astora. Its Melodic Death Metal but also slightly influenced by Harakiri For The Sky. I would like some honest critical feedback on the song, and on the actual mix, since im getting closer and closer to finishing recording the whole 2nd LP album.

Here are the links:

Hope you enjoy it, and leave feedback.
Thanks!

The mix really didn't sound bad at all, but I did hear a couple of sour notes created by a possibly out of tune guitar. One of them was specifically at 1:47. I would check your intonation and tuning, and possibly go over those parts again.

Also, kudos for using a Dark Souls theme in your material. I loved that series.

This is my first time trying to make black metal and is the first song I've created in a long time, think there's any potential here? Btw I suck at vocals so there aren't any.

The riff that starts at 1:08 is kind of irritating so the fact that it keeps coming up kind of ruins the song. Maybe its just me or try cutting it out? I do like the main riff though, the part at 3:11, and the last riff is pretty cool. It reminds me of Taake.

Thanks for the criticism! I changed things up a bit, maybe it's less irritating this time around.

Nice I enjoyed that a lot. Definitely has a lot of potential. I'd suggest adding another element and vocals to make it stand out though.

Hello all,

I just released a new EP with my project Dionysus Zagreus and am looking for some feedback on the production (and on the music in general). I've been having a hard time figuring out what subgenre to label this project as, if anyone can point me in the right direction!

it's pretty much instrumentally power metal.

very clean, i think the programmed drums could actually be pulled back further in the mix. i like what you got for tone on the guitars and bass.

i have to admit I really hate the vocals. They def need far more work. untrained, no range, offkey, and slightly off time. I get what you are going for but it just doesn't work. and as much as I hate saying it I think these work better as instrumentals.

My project Hollow Lives has just released a remixed and remastered version of a track which first appeared on our debut album. It's DSBM with a slight death and doom influence, for fans of the likes of Shining and Lifelover. Currently working on a second full length, with more of an alt rock/post-punk/goth influence. Feedback and constructive criticism welcome.

I've been working on 4 songs for a project I'm trying to start. Unfortunately I am more of a vocalist than a guitarist so the playing may be sloppy. Anyways I'm looking on feedback for what I have done before I start writing lyrics and laying down vocals. Until I can find an actual guitarist near me there won't be any solos lol. My main two influences have been death metal and nu metal (sue me)

here is what I have (shittily) recorded:

Never posted here before, but I'm looking for some criticism on music I've been working on. These recordings are all from about 6 months ago, but we've slowly been trickling them out for production slowdown reasons. I'm mostly looking for input as to whether this sound seems like something viable or if I should scrap and start over. Right now it's just myself doing guitars and bass, and writing all music, and a drummer who is also doing the vocals.

https://soundcloud.com/user-938190961

Any criticism is helpful, thanks in advance.

The music sounds perfectly competent, but I'd suggest getting some recording quality that's not phone-like.

Sadly, rhythm guitar and drums were literally recorded on a phone. I appreciate the compliment though.

Looking for feedback/ tips regarding the mix for my album, which was released last year: https://botgorelsen.bandcamp.com/album/att-kuva-det-upproriska-k-ttet-2

I did the whole thing myself without any previous experience. The drums are programmed, bass and guitar recorded via line-in. I did as much as I could by following various guides on youtube (and other sites) to get basics like compression, EQ etc. All things considered I'm pretty happy with the results, but I definitely think there's room for improvement for future releases. Seems like something's missing, but I don't know what. The bass guitar could sound better, but I don't know how to get there. Better EQ? Better plugin?

Any and all pointers are welcome.

I don't know, you are probably being a little harsh on yourself. It's black metal so I don't think the production is all that out-of-line with other releases in the genre. I assume you aren't going for a ton of polish or clarity? If I had to call out anything for next time, I'd vote for more boost on the higher-frequencies of the snare to make it pop through a little more (3k? 4k?), and maybe a little emphasis on the click of the bass drum (typically 4k, 8k). But when I hear this I feel like it's fine production-wise for the type of music. It sounds like you started to add the click on the bass drum more on the later songs, and less on the first song or two.

Most people are putting a little distortion on the bass guitar. You can add a plugin like the BOD (free), which lets you add a little distortion. Also a good compressor plugin that lets you pump and crush the bass can make it drive more. There are few out there that specialize in doing that, or a quality compressor from Waves for example, set it to slow attack to let the transient through and super quick release, with quite a bit of gain reduction so it grabs super hard and releases ultra-fast. But again, I don't necessarily hear this in the black metal stuff and I don't know if that's really going to fit well in this style.

There's good stereo separation, I can hear everything good. Parts are played well. Some cool vox parts beyond just reciting the lyrics.

Thanks for the feedback, and I appreciate the kind words regarding the vocals. I put a lot of effort into those.

You're absolutely right, I'm not going for clarity or polish. I'd like for it to sound bigger, badder, and more raw, with more crunch in the bass. I already did try to add some distortion to the bass, but I found it hard to strike a balance between the distortion and the lower frequencies. I will try the bass plugin you mentioned.

I will also explore the snare and bass drum frequencies you mentioned. Thanks!

Released a new bunch of songs that I was too sick of to work on them any longer.

https://prigioneeterna.bandcamp.com/album/watch-thee-perish

The style is rather unspecific; I'd say a mix of metal/hard rock and post-punk/hardcore, a little psychedelic and proggy at times. The singing is part normal and part screaming. There's plenty of messy solos.
Some of the songs have a more traditional/classic hard rock influence.
Honestly, I'm not sure if the genre is more hardcore punk or something like that or more metal. The overall "feel" isn't very metal. Therefore, I don't know if it could be interesting to anyone around here, but I would really appreciate if anybody felt like leaving a comment.
I'm not happy about the quality of the recording and sound, but as I said, I'm just too tired of fiddling with them.
Thanks.

I recently posted some of my, uh, improvisational acoustic black metal. I like it -- maybe the only one. But I also used to write songs, over a decade ago. I am unlikely to go back and polish these, but I am curious if anyone appreciates any of it. I'd like to get back to writing songs someday, but I am relearning music from the ground up for a while.

This track is, I don't know, I was probably into Agalloch at the time. I also did a DSBM album back then that suffered from my incompetence with percussion among other things. I remember sharing some of that here before, and had some positive reception. But I haven't been able to finish anything. Maybe because I need more practice first. I'll keep doing what I do, but I admit I'm curious if anyone else finds anything of interest in it. Either in my old (actual song) stuff, or in my more recent unhinged unstructured stuff.

Since I did this for the previous two EPs I released, I figured I would post the link to the newest one. I released it last year and I am currently working on a full-length that I will hopefully finish and release this year.

Hi everyone! I'm about to release a project I've been working on, Aleph is the name and basically it's a blend between different genres. This is the mix of 1 of the 4 songs of the upcoming EP, I hope to release this first semester.

All the feedback would help a lot, hope you like it, cheers!

That, uh... barely sounds like metal. More like ambience with distant and weak drums.

Hello!

I recently finished this work. it's definitely metal, but in an unspecified genre... altough not power, not epic, not death, not doom...

https://soundcloud.com/bosone-2/its-over

the salient facts are:
- i did almost all by myself, recording and playing
- the song was born like 15 years ago. A friend of mine provided a part of the lyrics and sung a rough idea but we never finished it
- nowadays, there is a software - SynthesizerV - which can actually sing in a very convining way
- the singer is actually a software, SynthV with a vocal bank named "Kevin"
- part of the lyrics were written by ChatGPT.

for the music nerds: I have use cakewalk, amplitube5, modo drums with drums played by jamstix

any feedback about production quality and overall result will be appreciated! :)

I have more songs in progress, using SynthV

I did the vocals on this Freezing moon mayhem cover. Id like to do Life Eternal the way Dead wouldve done it, I just need the midi file for the drums.

Brand new single "Rekt" from our brand new death metal band "Thy Idle Hands". Recorded, mixed and mastered by ourselfs. 4 song ep is coming out next month (november 2023) with slightly different mixing than what this single has.

Would really love to hear what you guys think?

Hey guys! I am looking for some feedback on this track. It's an instrumental. I wanted to achieve a really good sound, with punchy drums, "tasty" guitars. The main challenge was recording acoustic guitars (except for the drums of course XD). I wanted to make it "Opeth'ish". Anyway, it's an attempt to create an instrumental track with reminiscences of Dark Tranquility and Opeth at the same time (since I'm a big fan of them, obviously XD).

Some friends told me quality is great (maybe a down point for lo-fi raw black metal addicts), so just tell me your thoughts just about music itself, if it’s good and worths

https://aerisatur.bandcamp.com/album/the-outer-sight-ep

You can PM me here or use my adress on bandcamp

If you like it I’m halfway my second EP and it will be a way more psychedelic than this one

Hey all I recently released an ep under my bands name and i'm trying to pull in some ears to get some positive buzz going around my band but so far the response has been pretty tepid.

I tried asking around for reviews but we don't have money to pay for PR so ive just been trying to forward it through word of mouth.

https://bayrolles.bandcamp.com/album/bayrolles

If anyone wants to criticize my work please do, because I feel like a negative response is far better than the apathy this release has elicited as of late. At least then i'll learn something that I can fix other than the world being a pay to win scenario.

I tried asking around for reviews but we don't have money to pay for PR so ive just been trying to forward it through word of mouth.

If anyone wants to criticize my work please do, because I feel like a negative response is far better than the apathy this release has elicited as of late. At least then i'll learn something that I can fix other than the world being a pay to win scenario.

went in blind. honestly the 1:30 clean singing and everything probably might have turned people off if they don't know what to expect. once the death vocals and the more classic melodic death doom like katonia/novembre kicks in that is all tight.

mix is a bit on the high/treble side for my tastes but I can deal with it. if nothing else needs the bass turned up a ton.

songwriting is engaging and I'm interested overall how it develops. feels the bass is DI maybe that's why I can hear it but it has no impact.

This is all off Moonlight that you have set to play immediately when you click play. So let me check the first song.

yeah at the very least change what song is set to be the first one to play cause I was like why do you want to start out your first release like that? and then I noticed. I like how the first song started out though it's a little standard but would draw me in to listen further. honestly and it is off the vocals are so strong and I figure everything else can be fixed more. same production issues. the drums are also a little dry, like they need reverb to fill out the sound with those hits. esp on the toms.

but overall honestly good job. don't know how to help you with PR or general apathy. I in general ignore all digital only stuff. and I don't mind when people do the same to mine, I just make sure I do get them to physical form at some point.

How often do you criticize or review others’ work? Everyone wants to take but nobody wants to give.
