I recorded with my girlfriend's rogue (LX200) bass for a long time. Pretty incredible for $100 new.

You can get a pretty cheap but decent Ibanez bass for less than $200. Even cheaper if you get it used. Especially the GSR's.

I've owned a few basses and while the price matters for the sound it is way more important what amp and preamp you have. For me it was also a revelation how much a pedal like the Tech 21 VT Bass did to my sound (I had an old, very "bassy", combo amp). I'd say the most important thing is that you're comfortable with the instrument. The size, the balance, string spacing, the basic tone and the build in general.

Always try the bass before you buy it! It's worth it every time.

literally anything you can pick up at the pawn shop for under 100 bucks and a distortion. Dean is a prime example. I got a XL on ebay for 70 bucks shipped. and I've used it on a ton of releases.
