Hi. I'm not talking as a musician here, but I wasn't sure which subforum this should go to. I've been getting back into drawing band logos, black/death/thrash metal style, and I've exhausted all my projects. I would however like to build a portfolio I could put online before I offer my services to anyone else. So I figured I'd ask for a few fictional band names to draw logos for. They don't have to be good. I don't mean they should be bad, but I think it would be better if it was stuff that won't be taken up by a new band the day I'm done drawing the logo. Only conditions are that for starters I don't want overlong names (like Success Will Write Apocalypse Across the Sky, and such), and I won't do any "funny" joke names. If you could help me out it would be cool.

Ah, yeah, there won't be anything in it for you except a mention of your username below the logo in the portfolio.

(If the thread belongs somewhere else, mods feel free to move it. I know you would anyway, just saying it to be polite. :P)

Just do what Szpajdel does sometimes: he does logos of bands he likes or sound good enough, just for the sake of drawing. I remember he did a Gorgoroth logo that kicked ass, but the band wasn't interested.

That's not a bad idea. No copyright issues when I put them in my portfolio? I know some bands patent their names.

I guess you could put a note about name's copyright (r) and shit. You won't be using the name to represent the band, it's just an artistic expression. If the name is a simple word you won't have a problem, not even for shit like Gorgoroth (which was taken from Tolkien in the first place). The only bands you might face trouble are the ones who made up their name or are using their real names as band. The great mayority should be useful, like:

Cancer
Obituary
Emperor
Death
Arcturus
Exodus
Slayer

I just recently have been jotting down names that pop up in my head and so far my favorite are Astralgore and Ribcest. A bit over-the-top but there's definately worse ;-)

Hope this helps in some way. ( these are original band names created by ME no copyright necessary).

I think you could literally just open up a dictionary and point to random words, perhaps keeping an eye out for any that sound especially "cool". Maybe combine words, add suffixes like "ation" and so on when it would make it more fun for you or whatever.

Grab a medical dictionary. Tons of great words there.

First consider your genre(s). If your band is a black metal or death metal one, you shouldn't use names like "Pink Rose" , "My Fairy Lady", etc. After you decided genre, you need to search about similar bands, you can use name of other bands, but in other languages. For example "Burzum" means "Darkness", and it's in "Black Speech". You can use "Dunkelheit" (German), "Tariki" (Persian), etc. Also it depends on other elements like lyrical themes, origin of your band, etc.

Best word is taken before, unfortunately! (I mean "Burzum").

Yes. All Languages with ancient roots (Persian, Latin, Hindi, etc.) have lots of evil-ish words which can be used as band name. Specially black metal band!

Following on from gerandumconnor's suggestion of using Latin: I suggest using Latin phrases which sound cool to you. One of my favourites is "ex igne resurgam" (from the fire I will arise). Could work for a death/black metal band.
