Ok, so I am just doing some backing tracks for a straight forward death metal project in the works and am looking for some mix help. I know the intro is sloppy (bass is trash but I'm not a bassist) lol but I'm mostly looking for mix help.

it feels like its just not heavy enough. Basically I just recorded dry with 4 guitar passes but its just not quite there. https://soundcloud.com/mausoleum-horde/ ... hipbacking

its good enough to get the drums on it but I need to do some serious tweaks to make it ready for mastering and I'm just not very experienced.

any thoughts?

How are you recording the guitar? What mics are you using? Is it a cab or a combo amp? Are you doing 4 tracks at once or 4 separate play throughs?

Recording it using a shure 57 off the center of a orange cab with a orange th30 on it. 4 seperate play throughs but i kept it on the same position on all 4. I have a jsx head and cab i can use as well. Was thinking of doing 2 playthroughs on each amp. Thought id take the advice of some others stick to one mic to keep phasing issues out of it.

Looking to get a big guitar sound and get a real bassist to play on it. Just trying to get it sounding heavy so it could get released if there's some interest.

If youre are quad tracking you must use different tones on the same side.
Otherwise you're pretty much just bumping up the volume. Especially when played extremely tight a la Hetfield / Schaffer.

I recorded 8 tracks per side just for an experiment, and it sounded pretty much EXACTLY the same as 1 track per side, when played tightly.
Once I started to use different tones on each track, it started make sense to track more than 1 track.

You can listen to my evidence for this here in this thread I made about it on Kemper forum:
https://www.kemper-amps.com/forum/index ... y-players/

So at least make sure to have a brighter and a darker tone on both sides.
Do not just use one tone and mic position for all tracks. That's a waste of time.

@Tyrvall
Hey there, you'd be better off just dual-tracking in that case. You'd pan both of those 100% L/R and get a nice thick and fat bass guitar down the middle and your mix would sound huge. Yes, that's the secret. Big bass; not big guitars.

I'd go with dual tracking, filtering the guitars probably around 92Hz on the low end, and around 7kHz or so with a steep band for the high end to cut off those fizzy highs. After that, you need a bass guitar and drums before you can make any other decisions about guitars.

PM me or shoot me an e-mail scott(at)chernobylstudios.com and I'll help you out.
