So yesterday I was playing around with some Gojira riffs and this is about the 3rd time this has happened to me, but as I was playing my E string just suddenly went loose and looking closer, it looks like the string just stretched and uncoiled itself near the bridge. Is it because I palm mute too hard? Do I need thicker strings or is this common on old sets of strings?

You may need to file down the groove in the string saddle at the bridge. It could be related to age/stress on the strings, and/or palm muting/picking too hard, those would certainly contribute, but it comes down to the surface the string is contacting. I haven't broken a string there in many years.

I have seen this problem alot. It happens most on Les Paul's with heaver than .54 gauge strings but any guitar with a tune o matic bridge will have this problem. The best solution is to replace your bridge with a tone pros Tom but if filing the bridge saddle works do that first. Other than that roller bridges work well too
